Here Here! I'm still in high school, but I'm luckily a senior, and I can't help but be disappointed with society. I grew up in Korea getting the majority of my morals and values there and now that I compare my view to others', I can't help but to wonder what went wrong with society.

The answer seems to be everything. It ranges from the mindless TV which the new generation seems to feed on like a newborn to his mother to the dangerous drug and attention seeking habits others have. Rap, MTV, and Reality shows have contributed to society's fall heavily.
Ugh, don't even get me started on what's on TV these days, the only thing I watch on TV now is House M.D. every Tuesday at 8 and that's it, otherwise I haven't watched TV for about two years now, any series that I want to see I can buy on DVD or just download it (which I've done many times) so there just really seems to be no point in turning on the TV at all these days.

Really, what seems to be happening to our culture is, at its basest levels, a complete atrophy and decay of our morals and sense of decency, everything is immediate gratification, everyone wants something and they want it NOW! People have forgotten the value of patience as well as losing most of what is usually referred to as 'common sense'. Though one of the biggest things it seems people have forgotten is simply how to have a shred of kindness and empathy in them, people are too wrapped up in their own lives to give a damn about anybody else, it will not be the bomb that destroys us but the cancer of apathy that festers malignantly within us. What sets humans apart from the rest of the animals in the world our ability to reason and feel emotions greater than simple like or dislike, to be able to use logic instead of instinct to understand and make decisions upon, what our society is doing now is slowly but surely disregarding all of this and returning to their base animal instincts but with one new, malevolent one added in, just for us, the need to have power and control. Because, if you think about it, that's all that popular culture panders too, our base animal instincts, with sex, violence, and food. Essentially we're degrading, evolutionally anyway.

Nowadays, all of our cultural aspects are rather lacking. All of our new books aren't masterpieces, but are rather plot-driven stories designed to just make money. There are virtually no original movie ideas, and no noteworthy paintings or poems have been made. Really, all there are are the Gangsta rap songs, and the Emo or heavy Rock bands. It's disappointing because there is no imagination anymore. The little memoirs online are full of crap. People don't know how to express themselves anymore.

Morals are going downhill along with just about every good thing in this world. Really, it's just a matter of time until we all wipe ourselves out and really, as morbid as it is, I can't help but to think that the world will actually prosper from this. All I can hope for is a cultural revival like the world Renaissance that took place before
It's sad to think that we may have all ready passed the peak of art and literature and that we are now merely in the following downward spiral but it does hold much possibility as, while there are still some good books being written and beautiful songs being performed, it's just not up to the standard that it used to be, as you said, there are no more masterpieces being made. And while we can only hope and prey for another 'Renaissance' I honestly don't believe humanity will last to see the year 2100, if that, honestly I'm questioning whether I might not be witness to the end of humanity. That's quite the sobering thought isn't it, that we might be witnessing the human races last dying spasms right now as we go about our daily lives.

Oh, and as for things like Myspace, Xanga, Blogs, and other such things, as far as I'm concerned those are just mediums used by people so desperate for attention, acceptance, and affection that they are willing to put massive amounts of personal information up for perusal by any random stranger.

Anyway, glad to see that you've finally deigned to come out of lurker-dom Curious Stranger, not to mention reviving one of my old threads, so, on behalf of TFF, welcome to the board.

Thanks a lot for the greeting Israfel. To be honest, I've been looking around forums and livejournals of actually interesting people for a bit and this was the first really interesting thing that caught my eye. I mostly stay away from rants, but I had to make an exception for this.

Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but I really think that humans can pull themselves out of this pit of misery. *sigh* Of course I'm probably very wrong about this. You've got to admit though, if humans see a threat to their existence, more often than not, they will do something about it as pathetic as those attempts may be.

Again, thanks for the greeting.

By the way, House M.D. freaking rocks. I can't believe I missed the 3rd season premiere. *Goes and strangles a nearby clown*

Ubi sunt.

I could say more, but I don't particularly feel like indulging in the Emo Side of the Force right now.

Suffice it to say, modern music sucks, reality shows ruin everything they touch, and MTV is to blame for both.

To be fair, when MTv began Real World and Road Rules they were not completely made of fail.

Unfortunately both shows wore out their welcome.

And MTv used to actually *mean* "Music Television". It wasn't always as shit as it has been for the last ten years or so.

It always sucked in my book.

My point is a bit different than that alone.

See, back when MTv first started up, there were a lot of talented rock and metal acts. When MTv came along, fans across the nation got a much better look at just how hideous their favorite bands looked. That wasn't such a problem for many acts, but it also brought about a popularity contest.
In short order, music became less about what the band plays and more about how hot the band's image is. Thus were ushered in the Glam Metal no-talent hacks that jaded the public so much on metal that real talent like Sabbath, Priest, and their ilk were largely forgotten or ignored.
Rock has never recovered. I can't even listen to "classic rock" radio stations without being assaulted five times an hour with Def Leppard's sugarcoated, generic, overproduced shite.

Just my luck to have been born in the wrong decade and miss the boat on good music.

...of course, the rational cynic in me says that no matter what era one is born in, the one that just went by looks like a social/moral high ground. No such thing as satisfaction.

Well, I think each of them had two or three good seasons apiece, at the beginning. After that, the idea was no longer new; just the casts.

But I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, since probably neither of us is going to budge.

True, I'll agree with you on that, but I will also maintain that, as hard as they are to find, there are still good bands out there and decent music is still being made, you've just got to look a bit harder for it, but it's there. Though I will never understand what people see in a many 'classic rock' bands, as things like The Doors and most Pink Floyd stuff just doesn't work for me, but I suppose that's just personal oppinion.

I still think that Queen is one of the best bands in the 1900-2000 period...

and that humanity is slowly descending into hell...

we're doomed soon anyways with this crap that keeps coming up with Bin Laden and all the rubbish about those nuclear bombs and stuff.

I usually present rather wild ideas into fanfiction, which usually are deemed not worthy by the entire people on this board, but i have to say that it pains me to see that if some irritating jackass were to get a hold of them, that the world would die...

Rennaisance... i'd like to see it back... gimme those trebuchets and stuff, those old flying machines by Leonardo! gimme gimme gimme...

bring back the swords, bring back the bows! cast down the technology which makes us slaves to the machines!

I like classical music, and love to go to organ concerts, or of those concerts with a huge orchestra... i simply love to feel the music through my bones and feel content when listening to it...

the worst thing is that i am usually the youngest person by at least 20 years to come there...

believe me, i see a lot of grey and white hair at those concerts...

people these days don't know what good music is...

take Micheal jackson for instance... his music was good, before he turned white...

or take Queen, who didn't produce anything after the death of Freddie, except for a greatest hits album or something...

or take Star Wars, which is still good to watch...

sorry about my ranting Israfel, just remembering the good things before the heretic music of this era...

I am 18 years old by the way...

:flameon: to Spice Girls...

Eh, no biggie, it is a Rant section after all, my personal rant section, but a rant section nonetheless.

Wow, it's been a long while since I last visited this topic. ^_^

Pink Floyd is just one of those "strange" acts, who have many songs that you either love or can't stand, it seems. Personally, I like a few Floyd songs, but not the whole lot of them.

Queen was, is, and always will be great. They haven't reunited as "Queen" since Freddie's death, simply because without him, the nature of the band's musical dynamic changes on such a level that, if anyone else stepped in to fill the open spot, it wouldn't really be Queen.
Greatest Hits albums are really just recompilations of several of the most well-known and/or successful songs in a band's library. They occasionally digitally remaster the audio, and that usually spawns a new Greatest Hits album.
Personally, I'd rather they just release the entire Queen song library on CD. I'd buy that right quick!

My own musical tastes vary wildly with my mood. Sometimes it's Techno, sometimes Rap/Hip-hop. Sometimes I feel like Classical, or Opera, or even Country Western. (Rest well, Johnny Cash.) Eclectic is the name of the game for me.
But, I'll always return to Rock. It's where my heart is.

Yah, true true, pretty much everything above is roughly my oppinion as well.

Heh, yah, I know that feeling, I go from Death Metal, to Opera, to Rap, to Classical, to J-Pop, to Country, and then on into another one of Metal's various sub-categories, I have enough music on my PC that you could play it all and you would not repeat a single track for nearly a week. I could run my own raido station if I wanted to, though it would be one hell of a wierd station with a song selection like that on it.
