And that's a good question, IS the sage dead? I would think he died of old age if nothing else, but we've seen that mortal limitation bypassed in Naruto canon, let alone genkyouien continuity.

Have we suddenly brought in FFX summoning systems without realizing it? Or did he literally control three separate periods of time in human history, and Naruto/Genkyouien canon is merely the last one so the only one we know of.

My thoughts exactly. Daneel created a fantastic setup for a Yuriyo and Naruto relationship, one that fits far better than a Shino x Yuyiro relationship.
