A young man lay face-up along a beach, staring up at a blood-red sky. A blood-red sea licked at his heels, and all around him was the pounding monotounous noise of nature. He existed without time, his mind blank in that state beyond despair, beyond death, yet still carrying such pain as to escape nirvana. He didn't know long he waited, but the sound of footsteps he'd dreaded finally arrived. He angled his neck up slightly to see a swarthy grinning face under a straw sombrero. The man wore an old, but carefully-maintained tuxedo.

Shinji Ikari did know. He was hoping any one of them would actually be courageous and merciful enough to step out of the woods by the beach and put a bullet in his head. He glanced aside towards a thick clump bushes, twigs and netting in the middle of the sandy beach. He could almost hear a frightened squeak from it, the palm fronds poking out of the bush twitching as if they were tied around somebody's helmet. He sighed. Nope. None of that today.
