Recettear: Bad End

I was looking through FF.net, and found that there was a severe lack of Recettear fics. It's somewhat understandable, considering the game has only recently come out in the US (great translation). Also, it's a game about an item shop. How much can you make a story based on a game about capitalism interesting without it being an infodump?

Well, there is a lot of plot other than just the item shop. There are memorable interactions with the cast (many of which are hilarious), and many loveable characters. The game also includes fun multi-level dungeon questing, which helps make the player not get bored with doing the same shop stuff over and over (even if it is fun to haggle).

Anyway, while any fanfic about Recettear would be nice, I would like to see one based on a Bad End in the game. One where Recette fails to meet one of the payments, gets her house repossessed, and has to live in a cardboard box like the game over screen shows.

This can be during any week you want it to. From the first, where Recette's just starting out and learning the ropes, to near the ending after she gets to know a lot more people.

The way I see it, this can be written two ways. The first is a drama and/or angst fix, where Recette slides deeper and deeper into depression while just trying to survive.

The second would also be a drama-type fic, but there would be a hope spot, with some of the townspeople taking pity on her, and maybe some of the main cast willing to help Recette out and get her back on her feet.



Where it goes from here is up to you.

Hm. You could actually push this down multiple routes. The one that came to me second (first was the lemon route, which is just how my mind works) was a Griff route, so to speak. I haven't completed his storyline yet, but as far as I could tell, it could work like this.

Tear is sad, but tries to put it behind her and cover it up in her typical fashion. This appears to Recette as Tear hating her or having been heartless from the beginning. After Recette's simmered a bit, Griff shows up... maybe to taunt her, maybe to sympathize. Or both. He's very surprised when she asks him to show her why. How people can be so cruel.

"Even if I have to become a Demon to understand, I have to know!"


I have always been fond of evil routes. Haven't beaten Griff's stage yet, so I don't know how this would turn out.

True. But the fact that even three years after Recettear has come out (in Japan), there is no Rule 34 fanart says something.

It's a sort of "Even Evil Has Standards" thing. Like there's next to no Rule 34 fanart of Yotsuba.

My bad. Never heard an official age. Not that that would stop my brain from going the lemon route first, but that's more of a personal issue

Would probably be yuri anyway, since most of the guys Recette knows have a hard time affording food for themselves. All things considered, there'd be some time before that happened anyway, so the age question might be a little less of a problem.

Look, I'm done arguing the point now, so I'll just say one more thing.

Even 4chan won't Rule 34 Yotusba, and flames those who do it.

If 4chan itself condemns something, it's probably wrong.

Getting away from the lemon prospects, I feel there could be a story behind one of the bad ends.

The way I see it, it's far more likely to occur mid-game, where the amounts aren't negligible, but not monstrous either.

And while she might seem heartless when it comes to the debt, Tear doesn't seem like the sort to simply walk away and leave Recette to live in a box.

Chances are, she'd finagle Recette's various companions into either buying enough to keep the store open, talking the Guild Master into becoming the debt owner, or at the very least, get one of the various companions to let Recette live with them.

Cherme, surprisingly, seems the most likely (maybe because she's my favorite character and I'm currently keeping the store's decor dark to attract her) and probably the best choice to help out. The lady thief would help Recette out in exchange for restarting the Recettear as a place she could hawk her wares.

Plus, in a way, I almost get the feeling that Charme either has and/or wants a little sister, which is a role Recette fills.

Also the possibility of a lemon is in there, even if it's not necessarily including Recette. Remember, the support cast DOES interact with each other from time to time. (As for Recette, remember fantasy realms probably have a lower age of consent.)

Thats always confused me. I always though that someone who was innocent didn't hate people, wasnt guilty of any crimes, and was kind and caring.

I just don't get the whole mentality that Sex!BADEVIL so if you have sex at Age X and you were innocent before you are now SULLIED AND NO LONGER AN INNOCENT AND KIND PERSON.

Just seems really strange.

Sex with children is bad because A: it often hurts them. B: they do not understand the consequences of having sex with someone. C: Its usually Rape because of A and B.

If a random 13-16 year old Fictional character enjoys sex, understands its consequences and sex itself, and is entirely consenting, are they somehow not an innocent?

Regardless of however kind and lovable and generally a wonderful person they are?

EXACTLY. I just don't see Recette consenting. Hell, with her personality she probably doesn't even know what sex IS, even when she gets older. I can see her with Goku's "marriage is some sort of food" mentality.

Your A, B and C examples are a perfect definition of what Recette's mindset most likely is.

Er...wha? I'm not saying sex is BADEVIL at all. It just isn't something Recette would do. I mean, it's just her personality. Not to mention, she's never shown a hint of romantic interest in-game. And she is innocent. I don't remember her doing any crimes (unless you count the player exploiting the townspeople for all they're worth), and she cares about everyone except her father (who deserves it; he left her with a 100K+pix debt, the prick.)

Back to the original topic, though, is anyone willing to write a story? The only one I found was on FF.net, was rather short and was abandoned.

As for the adventurer if you go to the bar Charme is disapoitned that tear came as well because she would not let Charme take Recette home with her. That's all it says but the hints are there.
