As it says on the tin: Geocities to close after 15 years

So, which Geocities page will you save?
Well crap... that is some 68 links for me I'll have to figure alternatives for. Among them:

1 Series specific page
1 Shrine type page
2 active author pages
20 probably dead author pages
16 direct links to complete stories
18 direct links to probably dead stories

1 non-anime related author
7 direct links to complete lemon stories
2 direct links to probably dead lemon stories

Also... there is the following that is disturbing:

An exact date is not specified, but Yahoo is warning current users to consider moving to other options, such as Yahoo's own Web Hosting service.
I *really* hope this is not the same service that I have with my Yahoo/ATTGlobal internet ISP package... Even for free I am not considering it as a potential option for myself. I looked into it because for me it is technically free, but even at first glance the service would appear dreadful.

Here is a quote of my checking into it, from 4/7/09:

With the demise of Anifics, and with it my ability to post full favorites/bookmarks lists, I thought I would take a quick glace at what I've got to work with should I have decided to create my own with the stuff I've been learning.

Looking into it though, I cannot see why anyone would use their services, as they do just about everything to prevent someone from using most modern 3rd party development products.

- No conversion between a template created site and a self created one
- no ASP.NET support
- no PHP support
- no CGI support
- no server side Java support (they do support JAVAScript though)
- no Frontpage Extensions support (they do support old pure Frontpage code though)
- no statistics reporting
- no hit counters
- 10MB total size
- 33mb total download bandwidth a day
- 5000 hits a week maximum...

The last two are not likely to be much of an issue. But the rest... Also, I did not see anything in there on support for Stylesheets and whatnot, but I would fear for the worst.

I suppose I could hand code a pure bare bones HTML site, It would be like putting myself in chains with the amount it would be hampering my capabilities once having learned other stuff. And I'm no expert at it, though I can read and interpret and even have written simple HTML. But it would just feel like it would be assinine to be learning all this modern web technologies, and not be able to use any of it for my own personal site.

Some of the hosting sites I'm aware of I would rather not go through.

I might fire off an email to one other possible source. I've little clue on restrictions that souce might have though.

At this point, I'm merely feeling out some possibilities, no guarantees I'm going to do it. Just thinking of it as a test more than anything else.
One free web host I was looking into, but only as a possible one at this point, was Somee web hosting, they have a free package that does not sound bad. And supports a good portion of what I've listed as not supported in the Yahoo service.

I heard about this too. Honestly there's nothing I care enough about exclusively on Geocities to bother saving.

Hmmm... glancing through the list... a few caught my eye... thought I should list them for anyone interested that may not know.

Authors
- Chaos Lord's Home Page

Authors - Probably Dead
- Bob Lobster's Home Page
- Michael Fetter's Home Page
- Targhan's Home Page

Stories - Complete
- RANMA 'Almost a Miracle' by Coutuva
- RANMA 'Goodbye is Not Forever' by Coutuva
- R-SM 'Uncles' by Stacko and Drakken

Stories - Probably Dead
- EH 'Oracle - The Fifth Earthling' by Matthew Lewis
- RANMA 'Nerima Ghost Detectives R Us' by Ashuri
- RANMA 'Possibilities' by Brian-kun-Taramoor
- R-SMJ 'Strangers in a Strange Land' by Christopher J Olsen
- R-TM 'Echoes in Time' by AllWhacked
- TM 'Myths and Legends' by Krin Dreamweaver

Note1: 'Myths and Legends' was already an internet archive/wayback page.
Note2: Some of these are available on FF.NET, but some authors never put all their stories in their profiles there, only on their old home pages. I'll have to look into the whole list to see what can be redirected.

Somebody mentioned freihosting? Howsabout 110mb.com?
A massive amount of features. And somehoe it manages to be free without ads. I have now idea how they do it.

Geocities had been dying for the last ten years. The web has moved on.

No doubt about that. But the problem is, there are still some fics that can only be found there. And now is the time to save them or alert their owners so they might be able to switch and announce the new sites.

As near as could tell... 110mb does not provide ASP.NET or Frontpage Extensions support. For me, a person currently teaching himself ASP.NET... that gets a express line to the reject pile fro not being able to meet my own needs.

Somee and possibly HelioHost seem the most likely candidates for my own use of the ones checked into so far.

Somee provides native Microsoft Access Support through .NET.

HelioHost does not specifically state Microsoft Access database support, so it may or may not support them, but MySQL... That would require more checking into by me before I could use it. I know SQL much better than Access, but I've never used MySQL.

This is the first I heard about geocities closing and personally I find it very annoying. I've got a lot of links that go to there saved (quick look at bookmarks indicates 79), including some foreign language ones like Japanese. I've also got two geocities web pages I wrote (not fanfiction related), but I haven't used them in the last few years.

Well... after some searching for alternates... after the first pass I'm down to 44 individual links from the original 68, though that is not 44 sites.

Emailed about 30 authors on this issue.

So far only Allwhacked responded back, and he did not know anything of this but stated anything he had left he would likely move to FanFiction.NET. But it has only been about 2 hours, and at least a couple are clear across the world in a way different time zone.

I also have 7 of the 30 that the emails bounced back with delivery failures.

Another 3 I have no normal contact email methods for (2 have/had a service you can sign up with for indirect contact, but am not willing to do that).

There is one Xenosaga fanfiction that's there but I already got that saved.

Speaking of which, are there any NaruSaku stories that's only on Geocities? Just asking.

This.

Also, saving "The One I Love Is..."
Hmmm... I had also emailed him... but no response. Emailed one of the ones he hosts as well, also no response.

So far, of the 30 emails sent... 3 responded, 8 failed, and the rest nothing.

The issue is simple enough... most of the sites I link to on Geocities are so old the authors, even if left the sites, are no longer part of fanfiction, and even changed email addresses since last update.

Could we not save the relevant stories, that are not transfered to other sites ,and put them in an archive and keep the archive as a site resource? We should also making sure to ask the authors for permission to include their stories in the archive and in case of non responsive or dead authors to give the authors some form of clear recognition for their work. Is this idea feasible? What do you guys think?

A lot of it can be found elsewhere already... just difficult.

For example... I started with some 68 links I think it was... I've so far through two passes through them whittled it down to 34... but that is 34 links, not 34 authors.

Of the rest, several likely could be had through Internet Archive/Wayback. I've not checked that just yet.

If the pattern holds, than means more than half can just have links redirected to alternate sources.

As for archiving them... you will likely recieve a *lot* of flack on the idea. I myself am not too fond of it. I copy everything I read and even remotely like local, but I do not publicly share them on a internet site, just the links to them.

At the very least a list with stories that could not be found anywhere else and a list with alternative links for the rest of the stories so that the persons that are interested will have time to save the stories.

..

If that was directed at me, and you are asking me for the links of mine I already replaced... I'm afraid I did not keep a list of the ones I already replaced. So can't tell the alternate locations I found stuff at. I can only tell what I've got left now.

I might be able to pull that info, I can compare to my March 22nd official release list to anifics, as I still have a RAR'ed copy, as that would have been before any changes to geocities sites, but that would be more annoying and harder to put together.

I do have a list of those sites/authors of stories I emailed, and whether they responded or it was a failed delivery, though not of their email addresses. The emails were sent after the first pass was already made though.

Also... just because I have links to them... does not mean others would care about them.

Apparently, there are people who are trying to back up geocities. Which is awesome.
One thing I've been finding... Geocities seems to not be informing the affected site owners directly.

Of the emails I sent out that responded back, only 1 had responded back that he already knew... the rest, including one more today, all stated they had no idea.

I doubt that they are all lying.

There were 2 more I emailed, can't remember who though.

Sent notice to following sites warning of problem
- The Jack of All Trades Compendium (non-anime)
- Beam of the Love Senshi (FAILURE DELIVERY NOTICE)

Athor Home Pages I have on Geocities emailed authors on
- Alex Gray's Home Page (Responded back, he did not know, has a mirror site off Rakhal, at http://rakhal.com/AlexGray )
- Brian-kun-Taramoor's Home Page
- Chris Davies's Home Page
- Coutuva's Home Page
- Dark-Ranma-S's Home Page (FAILURE DELIVERY NOTICE)
- Figure Four's Home Page (FAILURE DELIVERY NOTICE)
- Florencio B de la Merced's Home Page (FAILURE DELIVERY NOTICE)
- Hiryo's Home Page (Responded back, he did not know, will tentatively plan to move, but uncertain where or when)
- Joe Fenton's Home Page (Responded back, he *did* know, will tentatively plan to move, but uncertain where or when)
- Laqjr's Home Page
- Long Ngo's Home Page
- mia-chan aka Once Upon A Dojo Fanfiction Home Page (FAILURE DELIVERY NOTICE)
- Michael Fetter's Home Page
- osmalic's Home Page
- Rakna's Home Page
- Targhan's Author Page

Story links I have on Geocities I emailed authors on
- EH 'Oracle - The Fifth Earthling' by Matthew Lewis (FAILURE DELIVERY NOTICE)
- R-DBZ 'Legendary Super Saiyajin Reborn' by Largo
- R-SM 'Uncles' by Stacko and Drakken (sent to two different emails, no response from either)
- R-SMJ 'Strangers in a Strange Land' by Christopher J Olsen
- R-TM 'A Good Day' by Bryan Neef
- R-TM 'Echoes in Time' by AllWhacked (Responded back, did not know, will tentatively plan to move whatever not already there to the FanFiction.NET account)
- RANMA 'Nerima Ghost Detectives R Us' by Ashuri (FAILURE DELIVERY NOTICE)
- RANMA 'Your Body My Mind' by Dreamspinner
- SMJ 'J vs M' by BakaMattSu aka Castle Japoness
- TM 'Green Haired Goddess' by Narcolepsy aka savagedragon14 (FAILURE DELIVERY NOTICE)

No known (by me) normal way to contact by email
- Kent Hyam's Home Page
- Teisu's Home Page
- Tom Wrensch

I also mailed one author hosted on Rakna's page, Joyce Wakabayashi, her email also gave (FAILURE DELIVERY NOTICE).

EDIT:
Note1: A couple of the completed direct story links point to the same author, thus if the author was found elsewhere, likely all the affected links would be changeable.

Note2: A few of these I *have* managed to find elsewhere, but there are issues with some of those alternates, some examples:

- 'Past Future' by Long Ngo I managed to find on FFML in single file GZ format, but it is not a complete copy.

- 'Uncles' by Stacko and Drakken I've managed to locate on FanFiction.NET, but the author had changed his name there. However, it does not have the draft chapters that the home page has, in effect, it is 1/2 the size and not the completed story in draft form that the Home Page has. Note also that 'Raven's Wing' is on that same Home Page, even if the author is listed as different. If they move the site, they would all be fine. I emailed two different emails for authors on that site, neither responded.

- 'Possibilities' by Brian-kun-Taramoor, Taramoor actually has a Personal Profile Page on FanFiction.NET. However, 'Possibilities' is not there in it.

- Hiryo maintains Profile Pages at MediaMiner.ORG and FanFiction.NET, but that does not include his hosted authors and his own link pages.

Hmmm... looking at this site link... it is confusing, as while that link and the wiki site they link to both mention them backing everything up for public consuption, I have not found anywhere how to get the corrected link or a listing of how to manually correct a existing link to go to the new URL.

Did I somehow miss it, or are they holding back until they are completely done?

So far... I'm down to 5 Geocities links I could not find either an alternate link for, or a Internet Archive/Wayback link for. And counting both what I had before, and what I added, I now have around 28 Geocities links by way of Internet Archive/Wayback. Not bad, considering I had 68 normal plus a undetermined number of archive links to start with.

Edit: Moot.

For some reason, I also keep getting pages failing due to something called "Megaclick", which auto-redirects when I try to hit the back button sometimes. I have to hit the back button about five or six times to get back one page if that happens.

Well, I know that this is known, but the date wasn't...

GeoCities is closing on October 26, 2009.

On October 26, 2009, your GeoCities site will no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your GeoCities account and files.

If you'd like to move your web site, or save the images and other files you've posted online, please act now by downloading your files or upgrading to Yahoo! Web Hosting. See details in the help center or upgrade to Web Hosting now for only $4.99 a month.
So, if you have any sites that you haven't gotten to on Geocities yet, it'll be too late after that day.
