Does anyone know what the style of kimono that Chigusa Amagasaki wears is called?

Heres a picture:

The character Komagata Yumi also wears her kimono in the same style, heres a picture:

You mean the way the bow is tied in front?

According to the wikipedia article on girl from hell, the outfit is similar to those worn by courtesans. The belt sash is tied in front to facilitate its removal (and to make it easier to tie back on).

Or are you referring to another aspect of her clothing? :p

I wouldn't be surprised.

I think Chigusa's bow is tied in the back, but I can't tell from that image. He probably does mean the way its revealing the tops of her breasts, though.

No, I am asking what that style of wearing a kimono is called.

I figured, perhaps wrongly, that there is a specific name for it.

There isn't. It's a courtesans style of clothing. The bow done in the front is a not-so-subtle sexual innuendo in Japanese culture. Erotic private clothing for women often has the bow in front, and many high-class courtesans and prostitutes wear the bow that way as well.

Like runestar mentioned, the bow is done that way to make it easier to open and close the dress.

But as for the garment itself, I don't think there is any particular name for it. It is a courtesans style, as the garment has to be tailored to have the bow in front (you can't just take a kimono and switch the bow around. Well, you can, but it would be really uncomfortable), and the collar is obviously tailored to show off and highlight as much cleavage as possible, but there isn't a name for it (that I'm aware of, at any rate).

Also, modern ones sometimes have a slit running down one or both sides to show off the leg and thigh (a cue taken from western evening gowns), but most 'traditional' ones do not.

Trust me, it's a visual cue for the Japanese audience. Seeing a female character wearing that means they're either very loose, or they're trying to be seductive on purpose (such as a kunoichi, or a woman/girl who is really determined to send a cue to their man of choice (and is bold enough to not care that they're giving other people an eye-full as well)).

Thats what I figured, after taking some time to sreach online with no success.

Thanks everyone.

I wonder if Ayaka would wear something like that to get Negi's attention (perhaps on his birthday), and how her classmates would react to it.

Possibly, but any girl with Asunas bust size up could pull it off.

Yes, but I think Ayaka would be more likely to than Asuna would.

Now, if Konoka did that, reactions would be much stronger, no?

That would be pretty hot, though considering Konoka's age, would it look correct? Heh, she does like to mess with people's heads every now and then, right?

Umm, y'know some of Ayaka's clothing during the festival was more revealing than that. So there probably isn't that much question as to whether she would wear it or not...

The draw of the outfit would probably be the sash, especially if presented as some sort of mockery of a bow-tie. Practically screams of a present just begging to be unwrapped... :p

Hence the 'birthday' thing. I wonder if Haruna could get Nodoka to wear one (without fainting). No, probably not.

@OniGanon: its not so much how revealing it is, its the cultural reference. Its almost the Japanese equivalent of wearing a T-shirt with "Please, Fuck Me." written on it (only much more elegant).
