This thread is to discuss comics from Companies other than the "Dynamic Duo" of Marvel and DC, and recommend any comic series you feel people should be reading.

From Valient:

Bloodshot:

I just finished reading a few issues and found it interesting. Without giving too much away, a trained government soldier finds reason to believe that the life he thought he had was a lie and goes off the reservation to find the truth. Said Agent also has some kind of nano machines that can repair damage, communicate with tech, and change his face for a limited time. Downside is they require protein to work so he decimated a live cow once when his reserves were running low.

I like the characters and I like the universe and will keep an eye on this one.

Irredeemable by Mark Waid.

Summary: The world's greatest superhero, The Plutonian, pulls a Face-Hell Turn and becomes the world's greatest supervillain. The series follows the Plutonian's former teammates, The Paradigm, as they try to stop him and save as many lives as possible.

It's essentially 'Superman turns EVIL', but it's still a good read, with good artwork, fine writing, and a interesting spin on the genre.

Also from Valiant I will recommend Archer and Armstrong, the ongoing adventures of an ancient babylonian drunkard/poet and his Psiot tyke-bomb sidekick

Also if you like Star Wars then I'll recommend pretty much ANY and ALL of Darkhorses Star Wars: Legacy and Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi. The former shows us the Galaxy 100 or so years after the movies and features for its majority the most anti-heroic Skywalker I've seen who isn't a villain. The latter shows us the ancient origins of the Jedi Order from its predecessor order as the Rakatan INfinite Empire begins its invasion of the Force Rich world of Tython.

Magnus: Robot Fighter. It has an interesting set up, and I like that Magnus was raised in a world alien to the one he wakes up in. I will keep an eye on this.

An interesting story, this version of Turok has no real love for most of the village, living on the outskirts as he does, however the arrival of dinosaur riding Brits changes the situation somewhat. I am highly curious to see where this one goes.

I just read Cyber Force Vol. 1: Rebirth.

While interesting in its own right, I felt a little lost in the fact that half of the original team was whacked in five pages, the art looks more like Witchblade gone wild, and the storyline is a bit... movie adaption-ish. Here
Ripclaw and Cyblade are husband-wife with a kid, and said kid, along with Cyblade, Heatwave, and Impact die in an ambush by SHOC troops. Velocity just happens to be Stryker's illegitimate daughter that he unknowingly fathered with the chairwoman of CDI aka the most powerful woman in the world, who's secretly chessmastering against her husband's Aphrodite Protocol [insert standard eradicating all life and remaking the world in man's image schtick here] through covert feeding Stryker intel via his old cyberhound which was made Velocity's pet. Aphrodite IX also appears in this reboot even though I don't think she had any connections to Cyberforce, aside both being from Top Cow, which begs the question, why not draft in Sara Pezzini and/or Jackie Estacado. No Mother-May-I, no mutants, no bio powers, just regular humans that managed to survive the first gen cybernetic installations. And a good number of the remaining cast die or are implied to be dead at the end of the first five issues.

I'm sure people not familiar with Cyberforce and like something a bit more gritty and closer to realism would likely enjoy this reboot. For those that do have some knowledge of the original series and/or favorite characters, well, it's bound to throw some for a loop. It's not bad, per se, but you might find yourself wondering was it really necessary to basically wipe out everything that made Cyber Force who they were before the reboot.

Has the fact that Ripclaw was once engaged to Jenny, the one good thing in Jackie Estacado's life growing up, before she was murdered ever come up again? I ask because the only place I ever saw that concept used was in the crossover that introduced it. I mean, Jackie's response was to go Total War on the guy responsible and commit suicide in the process, but we never saw Ripclaw's response. And now that time and space have been reordered such that Jenny is alive again and married to Jackie I'm wondering if that plot point has just been quietly eradicated from continuity.

So, as the OP states this is the Non-DC/Marvel discussion thread I thought I'd bring up this week's Invincible. Shit Went Down. I'll spoiler tag it though out of politeness.

Mark successfully returns from his extradimensional imprisonment (caused by one of his oldest friends betraying him) and immediately makes a bee-line for his Fiancee Eve. Only to find out he's been gone for 6 months on this side and that she's basically decided to break up with him as a result of his constant getting dragged off into extra-terriestrial bs for months on end while she's pregnant (for those not aware she is as of return 8-9 months pregnant and this is her second pregnancy with him and she aborted the first one because he disappeared for the better part of a year and she didn't know whether he was alive or dead). Following this massive bombshell Mark reels from the impact and runs into his pushy female Viltrumite suitor. She refuses to take no for an answer, beats the shit out of him while he's emotionally wrecked and unwilling to fight and then proceeds TO RAPE HIM (shown on panel but with discretion shots and editing). The issue ends with him on his knees mostly naked just totally out of it at what the hell his life has become.

It's pretty messed up.

... Wow. That's just incredibly fucked up. I don't follow the series, but maybe I'll pick up a couple of the trades to give it a shot. (This is the superhero with the blue, black, and yellow costume, right?)

Yup, by Kirkman if that helps, same guy who did/does Walking Dead. This was his first book and Invincible has been the Image Mascot somewhat.

Yeah... wow... I really need to get back to reading that again. I hadn't read past the point where Mark returned to work for Cecil, due to how badly he mishandled Dinosaurus and let him kill millions in his quest to protect the earth (well, Mark was suffering from the aftereffects of the Scourge Virus, and wasn't in any condition to keep him in check).

Also, an aside note, the Comicvine page on Dinosaurus is grossly out of date, as it doesn't go past the point of Dinosaurus saving Mark from the Emperor.

I'm sorta sad that they're cancelling Invincible Universe. I think it's related to the fact that the artist is now working for marvel on Nightcrawler. Best Tiger is BEST Tiger.

Just read the latest issue of 'Turok' by Greg Pak....When a Chief dies Turok's people kill his greatest enemies and all their family, burying them along side the fallen chief...which cuts down on the assassination attempts. Brutal....but admittedly effective.

For those enjoying Turok: Epicenter Comics is currently publishing in the ol' U.S. of A. the Italian western-themed series "Magic Wind"(Magico Vento) and, starting from July, the goddamn ZAGOR.

Zagor(shortened form of his indian nickname: Za-gor-te-nay "the spirit with the hatchet") is a white guy with a hatchet in the western woods of the XIX century United States. No powers whatsoever. Epicenter Comics is going to publish a full-colour selection of stories, from the Italian 500+ monthly issues(also 27 annuals and a number of special issues) Bonelli published since 1961

First issue by Epicenter Comics: Zagor vs Dagon and the Deep Ones.
(Didn't I mention he fights extraterrestials every here and then?)

Apparently Mark Waid is writing an Archie reboot....yes you read that correctly....It's actually pretty good so far.

Yes, the first issue is already out. It has been good enough, and Waid got the most important part right: Jughead.
Ah, there will be a Betty&Veronica title by Terry Dodson.
