Akamatsuverse Soul of Sand Prologue

The melodious sound of childrenÆs laughter drifted through the playground, making the bright, sunny day take on an air of carefree joy. Giggling, an adorable little girl tugged on the hand of her playmate, a small boy of comparable age, pulling him along with her. ôCÆmon Kei-kun!ö she laughed. Behind her, the boy smiled brightly and nodded as he followed her.

As she let go of his hand and ran ahead, he pursued her, intent on having fun with his best friend. As he saw where she was headed, however, his smile began to crumble as he slowed to a halt. ôW-waitàö he called out, but she was laughing too loudly to hear, intent on her destination.

The sandbox.

Turning around and looking for her missing playmate, the girl waved at him. ôKei-kun, cÆmon! LetÆs build a sandcastle!ö

ôButàö He looked from her smiling face down to the sandbox she was standing in, a worried expression flashing across his features. She didnÆt wait to hear his protesting, however, having already knelt down to begin building her castle, sure that he would join her.

He gulped, looking fearfully at the sandbox for a few momentsàbut slowly, his feelings for her outweighed his trepidation. She was his best friend, and he really wanted to play with her and make her happy. Slowly, he climbed into the sandbox, settling down across from her to assist her efforts, the pleased grin she directed at him helping to gradually dispel his worry.

It took a while, but finally the pair leaned back to examine the magnificent sandcastle, the girl having moved over to lean against her friend as they regarded their work. After spending a few minutes admiring it, she sat up, turning her intent gaze to the boy next to her. ôKei-kun,ö she said softly.

ôHm?ö It was only at the sound of his name that he looked at her.

ôDid you know that if two people to go Todai together, they find happiness?ö

ôHuh?ö For a moment, confusion played across the boyÆs face, but he didnÆt have time to try and understand what she meant as she suddenly closed her eyes and leaned in, kissing him on the cheek.

ôLetÆs go to Todai together, Kei-kun.ö Her voice was softer than its usual exuberant tone; a testament to her seriousness. Blushing, the little boy looked at her in surprise for a moment, before smiling widely and nodding his head.

He was about to say something in response, when the sandbox suddenly shuddered.

The girl looked around, not understanding what was happening as she fell back onto her bottom. The boy, however, suddenly looked terrified as he collapsed onto his hands and knees.

The sand in the box began to rise and fall, like water on the ocean. The girl looked around, still more confused than worried. But the boy seemed to be on the verge of panic, crawling towards her rapidly. ôRun! Get out of the sandbox! Hurry!ö Reaching her, he managed to grab her hand and get to his feet, tugging her along as he tried to get out of the box.

But there was no longer a box to get out of. There was only sand everywhere, in every direction for as far as the eye could see. The playground was gone, replaced with an endless desert.

ôNoànoànoàö the boy was chanting under his breath, looking around as hysteria began to overtake him. Please, please, please donÆt let this be happeningà

ôKei-kun! WhatÆs wrong???ö More scared by his reaction than by the suddenly changed landscape, the girl put her hand on his shoulder, hoping to comfort her friend.

He turned to her, unsure of whether he should try and explain why he was so scared, or to try and convince her to look for a way out, but before he could open his mouth the sand under her exploded upward. Screaming, the girl fell back, losing her grip on his hand as the sand fell back down onto her, burying her partially.

ôNo!ö He tried to run towards her, but it was too late. The sand collecting her was rising up, as though in a vast pillar, holding her at the top. As he watched in horror, he realized it wasnÆt a pillar but an arm, an arm ending in a claw that was holding her tightly in its grasp.

ôKei-kun! Kei-kun!!!ö Her screams grew louder as she was lifted into the air, her head still uncovered, letting him see her eyes that were looking down at him in absolute panic.

But he couldnÆt say anything back, because the owner of the clawed arm was behind her, looking at the prize he held in his grip. Gigantic, the monstrous creature, the demon, opened its mouth, revealing teeth bigger than either of the two children. Its black eyes open wide, highlighted by the patch of black across them on its face; it emitted a shrill, horrible laugh that contained no humor, only malice.

He opened his mouth, but the scream wouldnÆt come. His legs shook, but he couldnÆt move. He couldnÆt do anything, because if he did, then the demon might take its eyes off his friend and see him instead.

ôKEI-KUN!!!ö shrieked the little girl one last timeàand then she was gone as the massive claw of sand closed. Blood rained down everywhere, splashing onto the little boy and soaking the sand, turning it red.

Tears of pure terror sliding down his cheeks, the little boy could only stare up at the monster, paralyzed in fear. A whimper came from his throat, as he saw the creatureÆs eyes move, locking onto him, and he knew that he was about to be nextà

* * * * *

Keitaro UrashimaÆs eyes snapped open.

Cursing internally, he sat up in his seat, blinking his eyes. Outwardly, he seemed like a young man awakening from a nap. Internally, he was seething.

He had fallen asleep! Granted, it could only have been for a few seconds, because the train he was on wasnÆt torn to pieces and there were no body parts strewn around him, but that didnÆt matteràthat he had let himself fall asleep at all was inexcusable!

He hadnÆt wanted to ride a train, since he disliked being around people, but the journey from his house to the Hinata district had been too far to walk, and he hadnÆt wanted to use any moreàexotic forms of transportation if at all possible. So heÆd elected to take a train, paying extra for a private room in one of the upscale passenger cars. He hadnÆt expected the seats to be so nicely cushioned, however, and that, combined with the gentle motion of the train had made him stupidly fall into a light slumber.

Sitting up straight so he wasnÆt leaning against the too-comfortable seatback again, Keitaro instead directed his gaze out the window. He ignored the light reflection of his own face that was present in the glass, not wanting to think about the permanent black rings that encircled his eyes; he could ignore the blackness of his eyelids, but the sight of the darkness ringing his eyes was something he hated to see û it reminded him of another creature with similar features that he despised.

Instead, he turned his thoughts to his destination. It was the one remaining place he had to go; the one place where he could keep fighting to attain his dream of becoming a Todai student. As he looked into the distance, he whispered softly...

Whoa, dark. Makes me feel really sorry for Gaara and Keitaro.

Poor Keitaro, forever doomed to a life of loneliness, forever sentenced to a life without sleep.

I'm very interested in the backround of the story, just how did the incarnation of sand ended up being sealed in Keitaro?

Well, that's one way of removing Naru from the equation...

The promise girl just got smushed, Keitaro apparantly looks almost as goth as Kanako and sleeps less than I do, and apparantly there are sand daemons about. I'm lost as bad as Ryoga right now, but this is awesome.

Actually, that removes Mutsumi from the picture.

Warning spoiler!

Mutsumi was the girl that told him about the Todai promise. He made the promise with Naru though.

Don't you mean Mutsumi? Mitsumi is Mitsumi Konno aka Kitsune. I sense another typo story....

You caught me. *holds his hands up*

Though a story with Kitsune as the promise girl would be interesting. However, I think there is one already. Not for sure on that.

A typo that led to a decent story idea?

Though GH already had an idea where Mitsune was the promise girl. :p Not sure if there is an actual story with that premise yet though.

Actually, Kitsune's name is Konno Mitsune. Mitsumi is a name not connected with LH.
Turnabout is fair play. Mwahaha.

This is indeed an interesting turn of events. Thinking about Kanako, I do have a somewhat scary idea.

Basically, it's this: When they were both young children, Kanako was too scared to sleep alone. So she went into her brother's room.

Unfortunately for her, Keitaro was asleep.

Keitaro wakes up with the room painted red, and not just the walls. Kanako is nowhere to be found.

See where I'm going with this?

Well, that's what I get for posting at 3 AM after having four hours of sleep the previous night.

And I think it has been proven far, far too many times around here that typos are among the most dangerous creatures known to fanfiction inspiration. I read "Aunt Keitaro" a month ago and my eyes still don't feel clean!

I hear it helps to apply a sharp spork to the problem area. ^_^

Neah, i hear battery acid does wonders!

Actually, that removes Mutsumi from the picture.
Actually it would probably remove both girls since without Mutsumi there will be no promise.

Actually that would be interesting, since it would screw Keitaro even more.

People love him but the moment they get close to him....

However, there is still a question of just where that it - and that the perpretrator probably lives half a globe away from us... -_-

I know nuts about the Sandman genre(if it even is that... :huh.: ), so I can't comment on this properly until more of the story gets out.

Actually, that removes Mutsumi from the picture.
I am betting that was a fradulent slip, say by someone trying to imprint sublimal messages of Mitsune/Mutsumi lemon pairings in our minds, in the hope that someone will fall prey and start getting an irresistable urge to start writing one... :snigger:

If you want to screw Keitaro over, drop him blindfolded into Madrid during the Running of the Bulls (or, as I prefer to call it, the Chasing of the People). NO HARMING HER INCESTUOUS GOTHINESS.

Why not? Nothing screws a person more than killing a sibling. Besides if you were to drop this Keitaro into Madrid i fear for the bulls! What you have something against animals? I'll sick the animal rights associations on you!

I don't think he was reffering to the perpretator's eye...

Inferior creatures? You mean like other people?

SECONDED!!! No one touches Kanako (besides Keitaro).

And I'm hoping that it was Naru and not Mutsumi who was killed off because

Naru being dead = WIN! :D ^_^
Mutsumi being dead = LOSE!!!  :flameon:

Oh, and I'm flattered at having been the inspiration for yet another of your great fics Alzrius, can't wait to see more of this one, especially the girls' reactions to him and his emaciated insomniac appearance.

Yes, and taking into account that he spends a lot more time together with Kanako, since they live in the same house and all, such an occurrence wouldn't be that hard to imagine.

I can even see his parents keeping away from him, even though they love him. After all how can you hug your child when the demonic sand entity will crush you?

You know, in some ways you people are more fanboyish than the people who say only Ranma/Akane and Keitaro/Naru should be written.

#25
I support Keitaro/Naru to an extent, because Naru seriously doesn't deserve all of the shit that gets heaped on her in fandom - she's a nice girl (at heart), she's just a violent maniac, if that makes any sense. It's not my favored pairing or even in my top list, but it's not treated as heresy like some people think of it.
