Screw this sh*t

We've all seen stories where the normal guy/girl character is thrust into a new and strange environment/situation/etc and his only option, it seems, is to somehow deal with things and come out of it alive.

Often, the character is too idealistic to just ignore things. In other cases, they need to struggle just to survive.

This is pretty formulaic, isn't it?

It's been done to death.

The 'freaky school', the 'crazy dorm', 'ridiculously powerful student council' and so on and so forth.

But what if they did just ignore things? What if they were cynical and self-absorbed enough, or just plain disinterested enough to not care about any kind of bigger picture. And had just enough ability/guts/power to be able to try and back their decision up? What if they, upon being faced with one of the usual ridiculous situations, they simply went:

'Screw this shit, I'm going home.'

Pick any such series/show/comic/whatever you want to. Personal suggestions would include Utena, Yakuza Girl, Ikki Tousen, X/1999, but whatever manga or anime or book or game you find that you feel could benefit from such treatment is more than fine.

It would be funny to do it with Ikkitousen. Who would you pick? Hakufu, who's only in it for the fights? That would especially be a laugh. Or Koukin, who doesn't seem to like fighting all that much but will do it if protecting Hakufu is in the balance.

Kurosaki Ichigo would have the best chance of saying "Screw this shit!" after he kills the first Hollow. Or maybe when Byakuya cuts Rukia's powers out of him. That latter would be *really* interesting since his friends are learning about their powers at that point; would they try to convince him that quitting is the wrong thing to do?

I like this challenge.

I could also picture Souskae Sagara from Full Metal Panic doing sometihng like this if it occured to him and Kaname... Or him and Tessa.

Who cares about this stuff, I have direct orders and am on a mission.

It is not beyond realm of possibility... remember when Mardukas gave him orders regarding the captain visiting... he even ignored his own health in attempting to meet his demands.

Dubious whether the cure would work, but not a bad idea generally.

There have been a couple of Harry Potter fics on this. One where he sensibly tells Dumbledore that he wants no part of a death trap like Hogwarts and another cross with Zero no Tsukaima where Harry rather sensibly responds to Louise trying to punish him by pushing her out of a high window and becoming a student at the school himself.

Tsukune, from Rosario to Vampire; after Moka bites him or somesuch. As far as I know, there's a fic where a Headmaster-raised Tsukune is bitten and is rather displeased about it.

@Watashiwa: Well, the world would still be there, for one thing, since the plot endgame is pretty much a Nice Job Breaking It Hero.

@drakensis: Yes, there've been a few, but generally short and far in-between. Also ... see below ...

@Lord of Bones: Links or it didn't happen, LB.

The first's on ff.net. Title is 'No Thank You'.

The second, I think was on rorsch's yahoo group. it's been a while though, so I could be wrong. Neither was very long.
