In the original movies Vader was pretty much showed as somebody who valued control over himself, his troops, ect while Palpatine at best seemed to have the self-control of a three year old. But in the new movies their roles have been swapped around somewhat so that Anakin is a winy self-centered brat with self-control issues while it was Palpatine who was about control, control, and more control.

So I was wondering if any real reason given for it or if it's just something that you're supposed to ignore like the thing about them being apparently more advanced in the past then in the future?

Personally I think Palpatine's brain got fried at the fight between him and Mace Windu.

Vader's lack of control lost him his limbs, his wife, and kids. That's gonna leave a few mental scars.

Palps almost single handedly took over the Republic and crushed the Jedi. If that isn't an ego booster, nothing is.

Guess what I'm sayin' is that Vader gained control because he had nothing else. Palpatine otoh just completed the goal that all his control was for. He had, from his perspective, no reason to stay in control, and could let his hair down.

That's my interpretation anyway. :huh.:

Vader's desire for control comes from him having killed Padme and losing control, it became his obsession.

There's a hell of a lot of difference between most middle-aged men and their young selves, nevermind those who just about got themselves killed and did get themselves crippled. Vader lost everything when he chose to join Palpatine. He had nothing left but his powers. Of course he learned control.

Also the difference that Anakin, even after he freshly turned to the Dark Side, apparently wanted to help/protect people, free slaves (well, not so sure he still had that goal by the time of RotS) and whatnot. Then by the time of the OT he's helped enslave the wookies, personally killed hundreds and order planetary bombardments of entire cities just for one or two people there sheltering Jedi.
