How would the crew of Serenity handle finding their most hazardous cargo yet? And if that cargo would happen to be a derelict entry plug coasting on a trajectory from Earth, with the scattered remains of a crippled Unit-01, could the salvaged Shinji Ikari grasp how mankind had changed?

Finally, would the Third Child's experiences make him the only one that understands half of what River says?

First of all, clearing up origins, I think you'd wanna go with the "Dimensional Misplacement" idea, perhaps Yui's last act to get Shinji out of there. Don't go overboard explaining it, maybe have River pick up on Yui's gratitude as they're flying away from Unit 01's remains so she can have a clue about why Shinji's history and theirs don't match. Leave it at that if you can; no use murking the waters.

Now, to ideas... after Shinji wakes up and goes a little crazy... maybe he runs and screams, or maybe he thinks he's just hallucinating, or both... I can see River giving him a hug and telling him "Don't worry, it's okay now." completely out of the blue.

Jayne: Hey Doc, if your crazy sister is comforting somebody, what's that say about their sanity?

And of course, Mal and Jayne are going to be complaining about another crazy passenger. Though I think Shinji will calm down once he figures out he's not dead or crazy, and realizes he has a whole new lease on life. And of course, once he gets over moping about everyone he's ever known being dead.

River: Quit moping. You're giving me a headache watching you.

For the moment, I think he'll probably try to make himself useful. See if he can't make something palatable out of their food supply, perhaps. Clean up around the place, that sort of thing.

Jayne: What the hell happened to my room? How'm I supposed to find anything now!?

Hm... actually, I don't think he'd have that great of an effect on the crew, though the effect on Shinji would probably be drastic. It might be pretty funny the first time they start getting shot at, when Shinji realizes he's thrown in his lot with a bunch of criminals and that he's likely to be in the line of fire quite often.

Simon might enjoy having someone else who's "sane" around the ship. Kaylee and Inara might end up doing that mothering thing with him.

Would this idea take place before or after the Big Damn Movie?

My vote is for before, If onl y because I like Book and Wash, but if it's set after, then Zoe would have a bit more of a grasp of Shinji's emotional state.

I also agreethat Eva should not have taken place on earth-that-was, and thankfully, due to AT mindfuckery, it's actualy plausable for some sort of demension shift to have occured.

The main problem I can think of is the Shinji's english would be rudimentary at best, and not in the same way as 'Verse english. But that could be overcome with only mild problems. (have him mention how he excelled in english or something)

Those issues asside, this sounds like win on a stick.

I wonder, would Shinji be able to manipulate an AT field? I don't ever think he'll be telepathic but being able to do telekenisis by way of manipulating his AT field would be badass.

Plus you can control how powerful he can get, he's not in an EVA so his control WOULD suck, I doupt he'd ever be able to power an AT field strong enough to stop more than a FEW light caliber rounds (like from Mal's gun) but that's not where the fun would come from. Being able to do "Force Chock" ala'Vader style is much to fun not to use. Plus his real application would come from being able manipulate object from afar like opening locked doors/cuffs/cells with a thought- he'd still have to deal with alarms but eh, no ones perfect. Plus being able to sense people almost like River could help too.

She senses people by their thoughts, him by their very presence.

My main idea was to keep Shinji "normal", as normal as a Marduke Qualifier can be, at least. There would be no super powers, no deus ex machina, or any of that sort of thing. Rather, it would just be Shinji trying to be Shinji.

That is, until a certain Nevada based S2 equipped Unit comes through to the other side, and there's an opportunity for both Serenity's crew to make a profit, and a way for Shinji to screw things up enough so he can get home.

Mal stared back up at the giant monster with paper-thin projectiles for arms. "Somehow, I figure headin' for Earth wasn't the greatest idea..."
