In April 2000, it dawned on Doctor Katsuragi that his assignment -- the contact experiment between the Solenoid Construct (codenamed LANCE) and Subject-01 -- might have catastrophic results, releasing a quantity of energy to the surface of the Earth unprecedented within human memory. To prevent unnecessary tragedy, he began working around the clock to devise an emergency countermeasure, just in case ...

In early September, after many delays, the countermeasure was complete -- a field generation device that would collapse and fuse Subject-01 into a "containment vessel." There was only one drawback: the "vessel" in question had to be a human being.

September 13th, 2000 -- the Contact Experiment:

Subject-01 did not respond as expected. Rather than simply releasing energy, contact with the Solenoid Construct caused it to awaken, and it began to wreak havoc across the laboratory complex. By the time Katsuragi managed to get his bearings, he was stranded in a half-demolished building near the field generation device. The only other living person in the vicinity was his unconscious 14-year-old daughter, Misato.

If left unrestrained, Subject-01's actions could result in untold casualties. Not seeing another solution, Katsuragi placed his daughter into the Field Generation System and activated it ...

September 18th, 2000:

Contact was lost with the UN-funded Geofront-01 Laboratory at Mount Markham after a series of what appeared to be multi-kiloton bomb detonations occurred in its vicinity. Owing to severe weather, it was nearly four days before the search and rescue unit dispatched from a nearby American research installation reached the site. What they discovered was pure massacre -- the remains of the lab resembled a warzone, strewn with the corpses of the resident researchers.

At the center of the wreckage, they found a catatonic teenage girl. Strangely, there was a tattoo-like pattern of scar tissue on her stomach ...

August, 2015:

A giant humanoid creature appears on the Pacific coast of Japan, laying waste to much of the eastern seaboard. Unable to mount a significant counterattack, the JSDF turns to the UN-backed paramilitary organization, NERV.

Under the leadership of Captain Katsuragi Misato, the Evangelion pilots will defend the Earth from the threat of the angels! Believe it!

[22:58] <@Fallacy> misato is a bit (a lot?) different. maybe other people are too
[22:59] <@Fallacy> she has unlimited regeneration and no hangovers
[22:59] <@Fallacy> she's probably bulletproof too, though she might not know that
[23:00] <@Fallacy> if she burps, she might bring up an AT-field
[23:01] <@Fallacy> it would be amusing if she somehow started unconsciously producing kage bunshin
[23:02] <@Fallacy> things start happening differently at around the time of the 5th angel
[23:03] <@Fallacy> instead of drilling downwards, ramiel realizes that adam is near where the snipers are
[23:06] <@Fallacy> since, in canon, kaworu had the soul of adam
[23:07] <@Fallacy> kaworu probably doesn't exist
[23:07] <@Fallacy> and misato is actually tabris
[23:07] <@Fallacy> ironically, she wants revenge on adam
[23:07] <@Fallacy> (effectively, she *is* adam at this point)

This, I like. That's so damn clever. I just don't want to be there when she finds out.

So, Second Impact in this story was a very small, localised series of explosions? Not a near Apocalypse?

Yes.

Canonically, the release of Adam's energy during the 2nd Impact was caused by a second unknown event after the initial contact with the Lance of Longinus awoke him. There's nothing written anywhere regarding what happened exactly -- it might have simply been that his "Giant of Light" form was inherently unstable and broke down.

The Lance itself has a form of force field emanating from its blades that locally "drains" the AT-field exposed to it. Consequently, when planted in Lilith's body, it causes an ongoing breakdown of Lilith's body -- which is why Lilith appears to "bleed" LCL. The "field generator" that Katsuragi developed here is based along similar principles, draining the entirety of Adam's AT-field -- and by extension, his very existence -- into Misato's body.

The process was not 100% efficient, and stray energy that escaped the field caused the explosions I described around the laboratory at Mt. Markham. Still, the greatly reduced shockwaves released by the event were sufficient to wake the angels slumbering around the world.

It's likely that SEELE is aware that Misato has some "irregularities" in her body -- however, she probably does not have an S^2 Organ or a Core visible to medical scanning, and they may consequently dismiss her as being of significance. (Her brain may have taken on the functions of both organs.)

"Tabris, the 17th Angel" probably does not exist -- it may be only a codename for a "key" that delivers the soul of Adam to Lilith, created by humans to prime her for the 3rd Impact. Misato here would be equivalent to Kaworu in the grand scheme of things, as well as ultimately ability-wise.

Which raises the interesting question, what happens if she touches Rei, given that Rei is a clone of Lillith.

Also, do you have any pairing for her in mind?

According to the Red Cross Book:
[Rei Ayanami]
The First Children, and dedicated pilot of Eva-00.á A young girl who apparently lacks emotions.á Her body was created from the salvaged remains of Yui Ikari after Yui was taken into the Eva, and numerous Rei clones were then prepared in Terminal Dogma so that when one Rei dies she can be replaced by another.á The present Rei is the third.á The first was killed by Dr. Naoko Akagi, and the second died in battle against the 16th Angel.á Although the personalities of these three Rei differ from one another, this is due to environmental factors.á Their soul is one and the same, and it appears to have been that of Lilith.á At the final stage of the Instrumentality Project, Rei betrayed Gendou, returned to Lilith of her own judgment and entrusted the future to Gendou's son -- Shinji Ikari.á Birth date: unknown
Rei is not a clone of Lilith. She is a clone of Ikari Yui, inhabited by at least part of the soul of Lilith. She doesn't have Lilith's entire soul -- if she did, there would be no soul to maintain the AT-field of the crucified body below NERV, and it would collapse into LCL. Also, at least a part of her soul is not Lilith's, and maintains the Yui-like body. (This is the part that is inherent to the clones.) The part of Lilith's soul that Rei possesses is probably a critical part, which is why Lilith became active after Rei rejoined her.

If Misato were to touch Rei, either:

a) Rei would turn into goo after her soul is absorbed into Misato, and they wouldn't be able to awaken another clone. Nothing else happens.

b) Rei would be rendered catatonic after her soul is absorbed into Misato, and they wouldn't be able to awaken another clone. Nothing else happens.

c) A highly incomplete 3rd Impact occurs.

d) Nothing happens. This is likely, as Kaworu was in close proximity of Rei without anything occurring. Given, Misato has a higher degree of Adam in her than Kaworu did ...

There are other possibilities, but those are the most obvious ones. For the purposes of this story, I would assume that D is correct, simply because random 3rd Impact isn't fun.

And no, I don't have a pairing in mind.

Regarding Katsuragi's Field Generator: It's possible that the Lance was used as a critical component.

For reference, the Lance is canonically referred to as a "Solenoid Construct" -- though the meaning of this has never been explained. Fans have speculated that it may be a part of Adam's S^2 Organ or Core, which was somehow separated from his body. The AT-field absorption phenomenon is comparable to the the "Anti-AT-field" that collapsed the bodies of humanity during the 3rd Impact.

A "Solenoid" is a tightly wound helix, as with a spring -- if you like, a spiral shape of a sort. In mechanics, a solenoid is a transducer device -- something that converts energy from one form into another. An example of a device that combines both senses of the word: the electrical coils around the tube of a coil gun, whose electromagnetic field launches a projectile (electrical force -> kinetic force). A "Super Solenoid Organ" appears to be a spiral construct of some sort that converts the soul into effectively infinite power ...

If Ritsuko were somehow able to salvage the plans for the device, it's possible that she could reconstruct it as a weapon for use against the Angels -- a Tang-ification Gun, or something like that. The "containment vessels" in this case would probably be the Evangelions themselves, and using this method to defeat angels would probably give the EVAs nice little S^2 Organ collections inside their bodies ... which SEELE would find annoying, as they don't really want any of the EVAs getting those. It messes up their planned scenario.

Since we're getting into slightly more complicated AT-field technology beyond simple barrier generation and cancellation, we should be reminded that the S^2 Organ actually allows the Angels to convert produce effectively infinite energy. This energy does not necessarily come in the form of heat or light or kinetic motion -- rather, each Angel is capable of using it in a selection of different "formats," which allows them to produce energy blasts, reshape their body at will, and sustain the biological function of their bodies in such a manner that they seem immortal.

Full control of an S^2 Organ would allow Misato (and possibly the Evangelions, later) to perform feats that appear to be "magic" of the swords and sorcery variety (or, if you prefer, ninjutsu). Shinji and Unit-01 in Rebuild do something similar -- materializing an arm with an AT-field barrier; sending shockwaves and energy blasts at the Angel; floating in the air; etc.

It's possible that differently shaped energy patterns result in different "magical" effects. This all might sound vaguely familiar:

Unrelatedly, Lilith is still situated in the Black Moon under Hakone (which was renamed Tokyo-3 in canon). As Hakone was never renamed here, NERV's headquarters would be located in Fortress City Hakone rather than Tokyo-3.

In canon, the UN gained effective political control over a large majority of its member states in the aftermath of a global resource war that broke out after 2nd Impact. Since the 2nd Impact was a tiny affair here, there was no such war, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Area was never used as a demonstration site for the new N^2 bomb -- the deterrent that gave the UN the political and military power to unite the globe. It's possible that the N^2 bomb was not made public until well after the year 2000. The UN in this reality would be about what it is right now in the real world.

This may mean that NERV does not have the same amount of funding and influence that it did in canon ... Rather than being a UN-backed organization, it may instead be American-backed?

Seeing as how it would be on Japanese soil, at least I assume you are following canon on that, wouldn't be more likely to have American military support, Japanese funding, German sponsorship/more military support, Russian backings (perhaps), plus any other major nations that would happen to be "In The Know" about the events in Antarctica?

I suspect most of the UN Security Council member nations would be in the know about events. I wonder how closely events in this world of Eva would follow the events of our world and how those events might further impact the setting of Eva. An example would the shift in American military thinking from "Grand Battle"-style to dealing with insurgencies and low-concentration combat. Such a mindset shift might not be helpful against Angel, or it might actually reduce casualties.

So it'd be funded by the G8, or rather the G20?

David Alan Abramczyk said:
Say, where is Mount Markham exactly? Which Antarctic Territory does it reside within?
I think it's in New Zealand's territory, if I'm reading these pages correctly.

Interesting; how is the New Zealnd Government going to take to having some sort of mischief like this happening on it's possessions?

Presumably, SEELE would abuse its power to keep the laboratory under their control.

Also, I hadn't gone so far as to think out NERV's backing, but American military with Japanese money might be a good idea ...
