The first bit of my new project... More to come. Feel free to comment!
Main Bridge, USS Sojourner, NCC-42357
The soft glow of the control consoles did little to illuminate the already darkened bridge. Captain Adam Carter Lee couldn't help but smile in approval as he leaned back in his chair, a tub of popcorn on his lap.
"We seem to be a little short on brotherly love around here."
"If you're with him, you'd better get yourself out of here."
"We're on our way. Come on."
"So, are Butch and Sundance, like... Together?" Lieutenant Mitena Haro asked from the operations station ahead of and to the starboard of Lee's chair. The pretty Bolian's control console was covered in containers of various candies, chips, and assorted junkfoods. She munched on some Ktarian chocolates as she watched with rapt attention. At tactical, right behind Lee, a petite, black haired, red eyed woman scowled.
"Not everything is like your fantasies, Haro," Lieutenant Jeria Wyn stated flatly. She lifted up a drink with a straw and sipped on it.
"Oh c'mon, it'd be so..." Haro began, before being shushed by the Asian man sitting at the console next to hers. He was the helmsman, Ensign William Koroshiya.
"It would not and you're talking too much," he admonished. A few other crewmembers, sitting on the deck or milling about behind the tactical console, followed suit.
"You don't have to mean it or anything. Just ask us to stick around. I promise you... I can't help you, Sundance."
The gunman on the screen froze, eyes widening as he realized just who he had been accusing of cheating. Haro giggled and happily munched on multi-colored egg-like candies.
"Sir, are you going to share any of your popcorn?" An NCO with a blue collar mumbled to Lee nearby. The captain looked over, recognizing the Andorian petty officer (Ruik, he believed) and with a smile held it out.
"Have some, petty officer." He turned his attention back to the screen, grinning as Sundance demonstrated just why he was the fastest gun in the West.
The turbolift doors opened.
"Excuse me... Excuse me... Can I just-Thank you," murmured a deep, feminine voice. Finally emerging through the crowd, Doctor Kes breathed a sigh of irritation. She'd been late for Movie Night! And she was looking forward to seeing this too...
"Doctor," greeted the Captain, followed by a few others. Kes nodded and smiled.
"Captain," she greeted as well, turning her attention to the viewer. A loud beeping went off, making Haro jump and squeal as she caused her snacks to all clatter to the deck.
"EEP! Oh damnit, damnit, damnit!" She cursed, making many crewmembers hiss for her to be quiet.
"Shhh!"
"Shut up!"
"Oh for," Lee sighed, standing up. "Computer, pause movie. Raise lights," he ordered. The lights came on, many in the crew groaning and protesting.
"Now now, none of that," Lee ordered. He turned to Haro, who was mourning over her snacks. "Haro! What's up?"
"Hm? Oh! Er... It's... A priority one message from Starfleet Command!"
"Right, I'll take it in my ready room. Put it through, will you?" Lee asked, stretching. He made his way to the door, passing a few crewmembers and apologizing.
"Sorry, sorry... Don't worry, this will be very quick... Castor, you take the-" He looked around for his erstwhile second in command and scowled.
"Computer, locate Commander Castor."
"Commander Castor is currently in Science Lab 1."
Lee sighed. "Then tell him to get up here and stop hitting on T'Kal. Bad enough I have to interrupt movie night for some stuffy admiral, now my relief isn't available and-"
"Ahem."
Lee slowly turned around, remaining perfectly composed despite the fact that Admiral Kathryn Janeway's face was in the main viewer, not looking amused. Haro coughed as his gaze fell squarely on her, and she smiled sheepishly.
"Er... Eh heh... Sorry sir, um... " She held up a squished gummy bear. "This was on the control console and I sort of-"
"No problem... Ensign," Lee allowed with a somewhat disconcerting smile at his operations officer. "Just send it to my Ready Room."
"Aye sir!" Haro replied. "Sorry Admiral! Sir! Ma'am! Um..." Admiral Janeway had opened her mouth the moment Haro had switched the feed. As Lee headed into his ready room, a crewwoman in gold looked over at Haro curiously.
"Um, ma'am... I thought you were a Lieutenant."
"Oh, it's allright," Haro replied cheerfully, "the captain threatens to demote me every few days!"
"I wish he'd follow through," Wyn muttered from tactical.
"Hey!"
The captainÆs ready room of the Sojourner was a cozy, if cramped affair, stuffed with mementos from previous commanders. Several bookcases filled with various objects lined the room, a kind of organized chaos that each successive captain had added to. He smirked a bit at his own old revolvers from the ranch back home sitting next to a Vulcan kuratÆol sculpture. He poked the red crystalline figure of a Vulcan master, left over from the very first captain of the Sojourner, before turning to his desk. Sitting behind it he flipped on his desktop computer, smiling pleasantly at the now scowling face of Admiral Janeway.
ôAdmiral,ö he acknowledged.
ôSomehow IÆm not as surprised as I should be,ö the (in)famous former commander of the USS Voyager stated flatly. ôConsidering yourà Reputation, Captain.ö
ôDid you need something, Admiral?ö Lee asked calmly, his fingers in a steeple. Janeway snorted.
ôWhat is your current status, Captain?ö
ôWeÆre currently in orbit around Alderamin I. The science station there was having some trouble with their computer systems, and we were in the area so we stopped by to help.ö Lee shrugged. ôSolar activity studies, mostly.ö
JanewayÆs eyebrows rose.
ôI hope youÆre not planning on blowing up this star tooàö
ôBlow up one solar system, just one, and nobody trusts you near stars ever again,ö Lee sighed, shaking his head. He gave her his most charming smile, not quite eliminating all of the sarcasm in his tone.
ôStill, weÆre not planning on blowing this one up. In fact, weÆre just about done.ö
ôVery well. The moment you are finished set course for Deep Space Nine. WeÆll have a new assignment for you there.ö
Lee leaned forward.
ôCan you tell me what this new assignment is, Admiral?ö
ôYou will receive that information when you arrive. Janeway out,ö the admiral stated crisply, cutting off the transmission. Lee frowned, leaning back, and glanced over at the door. He hit his commbadge.
ôKoroshiya, set a course for Deep Space Nine, warp seven.ö
ôAye sir.ö
ôHaro?ö
Some sounds of crinkling wrappers greeted him before she responded.
ôYes sir?ö
ôWe have a new assignment at Deep Space Nineà IÆd prefer to know what it is before we arrive.ö
He could hear the bright smile in her voice.
ôNot a problem for my captain!ö
ôGoodàö
Haro coughed. ôSoà Did she mention the solar system?ö
ôWho doesnÆt these days?ö Lee quipped.
ôSheesh, you blow up one solar system, just one, and-ô
ô-And nobody trusts you near stars ever again,ö Lee finished with Haro, sounding resigned. She giggled.
ôYouÆd think it was a bad thingà After all, it wasnÆt inhabitedàö
ôYes, well, there may have been the teeny, tiny issue of us not intending to blow it upà And Starfleet not wanting it blown up...ö Lee sighed and shook his head. ôIÆll be going off shift now. Tell Castor to get his arse to his chair and take his bloody shift.ö
