Immortals always pick the worst time to drop into my life. To be fair, I had managed to go almost twenty years without running into another. Thus I had gotten used to a quiet life free of constant battle. Admittedly, Haruhi was a new type of trial, but even her pushy attitude and complete lunacy was preferable to constantly battling other Immortals in a contest thatÆd seemed increasingly pointless. That peaceful life shattered only a few days ago when I was challenged by another.
ItÆd happened during one of HaruhiÆs night hunts, her logic being that some aliens or espers were nocturnal and likely to only move about under the cover of darkness. It was her usual logic, and I resigned myself to a long fruitless night of searching. Ah well, I figured, at least I could spend time with the darling Asahina.
I was rudely pulled from thoughts of my angel when the presence of another immortal impinged upon my awareness. I wonÆt go into details about what happened next. Suffice to say we adjourned to a nearby construction sight, empty in the evening gloom and began the duel. IÆm sure my opponent expected a quick and easy victory, what with my looking so young; he probably took me for a new immortal. Truth is, IÆve been alive since the Warring States period in my distant homeland, and had mastered the art of the sword by the time the land was being unified by the Emperor of Quin.
I took his head in short order.
ôWhere were you?!ö Haruhi demanded, foot tapping the ground, arms folded over her chest. Looking like a fussy mother hen in her winter coat.
I glanced at my fellow club members; KoizumaÆs phony smile was plastered on his face, while Yuki seemed as indifferent as ever, though she did take a moment to adjust her glasses as she looked at me. Darling Asahina was, of course, cowed into silence by the force of HaruhiÆs personality. No help there, but then I hadnÆt really expected any
ôWhat do you mean late?ö I said aloud, as I glanced at my watch. I know IÆm on time. After over a year of dealing with HaruhiÆs idiosyncrasies IÆd learned to leave early for any meeting lest I face another of her penalties.
ôOn time is late, and early is on time.ö She snorted, looking like a petulant pony. ôAnd you made us miss whatever caused that light show.ö
I blinked as she pointed over my shoulder, and gulped as I realized that she was pointing t the site where IÆd ended another Immortal. Turning back I found her staring at me curiously. Here it comesà.
ôSay, you passed right by there.ö Her eyes began to widen as her mind raced ahead. ôYou mustÆve seen what happened right?ö
I cough, buying some time to think. ôJust some kind of electrical disturbance at the construction site. A severed cable or some such.ö A quick look at her face showed that she wasnÆt really paying any attention to me.
ôLetÆs check it out.ö She said, and tromped off in that direction, mind having been made up before I spoke. The rest of the club follows dutifully behind. I grimace and hope that I hid the body in a place she wasnÆt likely to search.
ôYou have more data.ö I blinked and turned to find Yuki gazing at me, a slight ghost of a hint of a look of curiosity in her eyes. I glance up and note that no one else is paying us any attention.
ôMoreà.data?ö
Her eyes narrow just a bit. ôYou are changed.ö She elaborates.
I smile and shrug nervously. Figures, me being an immortal slips by the alien, but the quickening must have done something sheÆs picking up on. I play dumb and after a time she stops talking about. I donÆt think sheÆs dropped it, but IÆll deal with that later.
Long story short we searched and found nothing, much to HaruhiÆs disappointment. Once the group dissolved for the night, I went back and disposed of the corpse properly, and my days returned to normal.
Until another Immortal approached me today at lunch. His cover was as a substitute teacher, and though we appeared to be chatting amicable to everyone else, his speech was laced with veiled threats against the students if I didnÆt meet him after school.
Course Haruhi wanted to know more about this foreign teacher who seemed so familiar with me. I spun up some cock and bull story that wonÆt hold under the kind of scrutiny KoizumaÆs people can likely bring to bear, but I just need it to hold for now.
I consider telling Haruhi IÆll be late to club, but decided against it. If I win, IÆll only have to listen to one of her rants about my lack of dedication instead of two. If I die, well I wonÆt have to worry about it.
So I meet the guy in a park that dead at this time of day. HeÆs a lot better than the last one, great on offense and defense, just not both at the same time. He makes me work for it but I eventually take his head, my excitement at victory (and still being alive) dies as I hear and angelic gasp and turned to find the entire club watching me. Judging by the looks of surprise and horror on their faces, I guess theyÆve seen the whole fight.
As I open my mouth to speak the quickening engulfs me.

Now while KyonÆs reeling from that little revelation, he also becomes aware of why heÆs so protective of Asahina and Yuki, they both look and share many mannerisms of his past wives. In fact, if you account for the change in hair and the time period/culture he was wed to them in, they match up almost exactly. So now he starts to wonder, are they his wives? At some future date will Asahina and later Yuki travel through time for whatever reason and be the two women who helped him through some of the darkest moments in his life?
I was originally going to one shot all this, but I began to realize it might benefit from a longer more thorough telling. So IÆm putting it up for adoption.
