Ranma ½ searching for Ranma + Nabiki fanfics

#1
Hello guys,

Any suggestions for good stories that revolve around Ranma + Nabiki? For better or worse, I can't find anything good. By 'good' I mean a story which does NOT end up in a three-some, and preferably WITHOUT the Akane-bashing.

I mean, what is up with that anyway? I lost count of the stories I read involving R+N, but darn it, in just about 95% of them, Shampoo joins up with the pair in SOME idiotic manner and that turns me off.

Are ALL R+N authors like this? Please tell me it isn't so!!

And the Akane-bashing is just ... well, I've had it with that! I can understand some people who are frustrated with a Ranma+Akane pairing (I prefer them), but if you want to go with one of the other sisters, why does that mean Akane gets beaten up?

There is a fic search thread not five posts down, going there might be better.

I recommend Falling to Earth by Sinom Bre. No Akane-bashing, but sadly is is a deadfic that ends before things get serious.

Oh yeah, THIS was a good one !! And unfortunately, the ONLY decent one I liked with a R+N pairing. A real pity that it stops just before things get spicy, but the author has a 'small' preview somewhere on his/her site (think Rakhal hosts it)

cgobyd,
I didn't notice that earlier - thanks for the tip! I'll check it out.

Thanks for those links guys! First I've heard of them. Though, with "First I Giveth" I think I read the first chapter and for reason just stopped after that.

Hmm... must have been in one of my Ranma+Akane moods back then. Oh well, thanks for the reminder!

Nabiki wakes up one day, and everything is normal... Too normal... Ranma is missing, but she's the only one who remembers him, so she sets out to find him... 'You're not getting away that easily' :: Epilogue Uploaded. Epic Complete!

And a fair bit of coincidence. Ranma and Nabiki recall events that led them to their controversial, unlikely and divisive bond that is not quite fluffy, but a wild clash of wills.

I freely admit that FIG isn't the strongest at the beginning, I was just goofing around with writing the story when I started and it really started spiraling out of control after a while. It sits at 21 chapters and I go, wow, really? For some reason, I keep thinking there isn't much done to it.

Any chance of continuing it? I quite liked that one, even liked your Kodachi in it.

The reason it takes so long between chapter is that I hit a dry spell that lasts for a while, followed by a spurt or two, before tapering off. And then I'll get a sudden streak and blink at everything needing to be accomplished for the chapter to be done, being there. And then back to the dry spell.

Part of the current slow down is that I have hit a crazy spell of creativity for Reprint, which for me is unprecedented on anything. The other part is just waiting for the muse, in between her brains being scrambled, to wake up to inspiring it.

And my self-imposed finish line is what, nine chapters away? Yeah, I should try to focus more on it at some point in the future.

Full disclosure, I really want to get it done, just to say I finished it. From a molehill to a mountain, what a strange trip.

If a miracle occurs, 22 should be done before I know it.

Just wanted to say that I've finished reading FIG. It's an interesting story, I'll give you that, BUT, by around chapters 18 - 21, I can feel a disconnect of sorts. Like the story is pushing to a direction very, VERY different from what the first 8 chapters indicated. I left a review on FF.NET and I'll make an additional note here.

In FIG, its just unbelievable that Akane is STILL in the running for Ranma. She's acting like a ditz of sorts and thats a bit too OOC for me. Or just make her dump him! That would be a little better. And Ranma still having feelings for her? When I read the part about the neko-ken, with him jumping between the 2 of them, I couldn't believe it!

If more chapters come, I'll still keep reading it, but ... well, I'm a bit disappointed with the plot right now. Also - I was wrong about one thing - the story DID get better, the more I read it.

"Out of sight, out of mind" is a brilliant story! Reminds me of a movie. It's a great plot by itself and has a WONDERFUL epilogue. The only downside is that the author decided to make a sequel. A similar case with "The Jungle Book 2". The original was great, but reading the sequel is just disappointing.

"Handed on a Silver Platter" is a nice story. The ending does seem a bit ... tactful. I don't mind the Akane presented here. It's the other 2 sisters and Ranma that I find different. Reading that story, I come away with the impression that the author started off with a Ranma+Akane pairing in the beginning and towards the end, decided to go with Nabiki. In fact, I think something similar was mentioned in the author's notes. A decent read this one, but feels a bit disconnected in the middle. But still a decent read.

"Exact Change" is just BRILLIANT !!! As mentioned before, quite possibly one of the best R+N pairing stories around. I do have one complaint - the story takes place a little AFTER the manga. By that point, Akane has grown to love Ranma and knows him better than he knows himself. To convert that Akane to a 5-year old, is just ... disappointing. On the good side, it lasts for hardly 3 or 5 paragraphs, so I can put up with it. Time-line issues aside, its a brilliant story and one that has me a bit whimsical to start my own fanfiction based on it (don't expect anything).

Thanks again folks for all your wonderful suggestions!! :)

I can admit that I'm playing up Akane's naivete a little too much, but I figure if she wasn't short sighted and conceited about something, it might just run off the rails.

And the whole neko-ken thing was pretty dumb, but it was the idea that made sense because I don't want Akane to always act the bitch, because a lot of Ranma/Nabiki match-ups basically turn her into the villain.

I think introducing Ukyo really just derailed everything.

Edit: Checking the review, I feel I should point out that Soun let Ranma off the hook for Akane around chapter 2, and Nabiki even points it out in the big confrontation between the two in, 18 was it? Akane is behaving more in line with the brattier side of herself: She doesn't want to admit what her feelings are, but she wants him to herself. She considers that the engagement is still hers because she's incredibly possessive.

And honestly, the date basically bombed because Akane is entirely in love with the idea of being in love and she doesn't care about Ranma. If I could get my muse under me, I could get around to showing that at some point.

Edit 2: Yeah, Ranma is probably being far too courteous to Akane right now, but since there is only 9 chapters left, he'll probably finally slam the door shut on her in 23 or 24. (Oh em gee, spoilars.)

And Shampoo was written off entirely because there is no good solution to the Amazon laws that aren't massive reaches up my personal hind quarters. Suffice to say, instead of having that in the background too, I just wrapped it up and threw it off the pier.

I love a good bit of drama, but since she had zero chance of winning, I just felt it better to pull her from the race before she hurt herself. And Nabiki, more Nabiki, but yeah.

*cough.* What?

The sentence is poorly worded, I was more joking I shanked the Shampoo plot train to protect Nabiki more than any actual care for Shampoo.

Hmm... Kodachi. You know, this story could use more of her.

Nothing new in several years, but those three fics are there.

If I must read this pairing, I would like to see a story where Nabiki is not utterly whitewashed to hell. A story where she remains a greedy, selfish, vindictive bitch; and is quite proud of that fact.

And that's where breadwinner!Nabiki came from. Just about the only way to get Ranma to like Nabiki is to change her character. Even Akane dislikes that part of her.

Seriously. Nabiki's shown to do nothing but tease and occasionally blackmail Ranma. HOW can you honestly make him like her as she is.

I don't know. Maybe it's one-sided on either side. Maybe it's mutual but never acknowledged.

I just hate the fanon that surrounds her. It's crap, has always been crap, and always will be crap. Crap piled upon crap piled upon crap, until all there is is a mountain of fanon so large that it becomes a Mighty Shit Godzilla. I think it's already there.

Everybody in this series suffers from this. As an experiment, I'd love to see someone come in with no knowledge of the series, make sure the only thing he reads is fanfiction, have him read a wide spectrum of stories for maybe a year(I mean all of it. WAFF, character bashing, comedy, tragedy, all pairings under the sun, the whole damn spectrum) and then expose him or her to the anime or the manga.

It would be interesting to see their "before canon" and "after canon" thoughts on the main characters.

But yeah, Nabiki gets a lot of fanon stuck to her. She's either so devious the devil himself would sell his soul to her, or a misunderstood angel. She's neither. There are no camera and bugs all over the Tendo's hotwired a series of monitors in her room. She does things for the lulz, if not for money. She'd rather spend her father's money than her own any day of the week. And here's a shocker for those of you that haven't read the manga in a while. At least one time, Ranma managed to haggle down the price she was asking.

That happened to me with Nanoha... I read crossover fanfiction with it before seeing it.

Boy was I surprised... The TSAB is not near as good and clean minded as shown in fan fiction... All the corruption of TSAB upper ranks and the government and the society... the dirty laundry....

I like it more now.
