Evangelion Shinji the Hillbilly

Here's a "Shinji is raised by..." that I bet no one has thought of before.

Through a series of ridiculous accidents, Shinji is lost right after Gendo gets rid of him. A few weeks before the the 3rd angel attacks, Shinji is finally found, only he'd prefer if ya'll would call him Ike. Ike Daniels from the heart of the Appalachian mountains. Regional Wrasslin' champ at 119 lbs division and all-round hardcore hillbilly.

Yes, Shinji Ikari the Banjo and fiddle playin', tobacco spitten, WWF nutcase fan. Not that well educated, but naturally sharp, and, here's the key point, well grounded by good ole' Southern common sense. Also living in the mountains with the Daniels and all their assorted kin and friends, made him one of the meanest spitfires ya'll have ever seen.

Can be used for crack or serious. though crack for this would be awesome. Wonder what he would make of Misato's place and pet, meeting Asuka would be a riot.

You might have forgotten him being a football fanatic.

Otherwise, I kind-of like this idea. Possibly because I know plenty of people in real life who fit your description.

For extra crack, include Volgon!Rei and an Asuka who is somehow aware that things are not going according to canon.

Asuka: "What are those... THINGS?!?!"

HB!Shinji: "Tain't nothing but sum good'ald banjos."

Asuka: "B-b-but your suppose to play the cello... and WHY DOES REI HAVE ONE?!?!"

Rei: "...How else are we going to play this song?"

*Shinji begins his half of the Ballad of the Dueling Banjos.*

Asuka: "...Ggaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh"

*Asuka runs out screaming as Rei begins her half.*

Might be a little more solid if you went with him being raised by known characters. Who?

A man named Jed. Poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed.

Screw with the timeline a little, Jed and his family were well above the waterline and 2I didn't hardly affect them, since they make or catch most of their goods anyway. One day a little boy appears, lost, and they take him in like good folks ought to. Nobody around the mountain lost him, and he speaks some strange language... he's just proficient enough with English to get by. Jethro recognizes Japanese and claims to speak a few words, I'm sure you know how that goes.

So Shinji settles in, gets over most of his shyness between the efforts of Granny and Ellie May, quickly learns the language, wrestling, and all sorts of other things from the family, who eventually decide that whoever's missing him'll eventually come lookin'. About a year before Shinji gets the letter from Ikari the elder, Jed finds the oil deposit. They move to New Beverly Hills (the old one is underwater) and the canon hijinx ensue with the addition of Shinji. After a few of those, fast-forward to Evangelion and Hillbilly Shinji.

Alternately to the Banjo, give him a fiddle. Devil Went Down to Georgia would be deliciously appropriate here. Him and Rei doing Dueling Banjos would be hilarious though.

I would lulz at him reacting to Asuka's attacks on reflex and putting her down. Not to mention doing a Nutcracker on Sachiel.

Not a bad Idea, but how the Heck would Shinji have ended up there?

The story I had was, Shinji gets on the wrong plane, where instead of going to his guardians somewhere in Japan, he ends up on a plane to the States. In comes Former Army Corporal Tom Daniels, mid 20s, just left the army and had been on near constant active duty since 2nd impact in the Asian side of the Pacific and now heading for home. Cue finding little Shinji crying his eyes out in the American Airport. He speaks Japanese a bit and Shinji knows a little English. Tom tries to find the kid's parents and when absolutely nothing can be found, and hearing what Shinji said, that momma was gone and pappa made him go away, an impulsive Tom, decides to take him back home with him to Tennessee with him, and the rest of the Family.

Due to language confusion, everyone starts calling him Ike. From there he becomes your average back woods boy, He's smart but lets just say that the local schools are not all that well funded and he doesn't really put that much effort into school, he wants to join the army like uncle Tommy and half of the male members of the Daniels family have.

Jump to before the 3rd angel attack, Gendo can't find anyone to activate Unit 01, and is desperate enough to use the MAGI to track his son. They finally track down him through him being a State Champion in wrestling, ... in Tennessee.

Shinji reluctantly agrees to go to Japan due to a U.N. order and privately to confront Gendo and hopefully knock his teeth out.

This Shinji is going to be much different from the Shinji we've known, first off a high meat and calorie diet will make him much bigger than the Average Japanese at his age, a bit taller than Toji Suzahara and much stronger, Second, he will finally be out of those damn black slack and white shirt he NEVER seems to take off. The image I have of him would be jeans, boots, a camo-baseball cap with a Confederate battle flag on the front above the bill, and wearing a Tennessee Volunteers Jersey. Also he won't be as pale, his hair is likely to be different, he carry himself different so will seem even bigger than before.

What do you think? Could that work?

Physically, he doesn't need to be bigger. It's really all in how you carry yourself. I know two retired USMC guys and neither of them are tall. However, they both carry themselves with pride and that makes them much more imposing.

Anyway, cool idea. I'd read it.

Here's a possible quirk of Ike, his hat, it was the first thing that Tom gave him when they were on the way back home from the Airport and they happened to stop by a convenience store and he bought Ike a baseball cap, camo colored and had the Confederate battle flag on it. It was huge on his little head but he refused to take the thing off and he's still protective of it.

How protective, well in sixth grade in a school yard fight a bully took his hat threw it to the ground and stomped on it. If a Jaegermonster from the Girl Genius verse had seen the reaction, they would have made him an honorary brother on the spot.

While "Ike" is a decent abbreviation for "Ikari," I don't think your stereotypical Southern Hillbillies would give a kid a nickname like that due to some lingering dislike from the forced beginnings of Integration in the schools which happened only because of "Ike" Eisenhower sending in federal troops to make Southern schools integrate.

For Shinji to get nickname like "Ike," it would require a decent explanation for how it came about.

Food for thought.

I looked at this thread when I was sober, and I looked at this thread after several drinks. There are no lulz to be had here.

Gafgar, I know where you're coming from on that point, but I know some vehement Ike-haters in Alabama. It kinda made discussions about World War Two in a history class in college quite awkward for me.

I was just trying to be helpful for anyone who decides to use this idea for a story.

Okay maybe not Ike, I was trying to get a name from the Ikari part of his name, any Ideas for a better one then?

What's the Problem with Alabama? I live in Georgia about two counties away from the State border from there.
It's probably similar to how Georgians (and Atlantians (sp?)) feel about Gen. William T. Sherman after his March to the Sea during the War Between the States (US Civil War). Even more so for the Alabamians, since there are probably people still around from when the troubles in the 1950s took place. <_<

I have nothing against "Ike" as a nickname for Shinji, but that kind of nickname requires some justification as to how Shinji received.

To Greydon: They remember, oh boy do they remember. It's not everyday that you have to bring in an old history book from back home to prove that Eisenhower was NOT a traitor to country.

To Takerial: Perhaps. Perhaps not. It all depends on your perspective. I think I see a good deal of potential which I would use, except for how most of my friends who could proofread for me are from Southern states.

I am willing to help people with ideas for this concept though!

There's just no curing Alabaman - the only thing worse is if he'd been born and raised in California!

How about this for a fun fact - the personal escort unit for Sherman during his infamous march through Georgia and the Carolinas was the 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment, a unit formed of Alabamians and other Southerners that stayed loyal to and fought for the Federal government after their home states seceded from the Union. Apparently some people in Alabama aren't too proud of that part of their history. <_<
