Suggestion/Question: Member Access Modes

I was wondering... is there a setting in the member profile or some other way to basically make the forum access on demand read only, or in other words to restrict your own access to a lurk or view only mode?

Just wondering. As it seems like it would be a useful feature to have on forums that enforce a log in.

I also would not mind locking out my own access if I'm at work.

Thanks.

I seem to remember Hawk saying a long while back (at least a year ago) that he was never going to change this forum from enforced log-in, because he liked it the way it was and thought being able to benefit from the forum (reading access) without the option of reviewing or critiquing what the person reads was akin to theft.

So, this is unlikely to be done, putting aside that Hawk isn't even around anymore.

Well... I was not really asking if he intended to change the enforced log in to access type.

I just was wondeirng if there was a way for a member to make themselves a view only mode where they could view not post anything.

As for Hawk not being here.... yeah, nothing to be done about that.

You mean the "Print Topic" option at the top each thread?

Uhm... Otherwise, all I can think of from what you're talking about, is something that requires an admin or mod that can control Membership groups.

No... I was refering to the concept or possibility of a switch or setting in a members own profile, that would switch on and off the ability to actually make posts. Not turn off the ability to get into the forum, or view posts, just to make posts.

It occurs to me it could be a good feature for users to have, for example, if at work, they could view a forum on their break, but not issue posts over corporate internet.

Or if someone is obsessive enough, to want to force themselves into a lurk only mode.

Well, I know that its an option on a heavily modified VBulletin forum, but otherwise, what you're looking for is something that requires a very good and understanding forum moderator or admin when it comes to Invisionfree, Zetaboard, and default VB forums.

In other words, not Hawk. :D

Well... it is not worth near that much trouble. I just thought it might have been a buried option.

Besides... as stted, I wanted to be able to turn it on off myself, not be going to a mod constantly.

I can safely say that's not an option with Invisionfree.
