Maya's fingers flew over the control panels, her keen brain quickly triangulating the point of origin for the signal.

"Look like it's coming from... Big Sky itself. It's a weak signal... No active fusion source of Neelaa origin..." She looked back over at the Captain.

"It looks like a beacon, sir."

"Not a ship?" Asked Constance, after recovering. She glanced at Graham in thanks before focusing back on Maya.

"Well, I'm not sure... We do have a firing solution but we'd have to go to full burn to get in range in... twenty minutes?"

Constance's eyes narrowed and her tail curled. She stood up and looked back at the communications tech.

"What kind of signal are we talking here?"

The tech looked embarrassed. "I-I'll check on it, right now sir!" He scrambled back for his console, as Constance restrained a sigh.

Danny had taken the weapons station in an instant and began relaying information to the security personnel manning the guns around the ship, activating them. He completely ignored the fact that the Commander had mistaken him for a Lieutenant. They were all pretty new together, so mistaking an Operations Specialist First Class with an officer was....understandable.

He heard the officers talking and even though it didn't sound like a threat he still doesn't stop relaying information and energy to the weapons.

"All stations report on battle-readiness." Graham ordered. "Gunnery Officer-" he stopped, and looked around. "Hang on, where the devil is the Gunnery Officer? Should be here by now!"

There are times when the neural network was more trouble than it was worth.

"OH DEAR GOD! WHY DID I CHECK OUT /B/?!"

And there were times when the neural network was damn useful.

=ACCESSING NEURAL CHATROOM=
-Private room: Seraphim Droids-
ADD-1337 has joined the chatroom
ADD-1337: GUYS! SOMETHING'S UP
Lord Brandrar: What?
BLIP: What is it?
ADD-1337 is now known as Adel
Woody: What did you do?!
Adel: I haven't done anything yet!
Adel: The WepSecs are prepping the guns!
BLIP: EHH??!
Woody: What!?
Lord Brandrar: Who's the enemy?!
Adel: Not quite sure, but I heard that it could be Neelaa
BLIP: PANIC LEVELS RISING!
Lord Brandrar: What, seriously?! Sweet!
Woody: Calm down Blip.
Woody: Now how would you know this then, Adel?
Adel: Usual
Woody: One of these days I'm going to tell the captain that you hacked into the ships computers and planted a monitor process
Adel: Yeah yeah whate
Adel: Hang on, I'm getting an update
Adel: Huh, false alarm
Lord Brandrar: WHAT!? FFFFF
Woody: What's happening Adel!?
BLIP: Panic levels decreasing
Adel: Not a ship, a beacon
Adel: brb
Lord Brandrar: WHAT? DON'T YOU DARE!
Adel has quit the chatroom
Adel logged out of the chat and headed towards the bridge, as his mentor Gray told him several times, information is power.

Danny finished running the checkoff with the gunners and turned at the Commander's voice.

"Sir, the Gunnery Officer has most likely taken personal control of one of the guns already. I have the Weapons Station." His voice was even and matter-of-fact, but it betrayed his excitement. "All weapons are online and battle ready, sir. Security detail will finish manning posts in approximately thirty seconds."

"You know, it makes it a lot harder to study alien pieces of technology when you blow them up! Not impossible, of course, but it takes away time that I spend on my own projects!" Hector Fallax's voice piped up over the Seraphim's internal com system.

"Frankly, that only provides more incentive to do so! Mr. LeCartier and Adel haven't fully recovered from your last 'personal project'!" Graham snapped, eye twitching once.

"So much pinching... so... much... pinching..." LeCartier and Adel muttered, a glazed looks passing across their features before retuning to normal.

"And while I'm at it, get off the com system! We'll deliver whatever we get to the labs, and you'll make do with what you get!" Graham added.

"What? (SMASH) I'm clearing (SMASH tinkle) some room out for the (CRASH smash SMASH) beacon! Can't hear (CRASH) you! Talk to (crash) you later!" Hector's voice sounded a bit distant, then the com system went silent.

"Times like this make me wonder is he's more trouble than he's worth." Graham muttered to himself with a sigh.

Constance slid into the communications room, now looming over the shoulder of the hapless tech. She didn't like to play the badguy, but sending the entire crew to battlestations over a beacon wasn't what she called her idea of a good time.

"Well?" She asked. The tech turned around, rubbing the back of his head.

"Sir, it looks like... A distress beacon."

"Distress?" Constance frowned. "How old?"

"Say about two hours, sir. It's an automated beacon and some parts of the transmission are garbled... But it's definitely military grade."

So, a crashed Neelaa military vessel... Definitely worth investigating. Especially if they came looking for their lost ship, which would no doubt cause a whole lot of mess. This was their frontier just as much as it was the Coalition's, but even so, Constance did NOT want to engage Neelaa starships in combat if she could help it. She'd rather avoid the situation entirely.

"All right... Find a comm relay to the colony and get a message to them about the crashed ship. Then send off an encoded Otherspace transmission to the nearest transceiver. We have located a possible crashed Neelaa vessel, are investigating, request assistance ASAP. Get that all off immediately."

"Aye sir!"

She pulled out her PERCOMD and dialed the science lab.

"Dr. Falax, we may have a Neelaa starship for you to go over." She cut in a channel to Adel as well. "Adel, work with Dr. Falax, I want survey teams ready to go in an hour for recon. Grab some Espatiers too, I don't want to go into this blind." She then switched to the infirmary. "Doctor, ready search and rescue efforts, there may be casualties." Finally, she exited the communications room and walked back to her chair.

"Mr. Stubbs, gets us into Big Sky's orbit ASAP. Mr. Dretz, maintain combat readiness. And Miss Ibuki? Get ready for a full sweep of the planet. I want to find this ship and quickly... Before anyone comes in response to their distress beacon."

"Aye sir!"

Adel has entered the chat
Adel: back
BrandR: wb
BLIP: Welcome back!
Woody: Hey, so what's the scoop?
Adel: We've picked up a distress signal coming from Big Sky
Woody: You're serious?
BrandR:....so what's going to happen?
Adel: Don't know, still waiting for more information
======================================================
Outgoing Message from USNS Seraphim
We have located a possible crashed Neelaa vessel, are investigating, request assistance ASAP.
======================================================
Adel: and there it is
BrandR: Sweet! I hope I get to be on the survey team!
Woody: Who knows? I for one would like to be part of the team as well.
BLIP: But what if the Neelaa ship is a bad ship?!
Adel: Chill Blip, it doesn't really matter who goes on the survey mission. I'm just kinda glad it wasn't a hostile ship targeting us
==========================================================================
Transmission from the Captain:
"Adel, work with Dr. Falax, I want survey teams ready to go in an hour for recon. Grab some Espatiers too, I don't want to go into this blind."
==========================================================================
Adel:.....
BrandR:.......
Woody:........
BLIP: Hey, you're going on the survey mission Adel!
Adel: So it seems. With Dr. Falax no less
BrandR: Well, I better get back to guarding the armoury. Seeya laters guys
Woody: I should get going as well, the cargo bay might need me for something. Bye
Adel: The hell?! You two wanted to go on the survey mission! The hell I'm going on a mission alone with Falax!
BrandR has left the chat
Woody has left the chat

Adel:.....Bastards
Adel has left the chat
Adel close the chatroom screen in his internal computer and proceeded to do what he was ordered to do. Adel sent out several transmissions to the survey teams and various Espatiers informing them about the situation and requesting that they choose a squad to go on the mission. After he had done this, Adel headed over to the hangar bay. He would be needing his mech for this mission.

"Good news everyone, we aren't going to die horribly in the next half hour." I 'said' happily, the tone was mor monotone then happy, but he had managed to get SOME emotional tone in there, so... Yeah, Progress.

"Well... Unless the ship explodes, but then that could happen anytime, so really, no worries." I added, completely destroying the mood.

One of the guy's passing near me asked "How can you be so... optimistic?"

"The power of positive thinking, if I think 'Everything will be Okay', it will be, if I think, 'Something bad is about to happen', it will. It's best to just try not to think about things you can't do anything about, and trust that the Captain and your Crew mates know what they're doing. They do what we can not do, and we do what they can not do, And right now you aren't doing anything, so back to work." I 'said'. He went back to checking the, I BELIEVE that that direction leads to the staircase to the fruit and vegetable section's of the FPS. Huh, a farmboy. I'll have to remember that.

I began to look over the container's the Otherspace Transceiver's where located in, they where still in line and SEEMED undisturbed, but what thing's seemed and what they are are usually two entirely different thing's. Best to open them up real quick to give the content's a once over, I'll have to hurry so I can get them sealed back up before we get to that Neelaa ship, I have 30 minute's, should be enough time, though we should wait a bit before having a mechanic go over it if he isn't here in time.

Can't risk leaving mission important stuff open during an operation involving the enemy.

"Dammit." Zeros groused, before firing up the Engineering Com-Link

"Adrallamech to engineers. We're currently preparing to board the Neela ship. Since we don't now what we'll be encountering, that nice long rest has been delayed. Furthermore, we need an engineer or two to join the boarding crew. As the situation is unknown, engineers affiliated with weapons or damage control are excluded form this missions, since it's quite possible for combat to break out. Interested engineers contact me on my personal channel."

Almost immediately, he received quite a few engineers interested in joining the team, no surprise considering that any change of pace would be a welcome relief from the endless checking and rechecking of the Seraphim.

"I kinda wish I could go too..." Zeros sighed. Well, at least things would be a bit more interesting now.

Seraphim's fusion drives were capable of accelerations of around 40+ gees. They had only been pushed to near their maximum potential under testing conditions, but combined with her gravity drive and the designers felt she would get up there without too much trouble.

At full burn, it was only an hour or two from the Sun to Earth. Seraphim was able to get there in under 50 minutes. A quick dispersal of her momentum with the gravity drive, and Seraphim was in a nice, high orbit above Big Sky.

Maya had been running a nearly constant analysis of all sensor data coming in for those fifty minutes, in case any Neelaa starships had appeared. While it was unlikely any had shown up in just two hours due to the distance involved, she wasn't taking any chances.

Her anxiety level would have lowered a bit if the Captain hadn't been pacing the bridge since they'd started, her curled tail and long ears making her a bit like a captive blue tigress.

She'd caught the captain's hesitation. She wasn't sure if anyone else had, but if they did, they didn't seem to show it. That was very nice of them, she thought.

Finally, they were close enough to get some useful telescope data, and Maya brought it up on the holographic projector system that created a screen in front of the captain's chair, but thanks to the design of the bridge was viewable by everyone.

The Neelaa ship was, like most other things the Neelaa made, a simple platonic solid-In this case a cylinder. It's hull was divided into segments of green, orange and black, and covered by an outer, nearly transparent armor layer. It had dug out a fair-sized gully, meaning it had crashed at a shallow angle.

"From the size and shape, it looks like a military transport," Maya reported dutifully. "Seems mostly intact. Landed only about a thousand miles east of the main colony, I think."

"What about it's engines?" Constance asked.

"The fusion reactors look like they're offline. Whether it's by damage or design, I don't know," Maya said.

"Ah, Captain?" The comms tech interjected. "Transmission from the planet below."

"Well, let's hear it," Constance said flatly. A burst of static later, and a man's gravelly voice came on over the bridge com.

"Seraphim, this is Barleston Central. Do you copy? Over?"

"This is Seraphim, we copy, to whom am I speaking? Over," Constance asked.

"I'm Governor Bill. It's nice to see an Earth ship again. Well, through my telescope I mean. Will you be coming down to visit? Over."

"Well, you happen to have a crashed starship in your backyard that we're going to have to get a look at. Over."

"Any danger to us? Over," Bill asked.

"We're not sure yet," Constance admitted. "But if you have anti-starship defenses, I suggest warming them up, just in case. Over."

"That bad huh? Over."

"Like I said, we don't know. We'll have some people coming down to check it out. Over," she replied.

"In the meantime then, your crew is free to enjoy our hospitality! Please, by all means, come down yourself! I would love to meet you face to face. Over."

Constance glanced at Graham. "I'd love to, time permitting. Over and out."

The comms tech closed the channel, and the captain sighed.

"Ms. Ibuki, anything at all?"

"Nothing ma'am."

"... All right. Tech, your name?"

"May, ma'am," Technician May reported.

"Start jamming the signal. Graham, I need you to watch the store for me."

#37
"Aye Captain...." Graham said, a little doubtfully. "But Captain, I must point out the possibility of this being a trap, and that Regulations state that in potentially hostile situations, the Captain should remain on the ship to take charge of the situation. Plus, Neetaani vessels might appear at any time."

Like Stubbs' excitement, it was obvious to all and sundry that under Lambert's citing of Rules and Regulations, was a deep concern for Constance.

#38
"I know," Constance replied. "But the distress call won't get a response from any of the local bases for a while, and this is the frontier for them as much as it is for us. And we do have a treaty..." Sort of she mentally amended.

"Besides... It would be rude to decline the invitation. And if things go a bit south, well..." She shrugged. "Have Fallax try out his special."

She turned. "You have the bridge, Commander. Get the landing party for the ship ready. And uh, get the Doctor. We're going to pay a visit."

#39
"Yes Captain." Graham said, nodding slowly, as he carried out her orders. He was clearly unhappy about it, but orders were orders, no matter how unpleasent they were.

"Doctor, ready search and rescue efforts, there may be casualties."

Yuuka couldn't help but smile a bit. They had just arrived and there was already work to be done. Granted, work on Neelaa, but work nonetheless. She was familiar with Neelaa biology and savored an opportunity to perform more tests.

She opened an old project on her PERCOMD - an experiment dating a few years back on Neelaa physiology she had to put on hold. Perhaps this would be a chance to finish it?

"...a Neelaa ship?" Nicole nervously read the updates on her PERCOMD. "Oh God..."

LeCartier quietly said something in French, while Mitchell stayed quiet.

"This can get ugly," Colin said, packing medical kits and tools. Out of all the medical staff, he was the only one with combat experience - particularly against the Neelaa.

And now they were being asked for prepare for a search-and-rescue effort.

"So...are we all going down there?" Nicole asked.

Colin sighed, thinking over the situation.

"A Neelaa ship with potential survivors, and a human colony?" Yuuka interrupted. "But of course, Mitchell and his slightly heavier-than-average muscle density to make up for his general ineptitude will more than suffice."

"...uh..." Michell tried to say something, but was at a loss for words. But, it did appear as though she commented quite favourably on his physical stature.

Nicole tried to speak, wondering what Yuuka was talking about.

"Sarcasm," Yuuka said, interrupting her. "Mr. Mitchell, Ms. van der Walt - you inability to detect it saddens me. We are all going down - possible survivors may be too much for a smaller team of just Colin and a few others to handle, and my expertise on Neelaa biology may be required directly on the ground."

Colin looked as though he was going to disagree, but he didn't. Begrudgingly, he let it go. He was concerned about Yuuka and Nicole going down with the others to a Neelaa vessel - seeing how they were noncombatants, as opposed to LeCartier, Mitchell, and himself who could at least handle action. Then again, a full medical team, backed up and protected by Espatiers, and with Yuuka's scientific and medical knowledge, would undoubtedly prove useful.

As well, Colin couldn't help but admit to himself - with Yuuka on the ground, Yuuka's safety was the least of his worries. He was actually worried more about what she had in store for any Neelaa survivors.

Colin saw her open that project. That couldn't be good.

The hanger deck was abuzz with activity, as Seraphim's two large transports, Mustangs, were being loaded up. Constance walked out, pulling on her away mission jacket and fitting her sidearm to her belt.

She spotted the quartermaster and with a smile walked up to him.

"How goes it Gaghi?"

Okay everything looks like it checks out...

My Visor bump's in a notification.

Hmm... Going with the Captain to see the governor... That sounds fun.

I'll send notification of my coming. Best grab two side arm's just in case.

"Everyone, It's time to move, someone grab one of the Otherspace Transceiver's and help me get it to the Hangar." I 'yelled'.

Time to get to work.

-----

"Everything's fine Captain." I 'Said' With a Salute.

#43
"Well, I'm going to go see the governor. We still need to set up their Otherspace transceiver," Constance replied. "But I don't want to waste a Mustang for that." She looked over at one of the Shinigami sitting nearby. "Could we carry the transceiver with one of the Shinigami?"

Hmm...

"Someone would have to sit back with it, but we could do it. Who's piloting?" I 'Said', I might have to get a few extra straps...

#45
"I need a good Espatier pilot, the sight of a man in uniform should be a nice sign to them... Especially given my appearance," Constance said, her tail swishing back and forth.

On the Bridge, there was a quiet hum of tension as the Captain went on her mission. Tension that was broken by Lambert leaning back and steepling his fingers. "Lt. Ibuki. Scan the crashed Neelaa vessel and pull up the details. I want to know what we're looking at here." he said, his voice slightly gruff with concern for the Captain.

#47
"Right sir..." Maya began inputting the data, reviewing various files. The Birrin often executed reconnaissance missions deep into Neelaa space while the bulk of the Sol fleet matched maneuvers with their opposite numbers. Though in reality, all the star nations of the Coalition (and the Tur-Han) did extensive espionage on the Neelaa, just as they did on them. Cold Wars were just that-Wars, but of a more shadowy sort.

"Well, it looks like a standard transport... I don't know if we've seen it before... Aha! I've got something!"

#48
"What do we have Maya?" he asked, standing and walking over to station. "Better be ready to patch it through to the Captain as well, just in case." he advised.

#49
"It looks like a transport out of Heinaa'leii," Maya reported, bringing up a map of one of the Neelaa's most heavily industrialized systems. "Standard general purpose transport, tagged as NGMT23571. Looks like it ran a lot of standard resupply missions back and forth between Neelaa Cwi and a few local military bases..." She frowned.

"Hmmm... That's odd."
