Ranma ½ Ranma's grades at school

Does anyone have any idea exactly WHAT Ranma's grades are from the manga? (Does the anime even mention them?)

There is a lot of fanfiction out there that shows Ranma to be ... less successful at school tests than Akane. I was wondering if it had any real basis? (like from a manga chapter?)

Far as I know, no. The only time I can think that it would have came up, they showed only Akane's grade, which was something like an 86.

The last chapter in volume 27 deals with the principal stealing a bunch of tests, including Ranma's, and threatening to disseminate them by balloon to the whole world. He insinuates that Ranma fared very poorly on the test, but who can say if that's true or if he was just messing with Ranma for laughs. In the end, the tests are scattered by balloon. Akane's score is mentioned explicitly (86 points); Ranma's is not, but he does say something to the effect of "it turned out pretty well."

At a guess Ranma's likely a C to B student.

Eg he gets good enough grades to get by without notice, but isn't an exceptional student.

After all it's Ranma's behaviour that's disruptive <s>Hair-cuttoo strike!</s>, not his academics.

Basically the Jock who isn't a dimwit, but doesn't care to study to get great marks.

YMMV

Hmm... that's informative guys. :)

"it turned out pretty well." -> doesn't necessarily mean a grade C or B student. And while I don't really expect Ranma to be an A+ student, fact of the matter is, he could be in the range B+ to A (depending on your grading system).

I was thinking about an idea for a fanfic and this issue just popped into my head. Reading other stories, the general conses seems to be that Ranma has the academic brains of a jock.

Which I've always doubted.

Thanks folks !

And for some reason something about Wolverine popped into my head. While running him through a combat simulator, it was stated that his charts had him performing the equivalent of a gold medal gymnastics performance while simultaneously beating four computers at chess.

Kind of wonder if Ranma has ever been portrayed in that manner.

I've just always thought of Ranma as sort of like a mild ADHD sufferer. Gets bored or distracted really easily, so he can't pay attention and falls asleep in class. Further, he prefers to stick to his favorite activities (martial arts and eating, mostly), and simply fails to apply himself to academics.

If he could get himself over those problems, he'd probably be fairly intelligent; maybe not a genius, but above average at least.

A number of fics seem to portray Ranma's brain as some kind of tactical super computer or something, but don't think I really have seen a fic that dealt with Ranma getting good grades as anything other than an excuse for people to go 'OH MY GOD' or Genma to yell at Ranma for being girly or something.

I'll differ slightly from the opinions given. I think Ranma is fairly bright, but is merely indifferent to things like school when they're inconvenient to him. <a href='http://ranmarelated.blogspot.com/2007/12/ranma-reading.html' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>Ranma reads</a> a fair amount on his own. I think he has an interest in learning things. Just maybe not what school wants to teach him all the time.

As I recall, Ranma says something along the lines of "Better than I expected" while everyone else looks at him, horrified. His grade was terrible - he just didn't care.

I don't remember that at all.

What I remember is Ranma and Genma watching the broadcast, Ranma saying that it wasn't as bad as he feared and Genma telling him to show some shame, which could mean anything really.

I imagine Ranma's grades aren't too hot for the simple reason that they don't seem to be a priority to him.

I mean yeah, he wants to be better than everyone else all the time at everything, but if it's a choice between studying for algebra tests and practicing punches, he's gonna practice his punches. Because he's not committed to school, I don't think he could do too much better than average.

I view Ranma as an average to somewhat above average student, with the potential to be better than that, but he doesn't exercise that potential partly because school is boring and partly because, with his skill-set, he really has no pressing need to be there. He could eke out a living in a bunch of ways that don't involve the rigid conformity of standardized education.

Nope.

Akane doesn't think she did very well while Ranma thought he did. Genma then chastised Ranma for getting a big head. (The ranmascan translation is off) Remember that Ranma only went after the tests because he thought it might make him look like an idiot in front of the entire school.

It seems to be reasonably implied from ending that Ranma got a good grade and it did not make him look like an idiot.

Ranma doesn't get bored or distracted that easily. He can continuously do boring repetitive exercises i.e. his training for hours on end like during the martial arts dining story arc. As for sleeping in class that is not something Ranma commonly does at least in the manga. Akane has in fact slept in class more often than he did. He is shown to eat during class fairly often though.

That page matches a text translation I have. Akane's and Genma's comments are word-for-word, the rest is near it, just a bit different phrasing.

The official translation definitely implies that Ranma's grade was bad. Ranma says that he thought he did worse than he actually did, and Genma tells him to "be a man and show some shame."

This is ViZ we're talking about, though, so take it for what it's worth.

I have the page in raw Japanese if anyone wants to see it. It's the last content page of volume 27.

Post it here, please. The above-linked page is based on the Chinese version, and I don't trust the way Viz translated stuff back then.

Translation from Fallacy
Ranma : ?????????
"Actually I did pretty good"
Genma : ????????????
"is that a score that you aren't ashamed of announcing to the whole world"

Not sure where my thing about Genma earlier came from. But when is he ever happy about what Ranma does? MOTIVATE MOTIVATE MOTIVATE! It actually being a bad grade would completely contradict Ranma's earlier freakout at the idea that he got a bad grade.

OK, I have to ask:

When the TV reporter is saying their names, why is she speaking their given names first, and why are they written in Katakana?

At a guess, that may be to imply the broadcast is foreign (to Japan).

It does say CMN in the corner of the screen. Sounds like a thinly-veiled knockoff of that network in Atlanta.

International news broadcasts high school students' grades? Only in Takahashi's work.

 Ha,Ha !! I didn't really think about it being a ripoff of the international edtion of CNN until I read your post.

I kinda thought that it would be some Japanese-only broadcast.
