Evangelion Hidden facades of Shinji Ikari

I've always disliked canon!Shinji's meekness, the fact he was pushed around and had everyone's expectations piled on him like he was a packmule. And I don't know if I've ever read a fanfic that had Shinji having a secret identity, or was doing something that none had ever thought Shinji would be doing, all the while hiding behind a face of a wimp. I'm pretty sure I have, but I probably don't remember it, either being bad or having not gone very far. So the idea here is that Shinji is doing and has been doing something for sometime since his father abandoned him to his relatives.

The idea is Shinji doesn't just suddenly develop this secret identity/activity the week he came into Tokyo-3, but has actually been doing it for quite some time, resulting in him being a much different person than what people believe him to be, but was just hiding it behind a weak facade. Or he still has the weak facade, but has a deeper reason why he's like that.

The identity/activity could be anything: he has hidden weapon caches everywhere because he's a 'military otaku' ala Sousuke Sagara, he's the leader of a group of revolutionary penguins (to Pen2's delight), he's actually a multi-national famous chef that wears a mask, and, hell, he could even be the goddamn Batman for all I care.

This is an open idea, so you can make your own idea and people will help you either fine tune it, or criticize it to make it better.

Which actually brings me to my idea/contribution to this thread:

*****

It was a quiet time in Misato's apartment, Shinji decided. Misato and Asuka were both at NERV, Misato in a meeting that probably had to do with the [numerical value here] Angel, while Asuka shanghai'd Ritsuko and Maia into conducting more synchronization tests on her. Which left Shinji with the apartment all to himself.

Which gave Shinji a chance to do something he had not been able to do in awhile. Going into his room and then over to his closet, he pulled out the large case that contained his precious cello.

Setting himself up on the...living room, he first tuned his instrument, then began playing a simple tune, getting himself reaccustomed to the strings and the rhythm once again.

It was when he was playing a more complicated song did his hears caught a faint ringing. Stopping, he heard the ring again, before his eyes widened, and he ran back into his room, where he went to his backpack, and opening a hidden pocket, retrieved a sleek-black cellphone.

Flipping it open he saw that he had recieved a text message. He read the contents:

"To the Fourth Ranked Assassin of the UAA Asian Branch, Shinji 'The Peerless Cellist' Ikari,

You have been requested to attend and be present for a Rank battle, as the Fourth is heretofor challenged by the recongnized Fifth Ranked Assassin, named..."

As Shinji finished reading the letter, he couldn't help but give a sad sigh, an undefinable look in his face.

As he flipped the phone closed, he went back to the livingroom, where he packed his cello into its case once again. He then went on to take a quick bath a change of clothes. He then began writing a note for his two other roommates. When he was done, he left the message on the counter, retrieved his cello case, and moved to the front door.

As he finished slipping on his shoes, he muttered, "And it begins again." Then, he called out to the empty home, "I'll be going now." The tone of his voice made it sound like a final goodbye. Like Rei did during their fight against the Angel Ramiel, Shinji noted to himself.

And with a final click as the door closed, Shinji Ikari immersed himself once more into the world of blood and death.

*****

So, good, bad, so sad, or work on it a tad?

I know that people dislike the doormat that Shinji is in canon, but that's kind of the point.

He was never meant to be likeable, because the creators wanted to challenge the shounen action genre.

As for your idea, which appears to be a No More Heroes crossfusion, I think it is a bad idea.

1) What does Shinji use as his weapon of choice?

2) Where did he learn his skills? I know that ten years is a long time and from the ages of 4 to 14, you learn at a peak rate, but who would teach a child how to kill? Especially one as weak and cowardly as Shinji? What would they gain from this?

3) Gendo needs Shinji to be easily manipulated. I don't think that he's going to allow Shinji the chance to grow a backbone and endanger his master plan.

4) Text/SMS message =/= a letter. I know that's nitpicking a little, but please, you don't send "cover text messages" with official documents.

5) What's that? This is supposed to be crack and I'm over-analysing your idea? Well, that's too bad. You should have been funnier.

Rant Mode: On.

Seriously, I've seen so many "Shinji with a backbone" fics I've gotten bored with the whole genre. Sure, it's nice to read something amusing and/or affirming every once in a while, but a little originality would be nice too.

Yes, there's something to be said for having a different spin on an idea, and that can be original enough. But that only works if you have the writing skills for such a thing.

I've not seen anything here that suggests that you have these skills. Sorry to sound evil or arrogant, but that's the feeling I get when I see something where the author is under the impression that text messaging is synonymous with letter writing.

While "It's been done before" should not be used as a reason for not writing any more than "It's not been done before" should be used for writing, what are you adding?

What is your original spin on things?

I've seen stories where Shinji has no problems with killing people, either for fun or profit, so you're not treading new ground here.

Rant Mode: Off.

tl;dr version:

What are you 12?

I've read stories somewhat like this, though they are fairly rare.

One where he is a young british agent, another where he was an assassin sent to kill Ritsuko, another where he belongs to a rival organization and is a mole... One where he is really a seele agent, etc...

All things considered, I truly believe shinji did quite a good job coping... think on it, a 14 year old, no support, pretty much dumped and abandoned, been messed with by just about everyone in series for their own purposes, and not one of them ever bothered to tell him the truth about pretty much anything.

How the heck was he supposed to do good or win when he was set up for failure from age 4?

I have to agree with Lord Raa that Shinji being pretty much the opposite of your normal Shonen Hero was the point of his canon characterization. That said, I've often thought along similar lines - mainly that the Shinji that comes to Tokyo-3 is different from canon for whatever reason.

My personal favorite that I've come up with involves a cross-fusion of the worlds of Eva and Gatekeepers (mostly the anime continuity). In it Shinji is a member of the AEGIS network and a gatekeeper, though not necessarily an Invader Hunter (I had several reasons for this, though the one I'm most fond of is giving him the Gate of Death/Genocide as his positive gate). Main reason I haven't tried to do anything with it is that I can't really think of any kind of actual plot for such a story.

Though the idea of making Kensuke an undercover Invader Hunter is something I find intensely amusing.

[Rant Mode Snipped]
I pretty much said 'dislike' instead of saying 'hate', since I know Shinji had some redeemable qualities, but was pretty much outweighed by his iredeemable qualities. But that's just me making reasons to still like Shinji in some way.

Particularly why I came up with this idea was that I had just been playing NMH yesterday, and I was doing the Rank 8 battle when the conversation about 'hiding your true self from others' came up. I can't remember much, but one of the other Ranked had said that they couldn't distance themselves from they really were, with the close exception to Travis. Why not try to do that with other UAA Assassins? Try and distance themselves from 'that world' and live a relatively normal life in 'this world'? Well, if you count piloting Giant Robots and suffering emotional trauma and Heroic BSOD's along the way as normal.

To the questions before your Rant Mode:

1. How many weapons can you make out of a cello plus fiddle?

2. Who says someone had to teach him? Most of the people in NMH are already fucked up, so why not Shinji? And I'm somewhat sure that most of the Assassins weren't taught, especially if one is a head case psycho, while still being a hot chick with a bat and some issues, while another is a movie star. And how the hell can you teach someone who would eventually use CHEERLEADERS to form a Giant Robot? Or teach someone how to use a revolver with a revolving chamber for the revolving chambers? Or an astronaut? Or even a peripherally-broke Anime and videogame Otaku who won a beam katana from an online auction who would eventually become UAA Ranked 1 Assassin, two times?

3. But Gendo didn't particularly care how Shinji was brought up. Well, that's how I interpreted it. As long as he was a maniputable and thinks Shinji has no backbone, his Scenario is still valid.

4. Sorry, I was thinking one of those 'fancy-shmancy' phones that have those attatchment-thingies that lets you look at documents and things like those.

5. OMG, WTH. You still remember that nitpick of mine?

Anyways, to your Rant Mode; I admit I don't have anything to counter that, and I'm pretty sure I'm not treading on new ground here, especially with regards to Shinji and killing people (ARSENAL is the most recent example).

But the idea was supposed to be that Shinji DOES have some form of backbone, but just associates that with him being a UAA Ranked Assassin, but can/could not put it to use in 'this world' or just hide it extremely well from others, in fear of becoming rejected further than he already was.
