Looking for a wargaming system

Does anyone know a good system for running battles on the army scale? I've been reading Erfworld, and it's reawoken my strategic mind. D&D is fun, but the idea that hundred or thousands could die by your command... it's nice, even if those thousands are imaginary.

So, any ideas for a system I could use?

Sigh, its model based. So you are going to have to purchase over 200 dollars worth of stuff. If you ARE going for a model based system Id suggest warmachine instead. Unless you WANT scifi in which case 40k is probably your best bet. If you want a thousands scale than EPIC 40k is your best bet. However very few people play epic.

Most wargaming is model-based, but you might try to search for the Battlesystem book, it was made for AD&D 2. ed, but could be adapted for 3.ed. Also, it has a system for creating new units from statistics, which can help to tie it into a campaign.
