Evangelion Stumbling Along the path to greatness

This was sparked by a simple idea: what was the cost of the war following Second Impact on JapanÆs infrastructure? More importantly, what would be the implication of it on school systems? Going by the fact that we see laptops in common use in 2015àà.

Following the disputes sparked after Second Impact, the Valentine Treaty of February 14, 2001 also included promises of infrastructural support to many of the countries, since most of the pre-existing was underwater by now. The political and economic situation of that time called for something progressive. Considering the popularity and utility provided by the internet in the decade before, it was therefore established that the internet would serve as the new classrooms where schools were not possible or under-construction. This naturally sparked the IT industry, lead by the purpose to build cheap and durable computers that could be handed out en masse to help along the relief actions.
---- history.jp

Year 2005

His teacher had concluded, in the near year after his arrival, that Shinji would need some form of interaction other than his to grow up to be a function member of society. As such, while teaching Shinji the bare basics of the language, he had an internet connection installed to the mountain shack that they currently shared.
He logged on to the school network on his teacherÆs laptop. Of course, he was not privy to the factors involved in the action. He merely did as was asked of him, without understanding the motivation or intent behind it. It was what was easiest to him.

As soon as he entered in his name onto the black screen (taking him a few seconds to find the keys), the blackness of the screen changed into a picture. The picture showed a desk with simple walls in the background except for a single green board, with some letters spelled on it. It took him sometime to comprehend, but he eventually recognized it a name. There was a man standing behind the desk, looking unflappable and at ease. Certainly more at ease than him.

GOOD MORNING, CLASS! came the message, both along the screen and through the speakers.

Year 2009

Shinji logged on to the school network, by now actually understanding the details inherent in the simple act. The first order of business was to check the scores left by his instructor on his exam from yesterday. Seeing that he achieved passing grade, he gave the print command and promptly forgot about the matter, giving it no real importance. He focused his attention on getting through the backlog of material that he was expected to cover throughout his schooling career, and felt as if the ordeal he faced yesterday had only grown. Releasing a sigh, he let his fingers drift along the keyboard, granting the screen his full attention.

Harboring an above normal intellect through sheer genes, Shinji was easily capable of sitting down ad granting his full attention to the course material. His teacher left him alone as long as he kept out of the way and showed a basic competency in his studies. Honestly, he preferred it that way. It was much easier. As such, the majority of ShinjiÆs time was spent in front of his laptop, when he wasnÆt cooking or doing chores around the house. Concerned over the fact, his teacher had instructed him to go for daily walks around the mountain, mainly to avoid making Shinji into a hikikomori, but also to ensure that Shinji had at least a somewhat healthy physique.

Year 2012

CONGRATULATIONS Ikarishinji FOR COMPLETING YOUR REQUIRED SCHOOLING. HOPE TO SEE YOU GO ON TO A RESPECTED UNIVERSITY. THANK YOU FOR USING SCHOOL.

Spending most of time in front of the laptop (i.e. in school) had allowed Shinji to get through his studies at a breakneck speed. He had chosen not to wander around the internet, choosing instead to live inside the boundaries he knew. Now thoughà..

Now, he would have to change his boundaries.

----------------------------------
ôSensei ?ö

ôYes, Shinji-kun?ö

ôWhat do you do after you finish school?ö

ôYou move onto higher studies if you want, or you could join the work force straight away. ô

ôHow do I move onto higher studies?ö

ôWhy the interest?ö

ôBecause I finished schoolö
==============================

What I need here is help to progress this to more than a mere plot point. Any ideas? Feedback?

This would have no impact on the show whatsoever IMHO.

Asuka is shown as having graduated college... and she is put in the same Jr. High classroom as Shinji. Something I have gotten into discussions on multiple times in the past here and anifics.

Therefore, I cannot picture a smarter Shinji not being thrown into the same class as before. Heck, he might even be smart enough to pretend to be dumb.

As educated as either could be... unless they hack the Magi for th eknowledge of what is happening, everything done to them in series was out of their control.

EDIT: I offer a different approach though. Tie your idea into one of mine I originally laid down here for Asuka, but make it for a smart Shinji instead.

Have it be so he knows he is being bugged / followed under electronic survelience, and make him able to figure out ways to constantly make it break down without them knowing he is doing it deliberately.

Hmm...., I was thinking something more simpler tho'. Like forcing Shinji to ininteract with adults, living in a university environment, might cause unforcseen consequences on his attitude. Is that too far-fetched?

Like I said though, Asuka had college degree, education, exposure to adults, and years of training. It did not help her.

You can change his attitude and/or his education/exposure. That has been done. But the circumstances are forced on the children to be the same, since it is all dictated by Gendo, and all info given to them (when they get it at all) comes from people lying to them and whom are expert manipulators.

I've seen Hellsing crosses, a James Bond cross, a Artemis Fowl cross, and even on this very forum a Dr. Who type cross, and in them and a couple others, he is made smart and educated, if in different ways than your own scenario. Yet he still gets the same info, is blackmaled the same way, starts the fight a similar way.

Thus, IMHO, the way to break the cycle is not truly to give just a education, but to give knowledge. To get the knowledge, he would either:
- need to know some spies (done in the James Bond cross for example), or
- communicate with Yui (seen it), or
- find out from hacking the Magi (seen, but normally later in the timeline), or
- torturing someone in the know (seen in one where he was raised by evil), or
- be a contact telepath (seen this as well).

Thus, that led to my posting of the other idea I had some time back in my prior post, merely applied to Shinji instead of Asuka.

The problem is the deliberate manipulations. Shinji and Asuka are 14. The youngest, and most gullible, and most easily manipulated member of Nerv that Shinji/Asuka could squeeze relevent info from would be Maya, and she has some 8+ years on them, and full college degree as well. The heavy hitters of Akagi, Fuyutski, and Gendo would be well beyond any of them, and Misato herself was in the dark on a lot until too late.

Even if you make them smarter people wise, I cannot picture it helping them.

Just throwing this out there, but what if Shinji was, at the time of his "recall," currently attending college, instead of just ready to attend?

With Asuka, since she had finished her degree and was thus out of school altogether, it doesn't seem that far of a stretch to just throw her in the class in order to keep an eye on her; however I don't see the powers that be being able to reasonably justify pulling a currently studying undergraduate out of college to go back to high school, nor do I see any college student accepting such a situation.

So, let Shinji be a semester or two into his college studies at the start. Then have him be transferred to a local university as a condition of his move to Tokyo-3. Hell, you could even have him dual enrolled in the high school as a formality anyway.

Of course, when Asuka does show up, and sees Shinji allowed to attend university, she will undoubtedly throw a fit when she's made to go to high school. That's something that you should be able to have fun with.

I was planning on having Shinji graduate and working for NERV by the time the angel attacks. Was also planning on having Shinji join up with Nerv through choice. Would that be original? I really don't think the blackmail option would happen the same.

Tho' of course there can and will be changes to the plot line.

I have this amusing image of Shinji sitting dutifully in class, listening to the standard junior high curriculum, regurgitated more or less word for word. Apparently attentive but actually pursuing an online degree and ignoring the teacher. Then when he's given coursework, simply downloading copies of what he handed in last time around.

For amusement, when Shinji moved to Tokyo-3 Misato looked for the school records of Junior High School student Ikari Shinji, couldn't find them (because he's in University) and a new record was set up for him. Later then national database flag up that Ikari Shinji (Junior High) is fraudulently handing in duplicates of the work of Ikari Shinji (University). Shinji gets suspended for cheating... and then the police start looking for him for 'selling' his coursework. But all they can find is that he's vanished behind NERV's security...

A Shinji as smart and inquisitively curious as you describe, yet willingly working for Nerv... hired at that age as something other than a pilot, under his father?

I cannot picture it. However, just becuase I cannot picture that, do not let that stop you.

Closest to this scenario I can think of in a non-crossover setting, of a smart inquisitive mind and still hating father but without him working for Nerv, is oddly a sort of lemon story with a plot called 'Hentai Shinji' by gmgurp666. Regrettibly, has not been updated recently.

Perhaps you should go darker. Shinji finishes school early, and then tries to attend a university - which could easily lead to more independence and self confidence (his weakness, Asuka's strength). This goes completely against Gendo's plans. He needs Shinji to be weak and manipulatable.

So Gendo orders that Shinji's hopes of higher education be squashed. Shinji is rejected from all universities and effectively confined to his own house - in a form of house arrest. He wasn't supposed to be told why - it would have just been another method of keeping him meek - except for the one friendly teacher who gave Shinji the computer in the first place, and didn't think that his father's interference was right, let slip that the reason he couldn't go to school was because of the orders of the secret organization called NERV.

Shinji now has far too much free time (a couple of years with no school and no job), access to the internet as his only escape, and a reason to dislike a secret agency.

Some possible twists
- Shinji becomes something of a conspiracy buff while hunting for info on NERV. Not only does he know about the Eva project, but he's online-pals with Kensuke before ever getting to Tokyo-3.
- While trying to help Misato get 'un-lost' the first time he's in the geo-city, he pulls her over to a wall-terminal to get her to log into the system to pull up a map. Unable to help himself, he shoulder-surfs her password, and now has access to everything on the system that she does - including all of the little secret things he's not supposed to ever find out.
- When meeting his father for the first time, he cites the directive number which prevented him from going to university.

Just a few ideas.

Well, if Shinji can avoid being killed, he's going to really screw with Gendo's plans. Of course, what would help him more, is getting Ritsuko's password, or better yet, Fuyutsuki's.

If this darker Shinji was done, I picture him expending out form the 'directive' knowledge pretty fast. A fast tracked dead end univeristy prodegy stuck with an internet connection for 2 years is going to want to hunt down every scrap of legitimate and runored nerv knowledge.

I could picture him becoming good friends with Aida, even running into him on-line before going to Tokyo3.

An interesting take might be Kaji's reaction. Shinji may in fact be setting him self up for recruitment by JSSDF.

well, I'm going to follow on the rejected from uni idea. That also opens up 3 years for Shinji to do whatever, giving me time to actually change his personality through constant pressure filled events. That, would probably be the best way to build up Shniji's character from a runner to a fighter.
