In April 2000, it dawned on Doctor Katsuragi that his assignment -- the contact experiment between the Solenoid Construct (codenamed LANCE) and Subject-01 -- might have catastrophic results, releasing a quantity of energy to the surface of the Earth unprecedented within human memory. To prevent unnecessary tragedy, he began working around the clock to devise an emergency countermeasure, just in case ...
In early September, after many delays, the countermeasure was complete -- a field generation device that would collapse and fuse Subject-01 into a "containment vessel." There was only one drawback: the "vessel" in question had to be a human being.
September 13th, 2000 -- the Contact Experiment:
Subject-01 did not respond as expected. Rather than simply releasing energy, contact with the Solenoid Construct caused it to awaken, and it began to wreak havoc across the laboratory complex. By the time Katsuragi managed to get his bearings, he was stranded in a half-demolished building near the field generation device. The only other living person in the vicinity was his unconscious 14-year-old daughter, Misato.
If left unrestrained, Subject-01's actions could result in untold casualties. Not seeing another solution, Katsuragi placed his daughter into the Field Generation System and activated it ...
September 18th, 2000:
Contact was lost with the UN-funded Geofront-01 Laboratory at Mount Markham after a series of what appeared to be multi-kiloton bomb detonations occurred in its vicinity. Owing to severe weather, it was nearly four days before the search and rescue unit dispatched from a nearby American research installation reached the site. What they discovered was pure massacre -- the remains of the lab resembled a warzone, strewn with the corpses of the resident researchers.
At the center of the wreckage, they found a catatonic teenage girl. Strangely, there was a tattoo-like pattern of scar tissue on her stomach ...
August, 2015:
A giant humanoid creature appears on the Pacific coast of Japan, laying waste to much of the eastern seaboard. Unable to mount a significant counterattack, the JSDF turns to the UN-backed paramilitary organization, NERV.
Under the leadership of Captain Katsuragi Misato, the Evangelion pilots will defend the Earth from the threat of the angels! Believe it!

[22:58] <@Fallacy> misato is a bit (a lot?) different. maybe other people are too
[22:59] <@Fallacy> she has unlimited regeneration and no hangovers
[22:59] <@Fallacy> she's probably bulletproof too, though she might not know that
[23:00] <@Fallacy> if she burps, she might bring up an AT-field
[23:01] <@Fallacy> it would be amusing if she somehow started unconsciously producing kage bunshin
[23:02] <@Fallacy> things start happening differently at around the time of the 5th angel
[23:03] <@Fallacy> instead of drilling downwards, ramiel realizes that adam is near where the snipers are
[23:06] <@Fallacy> since, in canon, kaworu had the soul of adam
[23:07] <@Fallacy> kaworu probably doesn't exist
[23:07] <@Fallacy> and misato is actually tabris
[23:07] <@Fallacy> ironically, she wants revenge on adam
[23:07] <@Fallacy> (effectively, she *is* adam at this point)
