Naruto Nightmare's Dawning

"Alright, lets finish this once and for all!" the dark figure growled as he stood overlooking the Hidden Village of Sound. A voice not of mortal man, even one such as him, one demonic in quality of a sort not encountered by any but a few in this world of ninja, one that even demons shuddered in fear of meeting, even in a chance encounter.

Dark and bloodstained armor, an arm twisted into a massive clawed and grotesque appendage, and an aura of malice and destruction. A blade of proportions far greater than he should be able to even lift rather than wield with any proficiency was in an easy grip in his free hand.

An unblinking and yet somehow living eye stared into the abyss from the blade, and evil eye that sent chills through all that saw it.

This creature, this being, this monster, this...Nightmare leaped from his perch, using the blade for an instant to slow his fall while leaving a deep gash in the solid stone of the bluff.

"Souls give me strength!" he roared as the cursed blade cleaved the gates of the village and the guard nins to pieces in a mere instant as memories arose within him.

He'd made it back, the city in ruins, a scattering of Sound corpses mixed among the Leaf and Sand nins that had fallen. The place was in ruins with nothing left.

He'd returned after Jiraiya had fallen, crippled defending him from the Akatsuki, he'd hopes that Tsunade could help, but the toad sennin had died while his last apprentice had vainly searched for something, anything, that could help amidst the rubble.

In the end he'd found a sealed chamber, hidden by the collapsed tower that had contained a scroll, a scroll detailing a legend about a sealed sword that was unstoppable.

Deeper within the vault he'd found the weapon itself. The corrupted legend, the Soul Edge, and when he grasped it, the power and spirit of the blade flowed into him.

Within another battle took place as his seal interlinked with the weapon, and the being known as Inferno devoured the demon within him, destroying the greatest beast in recent memory to become greater still while bonding to the hosts mind, changing them both into a new creature that would be considered an abomination to both human and demon, yet greater than both.

His quest had sent him far and wide, growing more powerful as he hunted the akatsuki with the soul devouring blade, absorbing the power of the tailed beasts as he went, desiring their power to gain his revenge upon the world, the souls of the monsters making him stronger than ever at the cost of most of the remains of his sanity.

Sound nin swarmed at the intruding juggernaut that tore through them with a slow walk while casually slaying them without a sound made other than the occasional grunt.

"Orochimaru," the hulking monstrocity roared amidst the cooling and eviscerated corpses of hundreds of ninja, "Fight me! Let me feast upon your soul!"

He drove the blade into the ground with a scream of anger that unleashed an explosion, devistating the village itself in a dome of dark energy.

"Nice sword," Kisame grunted as he backed away from the lunatic with a living sword while readying his own to attempt to drain the chakra from the former jinchuri, "Mine drains Chakra!"

A backhanded blow from Nightmare bisescted Itachi as the armored form charged and shattered Samehada, "Mine devours souls!"

And thus ended the Akatsuki...

Basically for a one-shot Naruto that has completely lost it in a desire for revenge against just about everyone with a sword of evil that eats souls and partially controlls the wielder going on a rampage against everything. Nothing Sasuke could probably do can stand up to something that absorbed the power of all the tailed beasts and an unknown number of other things as he went on a shinobi continent wide killing spree.

I'm considering having him evolve into Night Terror after absorbing Kabuto and Orochimaru to fight Sasuke at the end which is a terrifying prospect since it can fly and destroy anything and everything in its path.

Night Terror's creation was the result of the mergings of Nightmare, Soul Edge and Soul Calibur aided by Zasalamel's magic. Will Soul Calibur itself make an appearance?

Kabuto attacked first as the other two ninjas froze for a moment at the being that seemed like a living meat grinder.

The medic ninja was grabbed, the almost tenticular claws coiling around his chest and beginning to squeeze while draining his soul, life, and chakra from the body an instant later as the traitor gasped for air, eyes bulging.

A moment later the other two's eyes widened as Kabuto seemed to begin shrinking, but that notion was quickly dispelled in favor of the appearance of the slow dessication of the body.

"You will not find what you seek," Nightmare snarled at the stunned pair, "You have no right to live, it is a sin for you to be alive, you will never suceed at running away from your sins!"

The body of the struggling ninja ceased its movement an instant before it seemed to decompose to ash and slowly fall to the ground between them, the remains of the traitor scattering to the winds as a twisted and corrupt energy slowly flowed over the abominations body as it drew the immense blade up from the ground with a grunt, twirling it between its grotesque hands for a moment before rearing back his head and laughing.

A song of sheer delight and madness, tempered by the cries of millions of souls stolen from saint and sinner alike.

"I will feast upon your souls," it stated simply as the legendary Soul Edge met the fabled Kusanagi in a blast of energy that seemed to sap the very life from the air as a stream of kunai fell to the rubble at their feet, ineffective against the hulking brute of a monster that had armor stronger than steel, a shifting, maddening armor that changed, never twice identical.

A driving kick slammed into the serpentine ninja, sending him slamming through a wall and to the ground, the massive talons tearing gouges in the snake sages chest.

"In my quest for vengance I managed to beat you to your goal," the behemoth stated in a moment of demented calm, eyes shifting to reveal the completed sharingan, taken as the soul of Itachi entered his flesh and blade.

The soul devouring blade shattered the statue the Akatsuki had used in their attempt to control demons leaving eight of the tailed beasts were arrayed against him, freed from their imprisonment by the Akatsuki, all moving to attack the seemingly mad swordsman that dared to laugh at them.

All but three died in the first attack of the monsterous entity that had already absorbed the power of the strongest of their kin.

Shukaku fell next, the tanuki cleaved in twain by the unblinking blade and the beasts soul joined the majority of its brethren in the trap of the ultimate sword.

The remaing two, the Nebi and Sanbi attackd togather, the cat and tortoise creatures hoping for some advantage from the seemingly unstoppable entity of eternal imprisonment without even the ability to speak to its host as some could when sealed by humans.

The monster calmly raised its free clawed hand and unleashed an energy beam that burned a hole through them both in an instant before draining their essences into its waiting maw of souls.

Orochimaru was up and charging striking as Nightmare shattered Sasuke's blade. The Kusanagi shattered, but cracked the helm of the monster before a retaliatory blow severed the rogues legs at the knee and a side kick sent the injured ninja tumbling down the blood stained streets.

Sasuke charged again only to be batted aside as one might a gnat while the roar of summoned snakes brought the armored monstrocities attention back to the sannin.

"Pathetic," the walking abomination snarled as an easy swipe seemed to absorb the half dozen serpents that attacked him.

"Manda," Orochimaru yelled at the only remaining one, "I need your power to beat this monster!"

Nightmare threw his weapon, piercing the head of the snake and biscecting Orochimaru from the ribs to the head, both being reduced to dust by the weapon as its gaze turned upon the remaining foe an instant before an empowered chidori shattered the helm causing the former teammate of Nightmare to stagger back in shock at the twisted abomination now waiting before him.

"Naruto?" he gasped as he activated his cursed seal, bringing it to its maximum level and driving a second chidori into the monsters chest.

"It doesn't matter," the blond creature snarled, "I live on!"

He raised a clawed hand and willed the terrible blade back to his corrupted hand.

"The time is right," he snarled at it, "You shall become part of me!"

Dark energy poured from the weapon, pouring into the demonic entity that seemed to slowly form from him, a pair of shattered wings and other twisted shapes, seeming to no longer even attempt to keep the form of man, but something from ones deepest nightmares.

Dark and vile laughter with a damning feral edge to it resounded across the burning battlefield as the true abomination awakened.

"Even your deepest nightmares have not seen this power Sasuke," the beast within the abyss snarled, "Even your own brothers soul quakes within me in fear at what I have become."

It lunged like lightning grasping the stunned Uchiha, grasping the wings on the dark haired ones back and beginning to twist and crush with the cacophany of shattering bones taken beyond their limit as the traitor screamed in pain and horror as flesh torw free of the body.

"I have become death," it cackled, "The destroyer of worlds!"

The monster dropped the crippled ninja to the ground before him.

Sasuke fell to his knees in defeat as the burning flames of hell bore into him from this demon, this devil that had devoured the demons of the world to form an even more deadly one. It was like a rat staring into the eyes of a cobra as energy began to collect before him.

And then the wave of energy consumed him and the former leaf nin turned traitor died before his former friend and compatriot.

And the damned continued on.

By all means, upload it... but the concept is just so blah.

I mean, Super Powerful Naruto Gone Bad has been so played out that it would definitely take some seriously elite talent to make me want to read it. The fact that Kyuubi got taken out like a bitch, and all the other bijuu (and any other threat in the Narutoverse) fall like dominoes... well, it's believable of a weapon feared by the gods themselves, but still... :no:

It doesn't help that Nightmare!Naruto doesn't say much that isn't a repeat of lines uttered in the games is a massive minus, too.

Really, the Soul Edge/Calibur series lends itself to being so inherently drawn-out and epic that making it a one-shot like this is just no fun. Soul Edge may have had more power when it was whole, but as a thousand shattered pieces, it's much more invasive, and its influence is far more deadly.

Oh, and while I'm at it... There's Soul Edge, and ninja... Where the hell is Taki?

I'm actually working on a more drawn out fic, this is more of the get rid of the kill everyone tendancies out there before it comes out in a way that ruins the course of the longer fic.

As for the quotes, Nightmare doesn't seem to bright to me anyway, even Inferno seems more consumed with the KILL EVERYTHING view than any actual planning.

Siegfried!Nightmare wasn't too bright, no, but I'm fairly certain that was due to the fact that his host body was delusional and insane before he ever laud eyes on Soul Edge. I expect it was much "smarter" back when Cervantes had both halves of the weapon.

Inferno doesn't even speak, and only comes out to test the worth of the person who tries to claim Soul Edge anyway.

Nightmare, in his SCIII incarnation, seemed fairly intelligent, although this was clouded by his hunger for souls. You'd probably be the same if you were starved so badly that you didn't even have a real body.

Recall also that Soul Edge does have the ability to influence people towards its own ends. Bringing its broken pieces together while gathering souls, and it does this on a grand scale, orchestrating events so that it can gain the most power... definitely intelligent.

Nightmare (in his SC3 incarnation) is indeed intelligent. Instead of going out after the strongest soul around (i.e. Siegfried), he's content to rebuild himself quietly, using agents like Tira as pawns in his quest to regain his body (Soul Edge). Even Zasalamel couldn't control Nightmare, it's explicitly stated that he was once the blade's host.

In Nightmare's ending, he becomes Night Terror. Perhaps this was the blade's ultimate goal?

Soul Calibur was once a piece of Soul Edge, which an order of priests (likely Zasalamel's people) spent a long time purifying. It gains in power in response to the power of Soul Edge.

Night Terror is what happens when Soul Edge is once again complete, and at its strongest... and then it reabsorbs Soul Calibur, which is also at its strongest, due to Soul Edge's state.

Yikes.

As a side note, Siegfried is much saner and rational now.

Yep. Gone from " insane soul-hunting dark knight" to "emo would-be paladin".

This is a good story for the most part, but I think it would be better if someone actually at least stood a chance against Nightmare/Naruto.

To be honest when I began reading i was thinking that Naruto would end up like Siegfried; he would go around as Nightmare, only to get defeated and would regain some sanity, and this would pretty much go on, until either he gets killed or he finds soul calibur

ah, in the full fic, I would suggest not killing the kyuubi off. I do want to know if the full fic is going to have any of the SC characters show up.

I am going to add my $.02 on the issue of Nightmare and what not. Nightmare in SC3 is purely Soul Edge; because Soul Edge really isn't possesing anyone, just a suit of armor. Before Siegfried freed himself of Soul Edge, Nightmare was Siegfried under the suggestions of Soul Edge; add into the fact that Siegfried was not sane even before he picked up Soul Edge, and the original Nightmare is really messed up.

For the full one, I was considering giving Naruto a few flashes of a few of the other SC characters, but both this and the full one are set a long time int he future or an alternate dimension that the Soul Edge ended up in and sealed away for centuries. I'm aiming on something opening up an ancient vault that predates Konoha that holds the Soul Edge.

In the full one I'm aiming on Mizuki being the first victim of the blade and Naruto will be able to supress the blade somewhat for the most part, but its presence is always there in the back of his mind and Kyuubi freaking out as its memories include the weapons bearers on their own rampages. I'm even considering having the tailed beasts to have been summoned to take down the previous bearer of the cursed blade.
