Sometimes I wonder if humanity changes, or just our willingness to ignore certain aspects of it.
It was easy when facing Voldemort to blame the majority of the ills of the world on him.
Ignore the truth that it was humanity that made him who he was, enabled who he became.
When facing an enemy to the death, do we gain that savagery to survive at all costs, or is it just awakened?
To kill an enemy to save a stranger. To kill a stranger to save a friend. To kill a friend to save family. To kill yourself to save family and kill your family to save yourself.
Some wont kill their friends to save a family member, but realistically any friend that close is family in all but blood.
What if you make it 100 enemies to kill a stranger? 25 strangers to save a friend? 2 friends to save family? 5 family to save a friend?
These number games, is one reason we desensitize the importance of numbers when it comes to death. A thousand dead in an earth quake in a far off country affecting us less than 17 dead in a movie theater.
Is the life of 17 countrymen worth more than a thousand?
Their is undoubtedly this tie, this us vs them, this willingness and ease to create groups based on similarities and value those over others.
It is easy to say "I would never die in an earthquake in the far east" but much harder to say "I will not die by getting shot by a random stranger in a movie theater"
It is group preservation, self preservation, at work.
Naturally this extends to racial equality and pride. I want my race to succeed, so I as a member of it will succeed or be more likely to succeed due to the groups success.
It is for this reason that racism will always exist. Gingerism as well.
In time the races might fully blend, but will we not forge new mental groupings? A new Us vs Them?
Purebloods vs Muggleborn, Magic vs Nonmagic. These battles are intrinsic as long as a member of either group exists.
It was one of Hermione's movies that gave me an idea. An idea... to unite everyone.
