First off, I'm starting with the idea that the Cylons never had the capacity to defeat the Colonies in a straight fight (Thus the virus), and the infiltration began as a simple intel thing rather than anything more elaborate.

Secondly, the Cylon plan for Genocide came from the stealthstar incident, namely that they believed the Colonies were planning something.

Then ditch the retcons of the final five and a lot of the final seasons stuff.

Now, what happens if in the months before Richard Adar's election to president, his rival and incumbant's intel agency discovered one of the skinjobs and started extracting intel on the state of the Cylons.

They get almost everything the Cylons have at that point from an intel basis, and as a way to get more votes over Adar, the President invades Cylon space to "recover" their lost property.

Cue a handful of Cylons escaping the Colonial invasion of their space while their secrets end up known to their enemies. Hell, a lot of the riots that developed suddenly go away from the slave labor influx from the missions as steps are made to prevent another rebellion.

Imagine if an Earth a bit ahead of ours finds the fleeing Cylons then, what do you think would be the results of that?
