I've been trying to remember this title for years, and can't.
I'd even settle for the author's name.
Guy from modern times gets pulled into the distant past when the Norse gods were still around.
One of the gods had been sealed into a block of metal, and the gods had turned it into a sword. The only way to communicate with him was telepathy, but everyone in this time had mental barriers that made such communication difficult, so they needed someone from a time where these barriers no longer existed.
So, the guy gets summoned, and sent on a quest to free the god from the sword. Problem is, Loki and the other forces of Chaos are trying to prevent this.
There's mention of a balance between Chaos and Order, and destroying the balance will trigger Ragnarok.
Guy eventually marries a sorceress.
There's a sequel, though I can't remember the plot off hand.
