Huh. Well, I just asked a lawyer relative of mine and he agreed. It seems it is both. My mistake.

Of course, that's not gonna stop me from sneaking in anytime soon, but it's always good to know where you stand legally.

I'm not even thinking of this as a Karate Kid movie... For me the Karate Kid movies ended after the 2nd movie... This newest rendition just seems to me like someone took the basic premise of the Karate Kid movies made a new script based on it, and is trying to capitalized on the Karate Kid name....

Heck since it takes place in China, shouldn't it be Kung Fu Kid and not Karate Kid?

I just watched the trailer.

If I completely disassociate this new movie from the old Karate Kid franchise, which is pretty easy to do because apart from the name it seems to have almost nothing in common, then this new movie looks like it might be good. I like Jackie Chan movies, but I've not liked many of his recent movies. This one might reverse that trend.

Of course the flip side is that without thinking of the old franchise, that fly swatter scene at the end of the trailer wouldn't have meant anything to me. As it is, it was pretty funny.

That's called a tribute scene. If you re-use a premise, a tribute scene is almost a must, even if you shift the details so far it's unrecognizable from the original.

And yeah, I think looking at this as unrelated to the old ones will mean it'll be a decent martial arts/sports movie.

Okay, my biggest problem like the poster is the name, Not Karate, so it shouldn't be the Karate Kid,

Now, The movie as a whole, I don't have a problem with, but yeah, Hollywood is headed out of it's twilight years and slowly entering the stage where we should dump it in a greasy cheap retirement home so we don't have to think about it anymore.

It needs new blood so bad it's not funny.

And they NEED to stop following the formula and take some damn chances.

Anyways, back to the movie now that I'm done with my little rant, I don't really have a problem with remakes, (though the fact they're remaking Short Circuit kinda pisses me off.)

I am certainly not fond of remakes. It really feels like the only thing people can do nowadays is remake an older idea. Seriously, what ever happened to that thing called 'originality'?

IMO you will be hard pressed to find anything aside from really old fables/myths* that does not borrow heavily from another source. So I'm fine with a remake just so long as it is done *well*. That means that they have to have good acting, the plot needs to be done will, and the characters have to feel right for there roles. Just so long as those are done, they can remake all they like for all I care.**

*And there is even evidence suggesting that many old fables/myths are just retellings of even older stories.

**Note this does not mean that I would continually see the same thing over and over, but that is more from the fact that after a while a particular idea, trope can get boring and routine to me, and so I would look for something that is different. Not that the remake is necessary bad.

I watched it yesterday. Fell asleep after the first hour or so. The kid was so stale with his lines, and not even Jackie could save it.

Trespass is an unlawful intrusion that interferes with one's person or property. Sneaking in is theft, not trespass, same as illegal downloads.
Illegal downloads are copyright infringement, not theft. It's not a criminal law matter unless you're up to serious shenanigans. Bit difference from theft which is criminal law from the start.

Saw the movie. Enjoyed it. Cheng was awesome. That kid was basically the reason I had fun in the movie. Also, the stunts made me go whut all the time, since like their 12 and doing stuff thats like whoa.

Also, mohawk kid was amazing.

Just saw the movie, danm good, even if a bit to strong on the message of the story, but that's a sin in most movies, I really need to see the "behind the scenes" to know which parts are done with stunts and blue screen and which parts are the children.

I do admit that the junior actors probably got a real future as actors, even if Will Smith was part of the producers.

Let me give my review of the film. First off aside from the obvious "Karate" goof-up the film was done very well.

The kid was also damn good as far as acting goes and after having seen Avatar the Last Airbender (thank the gods I didn't pay) was a VERY pleasant surprise. Maybe its the good pedigree or maybe its just that he has more acting experience but Jaden Smith did an awesome job for his age. He also was learning actual Kung Fu for the film and one of his personal instructors was Jackie Chann himself so I'm sufficiently jealous.

Jaden Smith has a LOT of potential to go VERY far in the acting business and if he keeps up the Kung Fu training like I suspect he might, we'll eventually have on our hands one hell of an "Action Hero" for movies.

Jackie Chann in this film surprised the hell out of me, he has this little scene with jaden in a car he rebuilds over the coarse of the movie where much to my shock convincingly just falls apart crying. My jaw dropped in amazement cause as far as acting goes, Jackie Chann has NEVER done that in a film before. That was the most emotional role I've ever seen him in and the best part of it all? it got to me, I mean it REALLY got to me. I felt sympathy for Jackie's character and shed a couple of tears myself.

This was no "Rumble in the Bronx" for Jackie but as far as acting goes? This has got to be the best I've ever seen him.

Now that's all for the main players of the film. Many of you has made comments about how the movie should have been called "the Kung Fu Kid" and I agree with ya. It would have gotten away with it too as it only has a couple passing references to the old film but the director has a sense of humor it seems cause they actually DO make fun of that IN the movie itself.

The mother in the film was also great, she may be only a side character but I'll tell you what she definetly plays the role of "Mom" like she has kids of her own.

The group of bullies from the film are also pretty well done - its been many years since I've seen the original film but I think the bullies from the new one just had more personality to them they weren't completely mindless goons like their American counterparts, plus having them younger makes it easier for the audience to "forgive" them when they have face-heel-turn moment at the end of the film.

Overall I give this movie 5 stars, it may not get an Emmy but I think it'll be given consideration on the list.

PS- also to those of you who still go on about how they should have called it the Kung Fu Kid, that final move from the original film? ya, that's CRANE STYLE KUNG FU, the original movie was guilty of having the wrong name as well.

PPS- And ya Mohawk kid was pretty damn awesome for only being in the film all of 30min.
