Overlord Demo is out

Well, about 5 days before the release of the game the demos out there.

It rocks ;) and one a Core Duo PC it runs rather smooth.

Nice graphics, nice sounds and the minions crack me up, those guys are like gremlins on steroids.

Figthing with your minions is easy as hell, though,
fighting with your character takes a little tim to get used to,
because in the beginning the village sheep can outrun you

And thank god that they didn't use the dry voice from the trailer in the demo.
Evil... that voice is not.

Well, that's my first impression... if someone wants to give the demo a try,
just google Overlord and torrent, it's a 1GB file though and have fun
with the shortest tutorial in history followed by a deliciously evil first level ^_^

One of the coolest ever 'you are teh ebil' games was Dungeon Keeper.

Bitchslapping chickens was a great stress relief.

Unfortunately, however enthusiastic I am about the idea (and I have fond memories of an older Codemasters game), there are two reasons that I'm unlikely to buy this or grab the demo.

1) SecuROM. I hate this intrusive piece of shit... particularly it's refusal to run a game if you've run Process Explorer since your last reboot.
2) Hospital Tycoon was the last Codemasters game I bought.
3) SecuROM. it bears repeating that I hate SecuROM.

EDIT: I'll just go back to playing Evil Genius and DK, I guess...

Dungeon Keeper had the raw evil better done, and Evil Genius had the "comically evil" factor through the roof (how often is it that you can stick the enemy superhero into a giant mixer to have him forget everything?!)

(and yes, I /do/ know. I played DK I and II through from A to Z and Evil Genius, too. I love the latter.)

And, yes, SecuROM deserves special notice and a Killing By Fire.

I don't know, I like Overlord better, mainly because you can actually interfere directly if you need to.

Besides roasting enemies by setting the peasants fields on fire is damn funny. :evil2:

and I prefer Overlord because it actually works on my new PC. DK2 worked perfectly on my first 2 pc's, but now, nix, nada, niente, critical error...god I loved that game and now I can't play it anymore.

Would the "backup" of Overlord have SecuROM disabled, you think? Or is it something that is ingrained into the program?

So yeah, I "aquired" the game, my version doesn't have secuROM. It's pretty fun from what I've played so far, my minions are so cute! So eager to please! Couple of things lacking, a map or minimap. You can get lost and it's damn frustrating. More evil actions. From what I've played you don't have many options, then again it has a teen rating. I haven't gotten to the point where you can make armor and weapons yet, but that seems like it's going to be pretty cool.

Making armor and weapons = lots of time in the dungeon for lifeforce.

Tho, it's kind aeasy to upgrade your helmet, since the colors don't matter for it. They all add the same bonus, more minions. Green minions + blues to rez = easy 70 life force per fight against puff beetles.

I've been playing this game a good bit lately... where the hell is the evil?

I mean, sure you can kill people and ransack their houses, but it all comes back like you never touched it, and besides, you can do that in virtually any 'open' game.

Your tower doesn't even have a torture chamber. Much less an evil temple where you can sacrifice people, or a prison where you can stick people and let them starve to death, or... >.<

DK at least had those.

Plus chickens you could backhand and watch explode into a puff of feathers.

Overlord just took an adventure game and called it evil. It's not. Most of your time, early at least, is spent /saving/ people. Wtf...

you can have a torture chamber, but you need to choose Velvet as your mistress to build it, not that you can use it...it's for decoration only :(

Yeah...

Dangit, I want a game that lets you be pure evil... not this half-assed stuff. >.<

But, unfortunately, it'd be too controversial and true evil requires a lot more freedom of script than good, so I'm likely never to get what I want outside of tabletop RPG's.

...

But I still wanna see a catapult that launches babies over the city wall.

...

+1d6 sonic damage from the wailing...

Pull!

*ke-twang!*

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!

*SPLAT!!*

----------

Am I a sick, twisted person for finding that to be hilarious?

Now, while I normally can't stomach the idea of playing an evil character in any RPG, I will admit that there are some very funny things that an evil character can do that a good one wouldn't; ie: beating the shit out of the monkeys and dogs in Jade Empire as a Closed Fist character. These things just tickle me the right way.

Dungeon Keeper is the closest any PC/Console game will ever come to the realm of Evil. You could actually torture humanoids in that game, something I honestly doubt the new, tame wave of games nowadays will allow anytime soon.

Failing that, HAIL THE HORNY!

I always built an entirely seperate mini-dungeon just for the Horny. Lair, chickens, treasure room, training area... all seperate, just for him.

Eventually, he'd still get pissed off and not do anything anymore, but you'd have won the level by then. ^_^

Who's Velvet? Is she an alternative to Rose? I just want the Overlord to backhand her some times, her and her smart mouth. Good lord man, you're an overlord! Don't let your mistress run all over you! Is gold replenishable? I've been waiting to get the ultimate smelter before making equipment, don't want to waste my gold on inferior items. I just got my greens, seem very weak :/ Then again, I haven't done the set the flag thingy, they stealth and apparently get very strong.

Hmmm, I might have to aquire DK as well, is DK2 the best one?

There's only Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper 2, and DK1 has graphics even I can't stand any more (and I regularly play X-Com...).

DKII is awesome, but incredibly hard to get to work on XP.

DK's graphics can be upgraded to use DirectX and that makes them a bit better.

I haven't ever DK2.
