Well here I'm again with another idera. I really should start writing my other ideas first but who cares ^^
The idea concerns two main changes. First is Narutos Age. In the story he should be about 18 when the other rookies are 12. So his birth and the attack of the Kyuubi have to be 6 years before canon or everyone else is just born 7 years later, not that it makes much of a difference. I only have to figure out what will change or have an impact on the story (like Sandaime being even older and not being able to seal Orochimaru's arms, or Kabuto being spied one as he has failed again and again and the Hokage is becoming suspicious.)
Since he is way too old to become a genin with them, he would be a chuunin, because the promotion to chuunin is made through the tournament, I assume jounins have to be promoted by the Hokage and the Council and since they aren't too fond of Naruto, he is stuck as a chuunin for now. Let's say he was in Kakashi's first team (I think that without Sasuke in the team, Kakashi would be able to train all members of the team better).
With one genin less, this would leave a team one member short, so I thought if you had to make a team with only two members, who do you take? The best of course. But such a team would also need more training since they have to work harder than a normal team.
To ensure that this works out the hokage and the council decide that Team Seven shall be: Jounin Sensei Hatake Kakashi, Chuunin Sensei Uzumaki Naruto, Genin Students: Uchiha Sasuke, Haruno Sakura.
So if Naruto wants to become a Jounin he has to train Sakura to A) a level where she will be able to pass the Chuunin Exam and B ) a level where she can take down Uchiha Sasuke if he decides to go rogue. (or rouge, no way will the village let the Uchihas die out because the last offspring decides that he prefers men. ^^)
Point B is another little part of the package. Since Sasuke is the only Uchiha left and obviously deeply disturbed by Itachi's actions, he too could become a nukenin.
To prevent the last Uchiha from defecting as a Genin, they will need someone that can be close to him most of the time. His teammate.
With Kakashi training Sasuke and Naruto training Sakura while sometimes doing D-Class Missions (because of the additional training they will have less missions than other genin teams) it starts, though Sakura won't ever find out what she is training so hard for. Hell I think I will try to create a little rivalry between her and Sasuke after she realises that she could beat him :evil:
Also because Sasuke now has to spend more time with Kakashi, his personality may change a little bit. (Imagine Sasuke buried up to the neck in mud, while Kakashi sits next to him, holding his Icha-Icha Paradise for him to read and tells him to relax and enjoy his book -_- )
From there, well I have some ideas but nothing solid. Though since the Kyuubi attack happened way before Itachi's time as a ninja, the Akatsuki won't know about it being sealed inside Naruto.
Concerning his Jutsus and abilities I'm trying to find a good mix between Kakashi's training, Yondaime's Legacy and maybe a little input from Jiraiya. I will use speed as one of his main attributes (it only makes sense as it also is a good defense against the Sharingan), though the thought of Naruto using raiton jutsus is a nice one^^
Personality wise I'm meshing together canon Naruto and Kakashi's laid-back attitude. Since Kakashi was more of a sensei he had a stronger impact one Naruto. Which could also explain an aptitude for raiton jutsus, because Naruto sees the Chidori/Raikiri in action and decides that it's really cool.
