It seems pretty clear in canon that Harry's grandparents, on both sides, are dead (unless they were mentioned in HBP, which I haven't read). Otherwise, we would have heard about them. IIRC, Petunia complained at one point how excited her parents were to have a witch in the family (were they squibs, perhaps?), so I can't see them ignoring his treament by the Durleys. Likewise, James' parents would have checked on him, even if Dumbles somehow convinced them to stay away until he got his Hogwarts letter.
Suppose one or more of his grandparents had survived. Imagine how different he would be.
For that matter, what if one or both of Vernon's parents were alive, and decided that his abuse of Harry was unacceptable?
