Naruto: Brothers in Arms challenge

#1
Uchiha Sasuke.
Sabaku No Gaara.
Uzumaki Naruto.

Three boys, each plagued by their own personal demons.

The Uchiha Family Massacre, caused by Uchiha Itachi.
The Sand Demon, Shukaku.
The Nine Tailed Fox, Kyuubi no Kitsune

Three boys, so much alike and yet so different at the same time...each walks their own path.

The struggle to kill the only family he has left.
The struggle to hold back the maddening urges of the demon within.
The struggle to finally find where he belongs, to become the Hokage.

Each boy's goal is the same. They seek peace, to finally rest. However, each uses his own ends to achieve his goal.

But what if...things were different? What if the massacre had never happened? What if Shukaku had never been sealed into his container. What if...Uzumaki Naruto had grown up with people who cared? How would it be different?

The difference might not be as positive as you might think.

{{The challenge is this: write a story in which Gaara is not a demon container, but a regular young boy. Itachi did not go nuts and kill his family, so Sasuke has no reason to become an avenger. And Naruto is taken in at a young age...by the legendary Sannin, Orochimaru.

Must end with Naruto/Kin. Other pairings are your choice. Naruto must be loyal to his "father". Orochimaru raised and trained him, cared for him as no one else ever did. Therefore he will not betray his father. The story must focus on all three boys, not just Naruto.}}

I don't mean to offend you, but these ideas really should be done separately, rather than concurrently -- because in my opinion each of them is big enough to easily become a decent story (size wise) on its own provided the writer is competent.

Unfortunately, two of the ideas (the Gaara and Sasuke ones) really don't have a reason to be done at all, in my opinion. If you take away the thing that makes these characters "tick", you are left with almost nothing. We see a little of Sasuke's personality prior to the massacre, and there's not a whole lot to work with. For Gaara, there's nothing at all. Without Shukaku, Gaara is just a Sand nin who happens to be the son of the Fourth Kazekage, and is special for no other reason whatsoever.

Naruto raised by Orochimaru, however, opens up any number of utterly fascinating story possibilities.

As for the Sasuke one, well, I already said one downside to it, and here's the other: pretty much everyone on this board utterly hates Sasuke and would probably have no interest in writing a story where he is the central character. This was really the wrong board to suggest such a story at, but I have no idea what the right one is.

And, leaving aside all else...welcome.

Actually I hate Sasuke too, it's more that I'm actually interested if anyone could possibly make me like the kid a bit, actually. :)

As for the Gaara thing, I look at both of his siblings for a vision of how he would be. Maybe that's just me though. :)

You want to make Sasuke likeable?

Throw away any "development" past the Zabuza arc.

Granted, that's not really making him likeable, but at least he isn't quite so bad. At that point, he's still at the almost-friendly-but-not rival stage, and not...well, Sasuke.

There's already a story of Orochimaru adopting Naruto with the main pairing as Naru/Tayu/Tema/unknown but then again...the writer hasn't updated for some months now. <_<

I'd like to see this done. Who knows? Sasuke might still want to kill Itachi for being so much favored over him but he might also be weaker without avenging his clan on his mind. :p
