Introduction Board

While admittedly, TFF has taken great pains to seperate itself from the mass of forums out there, I think there is one thing that every forum should have.

TFF, I'm proud to say, has been growing by leaps and bounds. How many members do we have here? Over 5,000?

Although those numbers are mainly lurkers and those who joined just to get access to the lemon section, even if just a third of those members post regularly, that's still a great deal of people.

I propose an Introduction thread for n00bs of all sorts to post in. This gives us a chance to welcome them formally and show them that TFF is not all business when it comes to being a Hivemind. ^_^

I also think that if this were to be made, this would be a more accessible place to pin the Rules (Both unoffical and official), so n00bs won't have to waste energy clicking any more than they have to. I mean come on, how many here have actually read Hawk's rules? Matter of fact, I'm not even sure if I have.

-facepalm-

But I digress.

Win? Fail? Maybe?

Officially, there are 5951 members on TFF. Sadly, I'm willing to guess that only a fraction are active posters, but it's quite a bit none the less.

As for an introduction thread...personally, I don't think it's strictly necessary. Nice? Perhaps, but I find introductions and transition right into posting will come when new members post directly rather than introducing themselves via an introduction topic.

In regards for the rules, I think they're in a good place already. The Announcements, News & Rules bit is right at the top of the forum, and that has generally everything necessary already, and in a convenient place.

This was partly in reply to the first post I ever made here, courtesy of F1 him/her/omgtentaclesself. And it seems to pretty much sum up the attitude of TFF.

Hah. TFF doesn't really have an introduction grounds. You're just supposed to pop in and talk like you've been in here the entire time.
Of course, seeing as my first post was accidentally necroing a year-dead thread...

I dunno, I like the idea, but I don't think we necessarily have to have one.

I did the same as some have said already, I just started posting pretty much.

Admittedly, I did have another account here ever briefly (one on the first page of the forum member list even), but lost the password to that account since I kinda wasn't too active with it and I got too busy with work to even pay attention to the forum for a few months.

Since I ended up a bit more active after that (well, that was the plan, but turned out to be the case in the end), I just went and made a new account.

Anyhow, more on topic: Nah, an introduction board isn't particularly that needed.

Can't remember what my first post here was, but I agree we need a general discussion area of sorts. Not necessarily a Intro Board, but it would help in discussion about other topics rather than hopping between sections and looking for them.

We have a General area. 2 in fact. One for fanfiction, and noe for non-fanfiction.

I don't think an introduction board is necessary. Sure, we may have nearly 6000 people registered, but how many of them actually have any posts at all?

And of the number who have any at all, how many have as many as, say, a hundred? Which in itself is practically none if someone's been around a while.

I didn't say that it was necessary, only that it might be a nice addition and encourage those who would otherwise lurk to post. The more people we have talking and making conversation, the better, right?

More accessible? What the hell?

The first thing you should do when joining any forum is read the rules. It's not about 'accessibility' (THE RULES ARE RIGHT THERE, you know, 'Announcements, News, and Rules'?), it's about common freaking courtesy. Or, you know, if you don't want to get banned. Whatever works.

I don't really care about the whole introduction grounds topic, honestly. I only post in those things nowadays because I consider it polite, but if there are no introduction grounds, there's no reason to be extend that courtesy, no? But as I said, I don't really care, so if it came down to it, I wouldn't mind it, either. *shrug*

Okaaaay...not sure why this irritated you. It's been my experience that people new to forums automatically assume that they know everything and thus don't need to read the rules. You're right, it is a common courtesy to the users of the forum, but be honest, how many n00bs do you know take the time out of their day to meticulously read every rule?

Admittedly, starting out in another forum before I came here, I made the same mistake. The introduction thread was in one place and the riules another. I managed to get along with the members of the forum until I made a few mistakes, after which I was directed to the Rules.

Like I said, it's not that big a deal, only it might encourage would be lurkers to begin actively posting and have the Rules staring them right in the face.

-shrug-

I'm for an intro thread, but I won't hold a rally for it either.

Hmmm... the rules to this forum though give a different expectation than the actual experience, at least, that is the way it came across to me when I started here.

In the end, I basically felt my way around any issues.

That is neither a knock against this place, not a vote of support for it, just the way it was for me.

Meh, the actual rules here are mostly common sense and a tad of netiquette anyway ( Mainly because I'm too much of a lazy bastard to come up with some intricate and complicated rule system that actually has to be actively enforced... ), so it's kinda hard to break them, meaning less work for me. :)

There's always the unwritten rules, of course ( Never *ever* complain if it's porn, no matter how disgusting, alien or revolting you might find it. Prepare for a beatdown if you necro a thread. If at first you don't succeed, wank off until you do. ), but they're enforced more by the forums members then the admin.

I certainly don't give a rats ass if somebody necro's a thread with a 'Yay! Just like the fifteen other people who responded back when this thread was active, I agree because I am too much of a moron to have an opinion of my own'-post. I don't necessarily approve or like it, but I don't really care either. But there's likely ten people who do and just can't prevent themselves from posting to let the offender know that fact. :)

I also have a tendency to let minor offences slide, unless somebody actually complains about them, so the rules aren't iron-clad either. Though you never know when somebody might send in a report, so I wouldn't take any chances on me being too lazy'n lenient to do something about an offence you're considering. :)

I totally nailed my entrance then.
:eek:t:
I think one of my first posts was... hmm...

I think it was somewhere in the Naruto forum, I snapped after hearing one too many people trying to understand how Tsunade's age/appearance genjutsu works, when it's not a genjutsu at all. A friend of mine IRL once described it as "The end-all-be-all of finally explaining it and shutting them all up" and I'd like to be able to quote it, but I'm also not digging through 95+ pages of Naruto Ideas/Previews/Talk threads to find it.

We don't really need an Introduction Board. Sigs, avatars, and a unique posting style are all we need, from F1's unknown gender (him/her/futa-with-tentacles?), to Hawk's ability to make the entire forum swarm like a zergling rush whenever he updates, or my inability to make more than two posts without using ellipsis...
