Apparently, Mandalay Pictures has acquired the rights to produce a live action version of the series.

So who would play Sousuke?

Zac Efron.

High School Musical baby!

:headbanger:
I caught that announcement the other day off of the Anime News Network feed.

I had thought it might have been a late April fools joke.

If only if that was true.

Unfortunately, when a news story is announced 5 days after April 1st, and when a 'mainstream' news source like The Hollywood Reporter, hope that it's just a silly April Fools joke pretty much dies.

There is good news though.

The movie is in pre-production/talking phase. Most movie ideas die in this phrase. Heck, Zac Efron, while confirming that there were plans for a movie, also said he doesn't think it will make it to the filming stage.

Let's just hope he's correct. <_<

I am still reeling from the monstrosities they called "Dragonball Evolution" and that Streetfighter movie that was release not so long ago to have much hope for this being anything but fail.

Although I liked Efron in "17 Again", I don't think he can play a convincing Sousuke...

Lets hope this dies and it will never happen.

Agreed.

Zac Efron... Eh he's not bad. I mean he hasnt been in a lot of other movies other than High School Musical. He's gonna need a movie that will redefine him other than being the "singing high school kid"

oh lets hope it doesnt get to filming. If it does pray with all your might they dont fuck it up like DBZ

Casting an american for Sousuke?

Fuck. NO.

Get some freakin' asians. Did those crazy people even do any research about why people hated DBE?

This is a japanese show. Set in Japan, the middle east, and China. And some islands in the pacific.

No american movie will capture the essence of the show. Maybe if we did a whole series, you could pass along the feeling, but it still wouldn't be full metal panic.

Plus a 'Girl with mystical powers'? Well technicaly that's a Whispered. But that's like saying that an air craft carrier has big guns. Yes, it's accurate, but that's not the point of the thing. Whispered unlock black technology. Air craft carriers carry air craft.

...

On the other hand, ARM SLAVES!

Now brought to you in advanced CG!

You know... Transformers was a Japanese show as well. I have no idea what kind of plot they'd be thinking of, but Mythril is a world-wide mercenary group, right?

It has just as much of a chance to succeed or flop as anything else not directed by Boll.

Also, I'm not completely familiar with FMP since it's been ages since I saw it, but wasn't Sousuke not really Japanese as he travelled the world as a mercenery since being a child?

Point. I actually liked Transformers.

And you're probably right about the actor thing. I just hope it's not Efron. Sousuke is a cold a fish. He basicaly starts off with zero emotions. And little to no social graces. Part of the fun is that he (tries to) get better. And then, the hijinks ensue.

Ideally, the first half of the movie should probably consist of the 'high school comedy' part of FMP. Then, they can move on to the hijacking incident with Gauron for second half. There's no way they can cover the entire series, but doing this would work out fairly well.

Not that Hollywood has been known to show common sense. Do we have word on who's supposed to be directing?

Slightly late here. :p

Anyways, AFAIK, there is no director attached, or rumored to be attached. This because the original news was, the company bought the rights, and Zac Efron was attached to it.

And I mentioned this before, but Zac Efron told MTV a while ago (like a week after the news came out) that yes, the news it true. BUT, he also believes the movie won't be made. No one has picked up distribution rights for it, and so the movie at the moment has no funding. All it is now, is that the rights are in someone's portfolio. Nothing more.

After thinking it over I have to say on one hand I'm broken hearted they might not be doing it. On the other I'm relieved that they won't get a chance to slaughter something that got me back into anime during a tough time in my life. Hmm I just might have to go out and buy all three seasons and see if a workable script is possible. Sadly I promised my parents not to buy anymore books for the forseeable future since I went and spent 500 bucks on a PS3, something that my parents see as junk. I'm 22 for gods sake!! let me live my life.
