If You Made a Harem Anime...

Hello, I'm Myst Knight, here to talk about a inconsequential subject that is interesting nevertheless: harem anime letdown. Usually, it takes forever for the hero to choose a girl (if he ever does), and then it's never the girl you want. A common cure for this is fanfiction, where you can dump the unwanted canon love interest and hook your hero up with...whoever. But imagine taking the extra step: designing a harem series all on your own.

So if you made a harem anime/manga, what would it be like? What's the premise? Is your hero the typical lovable loser, or does he have any special attribute? What are the personalities of your girls? Who gets the guy, or do multiple girls end up with him? Be as indepth as you want, and have fun.

I had an idea one, partly inspired by Sabre Marionettes. As you can guess, all names are WIP:

About 650 years in the future, an unpleasant realisation comes to the various factional leaders of the remote colony world of Avon 5. Due to the planet having originally being founded by women, and the population mostly made of clones, the genetic bases of which are fading due to over-use, it looks as though the colony will be extinct within, at most, three generations.

The answer to their needs, quite literally, falls out of the skies one night during one of the frequent cosmic storms that are a fact of life in the Avon System. A century-old cargo freighter, the Star Calypso, comes out of hyperspace and crash-lands on a remote part of Avon 5, killing most of the crew, who are in suspended animation, but awakening the Captain, a New Zealander named "George Williams".

George is found by a Planetary Security Officer (equivalent to a UN Peacekeeper) named "Mara O'Hara", and the action picks up from there.

Character-wise, "George" is timid, but a kind and gentle person with a decent head on his shoulders, aged about 37. It might be interesting to play out that he's slightly gynophobic.

"Mara" would be a firm, handsome (not pretty) woman about 28 years old.

The only thing I'd do with a harem series is make it live up to its name. Just once, I'd like to see one that ends with the guy having an actual harem. No choosing just one girl, no ending on an ambiguous "I like you all, but I'm not actually involved with anyone" note - it'd end with him being in romantic/sexual relationships with all of the girls, and them being fine with (or even delighting in) it.

Hmm...

Hard to answer, actually. Personally, the whole harem thing doesn't go well with me. As for actually making one...not my cup of tea, actually. It's me - I prefer other things.

If I was to make an actual anime or series, mines would be more of an episodic, day-by-day account of soldiers in a future war. Action, politics, philosophy - all of that.

But, if I was to have an actual harem anime, I'd just let it go wherever. What I would do, actually, is work on the narration and storytelling. Maybe, set up one person all the girls are after, do all the stuff with that, but tell the story from a passive, third faction.

Okay, that does not make a lick of sense now, but if I have time, I'll elaborate a bit further. But then again, harem isn't exactly my thing.

No ultraviolent megabitches. I'm not saying all the characters have to get along flawlessly -- indeed, that'd probably be inhumanly boring -- but I'm really sick of the female characters who seemingly only exist to deal out insane amounts of slapstick violence to the male protagonist for the flimsiest of excuses; or when there isn't a convenient excuse, they make one up.

#6
Make it live up to its name, definitely. But I think doing that would be most interesting if you didn't break the character set until after the setup was complete. That is, at the beginning, the main character would be the loveable loser, there would be the violent bitch, the shy girl with a crush, the crazy one, the sexy one, etc. Then take on the challenge of developing each and every one of those characters in a way that makes them being in a happy harem believable and realistic.

Now THAT is an anime I wanna see, if it's done well.

That brings up a question I would pose... how do you make an anime (such as the one I just described) and include hentai without it being labeled solely as such? I'm not certain, but I think if you took the appropriate character development steps leading up to such, that is, ten or twelve episodes, before something happened, it wouldn't be seen as such a bad thing.

I guess you could do what Innortal usually does with his stories. Include tons of suggestive and/or sexual overtones, but nothing explicit. I am not sure if that alone is enough to warrant a Nc16 rating, but it should suffice in avoiding a Hentai rating. Plus, some things are better left unsaid(or unanimated). Sometimes, the effect is better if you just alluded to it and left it to the audience to imagine the rest for themselves, rather than spoon-feeding them... B)

Alright, here's my idea for a harem series, where I take some conventional elements and twist them to my liking.

Here's a small dossier on the girls. (a standard set of 5, just like most harem series)

Girl 1: Ultraviolent megabitch who beats Hero on flimsy pretext.
Girl 2: Drunken, gambling sexpot. Think Kitsune or Ryoko.
Girl 3: Awkward, meganekko-type. Think Taeko or Sheska.
Girl 4: Cheerful, little-sister figure.
Girl 5: Cold, precise robot girl.

Sounds boring, right? So let's mix it up a bit with a few amendments to the standard harem rule book.

A. The Hero character, in addition to being a nice guy, is also a talented young kickboxer.
B. When Girl 1, the ultraviolent one, belts Hero, the Hero fights back. While I despise domestic abuse, (though that's exactly what Love Hina entails) I'm thinking I could put them on equal footing, like that one family Guy episode with the free-for-all brawl between the Griffins. The Hero will be smashing Girl 1's head into the floor, while Girl 1 strangles Hero. A true battle-of-the-sexes.
C. Girl 4 is fat, and has a boyfriend.

Not enough? Then let's move on the the basic premise of the story.

Plotline: Despite Hero and Girl 1's inability to get along, they are constantly thrown into psuedo-romantic situations, almost as if there's some cosmic Rumiko Takahashi pulling the strings (plot point: there is). That's all pretty ordinary, but only if you were to overlook the fact that Hero actually likes Girl 3, the meganekko type. So with the help of Girl 4 and her boyfriend, Hero and Girl 3 struggle to find a way to develop a relationship, all the while trying to unllock the mystery surounding the cosmic author's neferious intentions. And instead of Hero and Girl 1 getting together, the climax of their relationship is a vicious, hard-core fight.

As you can see, this tale will function as its own story and as a parody of the harem genre. I'm sure there will be other twists that I would like to pull with story, as soon as I can think them up. One idea is to write the thing so that it seems that Girl 1 is the obvious choice, only to pull Girl 3 unexpectedly. Wouldn't it be nice to read a harem manga where you couldn't tell who the winning girl was going to be fifteen pages into Volume 1?

Get out of my brain.

Seriously, you're now on my "people who are awesome" list.

Anyway, if I made a "harem anime", I would only have ONE of the girls end of falling in love with the main hero. I feel really bad for the "runner-up" who ends up with nothing, you know.

Fantasy setting. Hero walks away from a ruined city, in the rain, in a deep funk. Behind him a bunch of bickering girls who managed to wreck the city and get them all exiled in the course of their fighting over him. He finally looses his temper, yells at them a lot and suddenly vanishes.

Cue a long quest by the girls (sometimes as a group, sometimes on their own or in pairs) to search for him and make it up to him, interspersed with flashbacks to previous disasters. I've no idea what would happen once they found the hero or why he'd vanished, but the focus of the anime would be on how the girls mature and build relationships with each other as they search for him.

After all, can a harem anime function when the boy the harem is built around is missing?

Wow, thanks a lot! I don't always enjoy that much popularity on the boards. (though there's always time to get unpopular later)

Creating a harem manga with a surprise love interest is tough though, since you have to be invested in creating a lengthy deception with the supposivebly obvious love interest/red herring in disguise. An example of something like this happening is Nadeciso, where Yurika dominates the love spectrum of Akito for three episodes, with the four episode seeing a underdeveloped bit character popping up into the romantic forefront all of a sudden. (of course, I heard that Nadesico ended up Akito/Yurika anyway, so go figure)

Okay, I just made an addition to my harem parody, inspired by my taping of Rocky -I-III on TNT the other day and watching them over and over again. Not only is the Hero a rising young kickboxer, he is a also a super fanboy of the Rocky series. Every episode of the harem series opens up with a segment of the Hero's absurd Rocky fanfic, where Clubber Lang assault Philedelphia in a giant mech, Rocky and Apolla fuse to form Rockpollo, and Adrian attacks enemies aboard a giant, fire-breathing dog.

Or better - Shuffle!

...I love Shuffle so much.

In any case, I find drakensis' idea for an anime particularly interesting. Of course, that would take more planning than the traditional anime, but that's a -good- thing.

Shuffle Memories 7 came out today, or well, yesterday, since it is now past midnight for me. A shame the Memories series is little more than a recompilation though. Oh well.

Okay, I've just thought about my ideas a bit. It sounds a bit depressing when I think about it, but hey, that's what happens to me when I watch the team lose.

Here's the set-up, part of something that I will dub 'From the Outside' for the moment - there are three 'primary' characters and the rest of the cast. The cast...they can be anybody, really. Emphasis on them differs as the series would hypothetically go on. The setting, I suppose, would be in university. To be honest, I'm not sure if this is really even a harem

The three characters that will be focused on consist of Boy 1, Boy 2, and Girl 1. Boy 1 is a good natured, good looking young lad. He's smart, somewhat athletic, but occasionally a bit of a klutz. Despite that, he holds a certain amount of appeal with the opposite sex, setting up for the potential harem situation. In addition, he has a rather unfortunate ability to attract attention from almost anything. He's a definite, unintentional troublemaker, so to speak.

Boy 2 is Boy 1's long time friend. However, he stands at a relative contrast to Boy 1. While 2 is just as smart, he is certainly not as attractive or athletic. He's socially awkward, a definate loner and more of a geeky nerd type that spends more time on his own as of late. However, he is exceptionally insightful and is a person who can analyze and understand people very well.

Girl 1 is a more cutesy close friend type. Girl 1 doesn't have the huge bust or the nicely shaped ass, but rather, a beautiful nerd sort of figure. But, it could be said that she is quite a looker. She has known Boys 1 and 2 for a long time, and the three have been a close group for just as long. She's smarter than both Boys 1 and 2 and while she is kind, she can occasionally display a rather impressive show of personality.

The basic history behind these three is that they were all social outcasts in the past, and all of them were drawn together at a young age. They stayed as extremely close friends for most of their junior high and early high school lives. However, as high school rolled around full force, their lives have begun to change. Boy 1 certainly changed and eventually became an athlete and now appears as quite delicious in the eyes of the opposite sex. In fact, he is now becoming a bit more of a playboy and an alpha male figure. The same with Girl 1, although she 'grew up', so to speak, a bit slower, but is on the way to transforming from nerdy little girl to babe and is beginning to want more from the rest of the world.

As for Boy 2, he has grown very little. He still remains in a socially awkward state, and he is certainly not the type that catches anybody's attention. Despite the changes amongst the group, they all retain a close sense of friendship with each other.

The true nature of their friendship would be revealed in flashback scenes and references. In present tense, the story takes place as all three enter a private university or school district. With them, they meet a whole range of people, in particular, the other members of the female cast. There's a lot of them, and they are of a rather wide variety. Also, with Boy 1 and Girl 1 having experienced growth, they're now ready to head into their new world.

The story would be narrated from Boy 2's perspective. His narration would tell the story of the original group of three, as well, describe the events that occur in particular to Boy 1 and the number of girlfriends and such that he will have relations with. Of those girls, it would be inevitable to consider Girl 1 as part of it as well.

Boy 2 would passively be the witness to all the adventures that would happen to Boy 1, Girl 1, the others, and occasionally, himself included - especially, as Boy 1 attracts the attention of the girls in the university. However, 2 acts as a bystander, watching as the world passes him by, taking his two friends along through the next step in life that has forsaken him. Essentially, what I would want it to tell the story from the perspective of an outside individual, but tell it so well that it would appear directly as though it is just being told normally, and to truly emphasize to how insignificant the narrator is in the series of events.

What I'd hope to accomplish with an idea like this is to analyze and approach a harem situation from a different view. Normally, we see the situation from the perspective of the male lead being involved directly in it. What about somebody who has no chance what-so-ever? What about the person who will always remain in the sidelines, figuratively, fated to be only able to look in from the outside? In such a case, that person would be a step back and he would be able to look at it and try to understand everything.

It would be more of a character developing process, especially when Boy 2 begins to talk a bit and think about the various girls that Boy 1 gets involved with, in particular, Girl 1 as she struggles with her feelings for Boy 1 and her attempts to understand where her life will go now.

...

Okay, weird idea, I know. I'm not even sure if it counts, fully, as a harem or whether I've simply wasted my time writing this. But, it's an idea I've had for a bit. I'm hoping it's different, but generally, I'd prefer developing my war idea more than anything else.

Legacy, you are aware that a story like that will ultimately generate an awful amount of sympathy and/or pity for Boy 2 right?

The premise of the story is one of the best I have ever seen thou and it takes a (for me) completely new approach on narrative style of a harem situation.

I can't really say much about the quality of the plot as I am already identifying myself with Boy 2. (although I tend to manipulate people around me, I just love creating arguments and full blown "nearly coming to blows" situations).

The best thing to end this story in my opinion would be an ending for the boy2 narration (the boygirl 1 situation) followed by an omniscient narrator ending the story by embedding the boy2 character into the actual ending of the story.

But I'm already giving pointers (I hate doing that as it ruins the surprise and suspense).

Hope you write this.

Definitely need to have it live up to its premise. Only one harem anime that ICR has actually ended up being an unambiguous harem is GXP. Maburaho inferred that could happen,as did Girls Bravo to an extent....but most end up with the frustration of the stupid contrived nice guy ending of Dual or Yumeria, the selection of the wrong girl in Love Hina,or the neverending end of the father of them all,Tenchi.

dammit

I want to see Yukinari bending Kirie over, while Yukinaria corners Chiharu.
I want to see Chitose winnow his way through his "Mamas"
I want to see Big,Elder,Darling ,Dearest Bro start to prove himself to his "sisters"

....and Tenchi, lose the virginity it`s been twelve years!

Ummm... would not Happy Lesson also apply?

As for Girls Bravo, I thought that a not so bad start first season, but a really crappy second season. Kirie was way underused, and felt she got the shaft.

Okay hereÆs how it is. There was a war, and though someone technically won, everyone lost. The various nations have gone back to their own territories to lick their wounds and try prevent the total collapse of civilization. This means that vast sections of country land and some cities are for all intents and purposes, lawless.

The story opens with three sisters whoÆve opened their massive farm to a number of displaced orphans and widows. Few trustworthy men are around as many of the good oneÆs weÆre either killed in the war, by bandits after the war or have debilitating injuries that prevent them from effectively protecting their families.

Enter the Hero

At first no one trusts him, and he lives off the land by himself at the edge of their property. However he acts as a guardian angel to the residents, protecting them from bandits and worse, and is soon brought into the community. When asked, our hero admits that he knew the three sisterÆs father during the war and promised him that heÆd take care of his daughters if he didnÆt make it back. Feeling a debt to the old man heÆs chosen to follow through on his promise.

However, he doesnÆt tell them that he and their father were on opposite sides during the war and met most often on the battle field and sometimes in neutral zones. Though they developed a mutual respect and fondness for one another they ended up in a fight to the death during the final battle. The Hero killed the father, though it tore his heart to do so, and after the war decided he owed it to the old man to keep his word.

Thus at first the story deals partly with trying to survive in a lawless and seemingly hopeless period. It also a bit about redemption tale as the hero tries to atone for what heÆs done.

Now each of the three sisters starts to take a shine to him, however they are not the only ones. Many girls of marrying age and some of the younger widows are giving him the look as they see him as a ray of hope in their lives, especially as he manages to pull some of the elderly men and older boys into something resembling a fighting force to protect their homes.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

I think Kirie kind of got the wrong shaft in GB as well. It`s kind of strange, but she`s the violent girl in the anime...and I still like her best. 2nd season,I thought, had its moments....redeeming Fukuyama was a waste of an episode and a half, however. On the bright side,Chiharu seemed to be quite open to a harem type relationship...and Kirie still has wonderful gainaxing breasts. That has to count for something.

Kirie actually STOPPED a few times. That counts for a lot. I haven't finished watching it all, to tell the truth, but the first bit of the second season doesn't seem so bad... but yeah, redeeming Fukuyama? Waste of time. He was much funnier before. Garbage man? The only reason I liked him is because he brought Fukuyama's maid onto the character list. She's cool. Nuts, but cool.

If you wanna write the broken harem viewed by the outsider without a chance, watch Honey and Clover, both seasons. Its full of relationships where one loves another while a third pines away hopelessly. Not traditional harem, but love pentangle isn't far wrong.

I like the suggestion of the post apocalyptic survivor harem story, but it seems a little hard to work with unless its basically a more modern version of Cold Mountain.

The key question to ask with any harem is: why would women willingly and knowingly sleep with one guy who is sleeping with other women? Women are really competitive when it comes to men and breeding rights. They'd just as soon destroy the guy as lose to another woman. So you have to provide an adequate answer to that question for your harem to work. Exotic settings work, of course, but they're a lot of work to write up. Ai Yori Aoshi has a great harem setup written by A2Z, based on the premise that "we have to disguise Kaoru's girlfriend with someone else as bait" and ends up sleeping with all of them regularly. Or Keitaro sleeping with three of the girls to protect "Shinobu and Kaolla from him snapping" as in "taking some for the team". Weird reasons can prompt these kinds of solutions.

In my experience you get harems for 3 reasons: playboys, college experimentation, or deliberate design by the alternative crowd.

Playboys tend to catch diseases and infect their partners, so everyone involved catches the disease, called the "spreading tree" by epidemiologists. Lots of small towns suffer this kind of thing, where half the high school suddenly gets Herpes or Syphilis after one of them screws a college kid while on vacation.

I knew someone online who practiced a deliberate polyamory, and knew someone else in college who was in a sexual commune, where everyone slept with everyone else. She was a sick a lot, and didn't talk about her homelife. The other one spent a lot of time bitching about her jealousy, and bragging about her love life, which seemed rather contradictory.

The accidental kind caused by youthful hijinks seem to center on naive and inexperienced women who are too trusting, and men/boys who exploit the situation. While all might be too sexually inexperienced to suffer disease, as it tends to be very shortlived, the mess might be something whispered about for years afterwards. This happens in small towns, in repressive schools, and summer camps across the world.

I know for a fact that reverse harems exist on US Naval vessels which allow women on cruises. A woman with 5-30 boyfriends, who know about each other because she's the only woman around, and practicing safe sex lets her service them all. She might not find gratification consistently with each of them, but multiple daily encounters via different men will generate enough satisfaction to make the effort worthwhile, thus somewhat sustainable. So reverse harem on military vessels.

It gets more interesting when you throw in scientific expeditions. Some sciences are still male dominated, but many are now female dominated, such that its 10 women to 1 man in certain disciplines. A college class in a remote location, lots of fresh air, no other people around, and a male to tease... if he has stamina and quick recovery time he could find himself busy servicing various women of his expedition. Perhaps not all, as some are slower moving, but enough that he'll be pretty exhausted. Same situation in a genetics/biology lab, where the male lab assistant works with a lot of female researchers and technicians. They flirt, he responds, and they get busy in a popular janitor's closet or other quiet alcove. Privacy for mating is surprisingly easy to come by when you care to look for it. And most people will give them their privacy if accidentally discovered. If you're not invited, its not like you're going to force your way into play. Offices in general are hotbeds of sex, particularly if there are women in number and a few men, regardless of status.

So keep that in mind when you figure out your harem setup. It should make sense somehow and provide a reason for them to be together.

Way I figure it, the only way for a harem to work consistently is for it to not be centered around one person, even if that seems to be the definition. The only way for it to work consistently without jealousy being an issue is a well cultured 'all for one and one for all' attitude. That is, once it's coherent. During formation, all kinds of issues will come up, but if you can get to that point with everyone in the relationship, I'd think it would hold pretty cohesively unless something disrupted the balance.

Or there's always the 'not gonna think about it' route for the girls, that is, each decides that they will not worry about it and take things as they are. Takes some very laid back women to do that (which are rare themselves, from what I can tell...) though.

As usual, blowing steam out of my ass, but that's what my logic says to me in this slightly sleep deprived state.

EDIT: I'm also glad we're doing hypothetical realistic, otherwise this thread would be catgirl genocide.

Well, there are real-life harems, so even if someone wishes to use logic to try and tear apart any of the aforementioned points, they will have their work cut out for them.

I probably would not be fazed if someone suddenly told me that some of the scenarios mentioned had already occurred in reality... :D

And besides, I think that it is clear enough that this thread is based solely on imagination. Right...? :unsure!:
