to de-stress, here's something that's been rambling about my mind ever since my second DDS run-through.

---
"No."

Under the falling rain and cloudy skies of the Junkyard.

"No!"

Betrayal.

"Jinana! Snap out of it, please!"

It all feels ... familiar?

Like a shadow in his mind, trying to tell him something, whispering in his ear ever since that first chaotic battle, where Varna raged and feasted on the ruin of their foes.

'Am I going insane?'

Argilla's agitation, Heat's battle lust ... he's been here before, but when?

How?

Just through the Citadel, a sneak attack to take out the leader of a rival Tribe while their allies feinted a frontal assault. He and his comrades tore through the Solids' stronghold with its defenses focused on the outside, and were led _straight_ into an ambush ....

... all the while, instincts he didn't know he had, and knew he _shouldn't_ have despite not having known what 'instinct' was prior to when his Other Self had awakened, begged to be used.

He'd seen Heat struggle, often coming through an encounter by sheer bloody minded determination and guts, and Argilla pressing forward on hope and faith ...

... whilst he himself seemed to merely stand on the sidelines and watch as his body crackled and blazed trails of icy destruction.

It was so _obvious_.

As if he'd done it before, somehow.

"We ... _I_ don't want to fight you! You're stronger than this!"

Argilla's shout, and a flare of chakra, brought him back into the present.

For an instant that seemed to stretch into eternity, the world froze.

'Don't worry. Just follow along. Nothing needs to change.'

They'd been betrayed. The Embryon Tribe had gone to the Maribel with an offer of alliance, something that just wasn't _done_, and both Tribes had then come up with this plan to destroy the Solids.

A testament to change.

Proof that they needn't just submerge themselves into mindless slaughter, pure destruction, that state which seemed oh so appealing to the part of his mind that _wasn't_ pure logic.

But just for a bit, he'd thought he could feel it. The concept had been comforting.

Argilla, on the other hand ... he'd seen her embrace it like nothing before.

And now, they were betrayed. Jinana, the leader of the Maribel, tricked and forced to turn into the mindless beast of her Other Self's base urges ...

"Forget it, it's no use! So fight if you don't want to die," Heat snarled, his body shifting, his spirit twisting, and his Other Self - the being of destruction and fire that called itself Agni - stood in his place.

"But ..."

What was this? This tightness in his chest when Argilla's face twisted into a grimace of pain and conflicting emotion?

'My comrade ... friend? Is suffering?'

Just follow along. Nothing needs to change.

"No."

"Serph?" Argilla asked. In front of them, Jinana's own transformation ran its course ...

"Damnit, Serph! We don't have time for this! It's us or her!" Agni's two mouths roared, the claws flexing from his knuckles.

'Suffering. Strife ... I don't _like_ how they make me feel.'

"Detain her," he ordered, the resolve in his voice making Agni's two heads snap in his direction. "Not long."

Mantras.

Tens of them.

More.

Flooding his mind, as the whispers became a full out roar that tore his consciousness along.

"She's just hungry," Serph's chakra twisted, crackled, shattered and reformed into Varna. "And there's a big, fat chunk of meat a ways behind us."

Argilla's eyes widen, then thin into slits as she realizes, then nods to herself, letting her own transformation take its course.

"I'm going to go _get it_!"

Follow along? Stand aside? Don't worry?

'Like hell!'

Varna tore off into the night, like a comet, leaving frost covered ground, icy air, and frozen raindrops in his wake while Agni and Prithivi prepared to hold off Jinana's Other Self ...

... Mick the Slug, leader of the Solids, was about to have a very, very bad day.

As well as a very short one.

I've always liked Jinana, despite the short end of the stick she's been given in the game ... or maybe I just liked to watch her butt. Ah, well.

Me likes.

Then again, I don't see much DDS fiction (or SMT fiction at all). While the premise of this isn't exactly original, it does make some sense in the scheme of things in it (especially the play with newgame+ and such.).

The possibilities are good, but some things might not be subject to change (like Lupa, since I doubt that Seraph could make him eat even if he had foreknowledge) no matter how hard he tries. :/

Mm. Not Seraph. Serph. Haven't gone through DDS2 yet. Read up on some spoilers, don't exactly like the Seraph concept.

Maybe this is just a system backlash (explanation - Cyber Shaman does Weird Shit ^_^) or maybe something went awry at the end ...

... besides, I actually like Serph as a character enough to want him to be himself, even if he's just an 'image', throughout and past the end. So sue me, 'defiance of divine providence/destiny' is going to feature in pretty much anything I write, I think.

If I have more of this thing up, it's going to place a lot of focus on Serph, the individual, and his evolution from emotionless to ... well, something else.

Besides, I like the idea of a Serph/Argilla/Jinana sandwitch. The bit after the ship episode in DDS really had gravitas and I've been a huge Argilla fan from the get-go. Not just because she's hot, either.

Also, I figured that if I wanted to see a DDS fic that _wasn't_ crappy yaoi or high-school, or high-school yaoi for that matter, I'd have to write it myself. Never said it was going to be original ^_^.

And Serph is just cool. Varna as well. Like you've probably seen, my version had him develop a heavy ice focus, with a smattering of Phys and Hunt Mantras. Almighty is ... meh. Don't like it. Didn't do shit against the final boss where using my usual tactic had it down so quickly I was going 'huh? That's _it_?!'

Right, right. Serph. ^^;;

Well, I like Serph too, and he isn't exactly the same as his counterpart anyway, so... It's all good. ^^ Jinana was a pretty neat character, which is a pity since I knew right from the get-go that I was going to have to kill her. :/ So predictable... ;_; But, that's what fanfiction is for... so all the more reason for me to hope you 'de-stress' a bit more. ;)

I liked the ship scene, it was just disappointing that your choice really has... uh, no impact whatsoever. So anticlimactic...

Well, so long as you're sufficiently skilled, originality is overrated. ^^

Strangely enough, I sort of went with the same setup originally. And I agree that Almighty is overrated for whenever it actually counts. The final boss for DDS has to be one of the wussiest though, since I beat her when I was extremely under leveled. Still, the Hitoshura more than makes up for THAT. <<;;

Step by step.

"Light shines on heaven ..."

To say that the Maribel Tribe was shattered would ... well, it'd actually be a pretty accurate description. There were no more than half a dozen stragglers to the name, joining them on the return trip to Manipura.

All the while, Argilla sang ...

"The hell is this, Serph?"

He looked to his ... subordinate, comrade, friend? All of the above?

If the remaining Maribel seemed broken, and Argilla too busy with trying to keep Jinana coherent, Heat was the one relatively constant element of the background.

You could pretty much be sure he'd always end up somewhere on the 'bloody furious' end of the spectrum, no matter the day.

It was kind of reassuring, as strange as that sounded.

"We're not a hospital, and we sure as hell aren't a mental ward, so why the hell are we slowing ourselves down with the baggage?!"

Of course, he also had about as much tact as a two by four to the face.

"What is a 'hospital', Heat? Or, for that matter, a 'mental ward'?"

"What're you, stupid? They're ...!"

"_How_ do you know? Ask yourself that."

He still wasn't sure he could trust Varna, the whispers, or even himself ...

... but even with the recent 'introduction' of new elements into the struggle of the Junkyard, Serph _knew_ there was no rational explanation to his awareness of some things.

Proof though ...

... he had a rough idea of where to get at least some of that.

Heat was uncharacteristically quiet, though, obviously mulling over his question.

"I have a bad feeling about this," Serph said, catching the redhead's attention from where he was about to go on another tangent of grumbling about 'Argilla's girlfriend'. "Heat, I need to go check something. You're in charge. I'll join up with you at either Manipura or back at the base. If Jinana hasn't snapped out of it by the former, you're taking her along to Muldahara. Sera will be able to do something."

"God, you've turned into a wuss, 'fearless leader'," the other man snorted.

"New recruits may always be available, Heat," the response was chilly enough to make it through to the hothead. Even make him pause, mid-step. "But experienced soldiers and commanders aren't. Remember that. And remember just _who_ led the Maribel."

There.

_That_ seemed to placate him, save for a mumbled "Still think it's more work than it's worth."

"Where the hell are you going, anyway?"

Serph cocked his head to the side, considered ... shrugged.

"Coordinate 136."

"136? Why? That's the middle of nowhere!"

Was it?

Really?

"I wonder."

I figure, the song itself can be a sort of mantra. It's not an entirely groundless assumption that it works, even if it isn't Sera singing. Just not as strongly, or as well.

Enough, though. Barely, but enough.

Yes, Mick is dead. Because spamming Cocytus (which WINs, because 'Random', similarly to Sakura Rage) until he became a coldcut and dragging his frozen ass to feed to Ushas!Jinana and calm her down _could_ have worked, IMO.

Is it really Sera's singing that does it, I wonder? Err, never mind.

Good update, although I weep at its length ('though, really, it's longer than the first part, so I'm being silly :/). Hmm, I feel sort of gypped that the fight with Mike (or rather, Verna ripping him apart) was skipped. Granted, there isn't much point to actually showing it, but it would have still been neat! ^^ Regardless, you need to add some sort of comment about it, since the reader would be damn confused unless you actual include that sidenote.

Already though, that's a pretty interesting (although not big, since Mike never really did anything overall, but still interesting) change. They'll have no reason to go to the amusement park now, unless Bat does something.

Hmm, though something occurred to me on the fight with Mike, wouldn't Verna have gotten in trouble if he fought him alone? His head part completely immobilizes a single target until they're dead (and then you're forced to revive them), with only Verna, wouldn't that be an automatic lose? (*Gulp!* *draindrandrain* "Blarrrg, my innards!"?)

Regardless, still good, I'm hoping for more. ^^

Serph's 'memories' are pretty much swiss cheese - maybe not even that. It's more on an emotional level that he's aware of certain things. For instance, that something important happened at Coordinate 136.

Heh. See, this is a classic case of Game Mechanics vs Storytelling. They don't necessarily mesh all the time. ^_^;;

His fingers traced the Water Crown mark on his cheek ... it seemed to be itching faintly.

The indicators of his eyepiece said he was almost there, likely just that one hill to go ...

... he still didn't know whether he wanted to find something or not.

Step by step, stone by stone, he climbed ...

... the ground rushed past underneath, eaten up by long, bounding leaps that had Varna nearly flying over the killing fields.

There was no other way to describe it, really, since the uneven, rocky, barren terrain that stretched outwards from the Solids' Citadel at Anahata had been witness to countless skirmishes and immesurable bloodshed.

As it was again.

A bolt of lightning slammed down from the weeping heavens, somewhere up ahead where the harsh barks and flashes of gunfire echoed. The ground shook, cracked, splintered open and reached upwards, tossing someone with the crimson slash of Maribel color on their gear into the air.

Something, a flash of shadow and rainwater emerging from the muddy soil, skittered through the battlefield and launched itself towards the flailing figure, but his attention was immediately drawn to the hulking, shambling form that could only be the Solids' leader's avatar.

It was surrounded, but even still, the brute of an Other Self outsized and blatantly overpowered its attackers. Bullets skittered from stone-tough carapace, gale-force wind buffets did little to even give it pause ...

Rahu.

That was it's name, wasn't it? Somehow, Varna knew.

The air snapped, crackled, whipped around him with the release of chakra, and _these_ winds were enough to draw its attention, the chilling frost carried by their embrace biting and tearing into demon flesh.

Lamentation, river of wailing, let your cries chill them to the bone!

Yet another thing he shouldn't have known how to do.

Now, though, he couldn't afford to worry about how, or why. Time was of the essence.

And he had Rahu's attention.

The tremor that seemed to shake the world's fundament itself, as if a great and coiling beast were winding its way underneath the earth, hit just as Varna came down, and while Serph rode it out with more ease than he would have expected of himself, it still knocked Varna slightly off balance ...

Behind you!

The whisper cut through his mind, bypassed it, and struck Varna directly ...

... Serph could feel the attacker, descending from above and behind, their chakra full of malicious intent ...

... muscle memory responded without any hesistation at all, bone and flesh sliding against one-another as Varna's arms snapped outwards, contracting a set of muscles that was totally foreign to Serph but one using which his Other Self found as natural as, say, breathing.

Lethal beauty. Murderous enchantment. Like a cherry blossom soaked in blood.

Both arm-blades unfolded as Varna spun upwards, the corkscrew motion repeatedly draggin them through the flesh of a spindly, spider-like ...

Rahu

... the Demon of two bodies. The shambling behemoth, and the devouring head.

Varna came down in a crouch, blades dripping with ichor, as the severely injured spider-like head of Rahu skittered away towards the rest of its body.

Let me hear it again! River that carries the lamentation of the damned!

And all Rahu knew was ice ...

... until the very top.

It wasn't a particularly large hill, but still offered a good view. And what a view.

Serph's eyes came to rest upon beauty in delapidation. An exaggerated keep, a ... a _fairy tale_ castle, stretching out in the distance below.

His eyepiece display clearly indicated it as the input destination.

And the rain continued to fall.

italics=flashback. underscore=weird little whispers.

Hopefully I managed to mesh mechanics and storytelling at least slightly.

Hope I didn't make Cocytus and Sakura Rage too pompous by not naming them outright.

Hmm, another good addition.

I really like how you incorporated the flashback. It could be considered kinda disjointed, but I personally feel that fits such things like flashbacks very well. It also 'officially' answers the question of what happened.

And regarding Sakura Rage and such, I think it would be silly if you DID name the techniques used. It's like the ridiculous need to shout out the name of jutsu in Naruto. Granted, it's for the benefit of the reader, but it's STILL silly.

Heh. See, this is a classic case of Game Mechanics vs Storytelling. They don't necessarily mesh all the time.
True, true... It does works out better to ignore actual game mechanics, since they tend to bog a story down. (Well, so long as you don't do something stupidly unrealistic, like Serph beating Hitoshura alone. Mike was a wimp anyway, if not for that annoying head piece he'd be a complete pushover... actually, he kinda still is anyway.)

Serph's 'memories' are pretty much swiss cheese - maybe not even that. It's more on an emotional level that he's aware of certain things. For instance, that something important happened at Coordinate 136.
Hmm, indeed. Yet... would anything really happen? At this point in the story, only Bat could pull something. Since both Lupa and Beck (or whatever his leader name was, I forgot) are sort of busy (with Beck than getting his memory trip and kicking Lupa's ass). At least, that's what I assumed.

Still, a valid excuse to get Serph over there. Hmm...

Nah, no worries there. Besides, I'm of the opinion that the more powerful/bigger the enemy, the more cinematic/longer the fight should be. If I ever use Orochi, I'm certainly not going to write the battle like _my_ winning strategy (IE, stand there with _just_ Serph, a Null Element and Null Phys, and spam Amped and Boosted Cocytus at him) went, because that'd be dead boring.

Destiny Land.

It sounded like an amusement park ... whatever that was, and at the same time somehow ominous.

...

Superstition.

Another word he didn't realize he'd known. Oddly appropriate, seeing as the statues' eyes almost seemed to follow him through the entrance hall.

Contrasts, contrasts, _contrasts_ that didn't _belong_ to the Junkyard, he was sure of it.

It was wasteful, this architecture. Built for form rather than function, and almost ... sad in its disrepair.

Wood creaked as he walked, motes of dust rising in his wake as the thick carpets were trod upon for the first time in ...

... a long time, he guessed.

Up.

The pistol was in his hand before the whisper registered, as the floor went over his head, or rather, as he threw himself to the side and into a roll, coming up in a crouch with the weapon in front of him pointing at ...

... absolutely nothing.

No chakra, no movement ... he forced himself to breathe.

Something about this place was setting him off.

Maybe he _was_ going insane.

Up?

Alright, then.

***

This made no sense!

Even less than most things had after Sera's arrival.

Serph felt agitated, even nervous as he pushed open the double doors and stepped out into the ever present drizzle of the Junkyard ...

Drizzle?

Ever present?

The rain's chill felt comfortable on his skin, and the itching of the Water Crown mark abated slightly, or seemed to.

Up.

He looked.

The skies rolled, rust and shades of grey traversing the heavens in an ever continuing spiral.

It was the way things had always been, and he'd never before wondered about it. After all, why should it change?

"But ... isn't it supposed to be ..."

Be what?

Come on, _think_.

You know this, it's right on the edge of your consciousness. Feel it.

A breeze, warmth, with a hint of salt ... you _know_ ... so open your eyes, _look_ and dare to _see_.

"Blue?"

Serph blinked away moisture. A stray raindrop trickled out from under the eyelid that had closed on reflex, taking the elusive image that he could only think of as the most perfect blue he'd ever seen along with it.

He straightened, stepped over to the stone barrier that was the difference between solid footing and a long, sudden drop.

The tower rose over the whole of the castle, in fact, it rose over the whole of the landscape provinding him with an unobstructed view of the environs.

Perfect.

Defensive angles, the insides a deathtrap that his mind was already organizing, firing lanes down the main avenue that extended away from the entrance. Big, yes, but there were Tribes that had more than enough manpower ...

So why did it stand empty?

His eyes narrowed.

Motion?

Stepping up to the barrier he peered out into the twilight of the far horizont, eyepiece working to magnify and filter the image relayed through sniper-gear class optics.

The perks of command.

Solid uniforms, her recognized on the spot. Lots of them.

Bat ... it was hard not to recognize the traitor, even at a distance. The flamboyant second of the Maribel Tribe. Former second, that is. Now leading their erstwhile enemies and ...

His blood froze as he panned to the side.

... Sera?
---

Another case of storytelling vs. game mechanics. What about the silly little puzzles? In this case, nothing. Literally. Not to mean that they won't eventually be shown, somewhat at least.

The more I read this, the more tempted I am to make a DDS/anything crossover.

Any ideas? The obvious ones are Naruto, Negima and possibly Harry Pothead... er, Potter.

...it'd suck for Voldemort if the Power the Dark Lord Knows Not was Atma. It'd also make his life expectancy considerably shorter... :snigger:

The Shinobi World is a Junkyard equivalent, with the Bijuu being some sort of data interference, and Jinchuuriki are merely those whose Atma was awakened early?

The second, I have little idea about, so I'll let it lie.

The lattermost ... doesn't really fit in with DDS, but you _could_ swing a Nocturne/Lucifer's Call cross. Harry the Hitoshura, anyone?

Other ideas ... hmm ...

... something goes wrong, and instead of into the Real World, the cast is thrown into something similar to what they are used to ... and boy, are the Machines going to have a bad hair day. DDS/Matrix.

... I promised myself I would never write or even propose one, but here it is. The Embryon wake up in a Real World. Problem. It's not the one they were aiming for. And now they have to deal with ... high school. Huh? Aliens, time travelers, espers ... I do not comprehend. What is this ... SOS-dan? DDS/Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu. I mean, come on, it's _got_ a Data Entity, after all. It's a match made in heaven!

Either post DDS or post DDS2, Serph finds himself in a bit of a pickle. Strange place, stranger people, even stranger fondness of those people to run around with swords. And my, do they seem to be upset about something. An invasion? An execution? This bears looking into. If only his Asura form didn't draw so much damn _attention_ from them, not to mention send them running in fear or charging in with those pigstickers of theirs. Huh? What in the world is a Hollow? DDS/Bleach.

Hitoshura, the ruler of hell ... has a problem. He needs to get the hang of running the damn (pun intended) place, avoid assassination attempts by new lackeys, and figure out why the old boss of the place is so set on seducing 'cut little Hito-kun'. Will Hell ever be the same again? I doubt it. SMT3/Oh! My Goddess!. Hitoshura/Hild. Bonus points for Hitoshura/Hild/Mara/Rind/Peorth/Urd ... you get the idea.

There's a realm in which an endless spiral of death revolves ... unfortunately, it isn't making him any power, where supposedly it's a fiefdom. Hitoshura? Spira. Spira? Hitoshura. Cue Sin running away with its tail between its legs.

Exactly my line of reasoning, though more in the direction of being connected in a very ... meta sort of way. Maybe Sera's power let her really send her 'friends' to safety at the end of DDS. Well, their data, at least, and it went a few steps to the left. Still leaving us with several issues, like the fact that the Junkyard peeps don't have an 'age' function in their stats (though that's more a concern for the long term view), and wondering where they ended up at. Also, reactions of eventual allies would be interesting ("Y... you're _eating_ ..." *gets violently sick in the bushes*). On the flip, I'd prefer it if just Serph got the ticket there. For one thing, the Embryon would quickly and violently overpower most things standing in their way if they were to be dropped into this world, short of orbital bombardment maybe.

Another idea - .hack/DDS ... much controversy about these 'data bugs' there is ... though, will they start devouring player avatars? If so, is the effect going to be a one-way ticket to coma-land?
