As the description says, I got this idea after reading one of the earlier discworld novels again, Sourcery. The premise of that book is that there are two kinds of pepole who use magic. Therea are the normal wizards and in effect this is every non divine or greater demonic being n the BtVS universe. They use the ambient magic tht floats in the universe as a soujrce of their power. The only limit is how much magic gthey can channel.
The other kind is Sourcerers. These are literally white holes of magic. They can create magic, and when a sourcerer is present, magic will get stronger. The power of a sourcerer is nearly divine, they can do things with magic that make the most powerful mages look like chilren playing games.
After reading a lot of BtVS fanfic, andnot having watched the shows except an episode here or there, I got to thinking. I'm not sure if it is fannon or cannon that Willow was meant to be the most poweful witch in the world. MOre powerful than nearly any other being. She went toe to toe with a god, a weakened one, but a god nontheless.
However she clearly uses the method of magic in the BtVS sytle. THat is she lets the power of stronger beings, such as gods\, and demons, do the actual work. My idea is that Xander, or another being I soppose is one of the 'sorcerers'. However being on the hellmouth and under the nose of Richard Willkins, his power has been blocked. He generates a small amount of magic, but most of the power of some major demons was being used to block this power.
HOwever after Willkins death, suddenly Xander is generating more and more power. THis is where Willow steps in. Xander's powers are basiclly tied to her now . Whether she did it herself or someody did it for her, now no matter how much energy Xander generates, unless he willingly trieds to break the link, all that energy has become a sort of battery for Willow to draw fromm. Willow is a strong mage, however hse is nowhere near as poweful as her reputation paints her. SHe is really drawing on a never ending source of pure magical power. Since Xander does not kknow that he is doing it, there is no real price to pay, no rituals to observe as there would be if she was drawing on a godly source.
What this would do after the end of the series is my thought. Somehow, the one who see's lets Xander actually see magic and nhe notices the one way onduct of magic between Him and Willow.
Xander realises that he has nearly unlimited power. HOwever if he should choose to use it, Willow willo be busted down from 'most powerful mage of her genration' at least and possibly the most powerful mortal mage period, to only a mildly powerful mage, maybe on the level of Ripper when he went to fight Willow?
If Xander does get his powers he has another problem./ As Coin noticed in the discworld its EASY to warp the world, and Xander did not have, like Coin the advantage of growing up learning his powers or his father trapped into his magical staff. Would Xander have to seal himself away from the universe, effectivly becomign a new god of magic, or would he ty to enforce his will on his power and try and stay as mortal as it is possible to be?
And then you get he possible motivation of Willow. DId she believe that Xander was not owrthy of thepower, she was trying to protect him, was she just powerhungry adn trying to find a way to actually transfer the spark of magic that makes Xander a Sourcer to herslef? What is her motivation and how does Xander deal with it?
