well, I'd like to make it so he can pick up pretty much any instrument and play, but I was thinking of making his specialties the harp, japanese flute and piano.
Is there a piano at the Hinata Sou? If not, will he get one?

A harp and Japanese flute are pretty easy to carry around, but I don't remember if there was a Piano at the Hinata and if there isn't then when will he ever get the chance to play one?

I don't mean to sound rude. It's just I like that he's been using small, portable instruments so far. It fits the bard persona much better, and runs less chance of getting completely trashed if he winds up getting slugged (if indeed that happens to him in this story).

I think the question is, is the theme "Keitaro with unusual powers" or is it "Keitaro as a Bard class"?
For the unusual powers version it wouldn't be that strange for some admirer to send a piano and whatever instruments might be needed, although I can't see Keitaro asking someone for them. If its the Bard version then it would be strange for Keitaro to have anything larger than a saxophone, and it'd be even stranger for Keitaro to ever let his items out of his sight.

the piano is more because I guess I want keitato to have a favourite instrument that doesn't cause more than abnormal chaos when he plays it, they'll still be an effect simply because he's that good of a musician but because the sound on a piano is produced mostly from the key mechanism in the piano rather than physically touching the strings for a violin or a harp, or supplying the air like the flute there should be less "funky shit" so to speak and he can enjoy himself without worrying about stunning people when he bangs the keys in fustration

Now I'm imagining Keitaro hammering out Beethoven's Fifth (I think that's the right one) and everyone in the house having to hold onto something because they feel like there's an earthquake :snigger:

You do know that harpists may use a set of picks mounted on what seem to be thimbles, right? And the piano keeping Keitaro from having funky shit happen doesn't really float. He's still in contact with the instrument.

Besides, giving him a piano is about the same as handing him an electronic keyboard. I just don't see him safely carrying that around, and those things are fucking heavy depending on the model.

Well if you've looked at a piano's key mechanism you'll see that the sound production is fairly uniform, the hammers hit the strings at the same place everytime for everyone, so no matter who touches the keys or how they are pressed the same string is hit in the same way, you can alter the volume by changing the force with which you hit the key but not the pitch. However for string instruments each player puts his fingers on the string at minutly unique positions and stums the bow slightly differently so there is variation there, even with the harp with the picks, where you strum on the string and how you do so can effect the harmonic waveform of the sound produced. I guess I'm trying to make the power come from the waveform of the note rather than keitaro's presence, so a completely electronically synthesised instrument would be completely safe from universe alterting fun.

I'd suggest that the effect get carried over, but at a significantly reduced level. That way Keitaro can cut loose a little without completely screwing up everything, but he still has to keep it in check a bit, so he goes all out when everyone is gone. This would enable Keitaro to catch their interest since he has something almost no one else does, without causing a riot every time he plays a song.

Or you could just have him install a soundproof room, but where's the fun in that?

Random Idea: Rather than the various part time jobs he always ends up with, he could play at a bar, restaurant, or even teach private music lessons. He's go the talent for any of those jobs, and I can't see him selling cell phones when he can make some money doing something he loves. It could open up a few more possible interactions with the girls outside of the Inn, or give him a bit of a fan club.

Don't forget the footpedals on the piano. If I recall correctly, those handle some of the pitch and tone. Mostly, I think they act as volume control. You're looking at a more prolonged contact with Keitaro, since his feet would likely be on the pedals during a performance.

Anyway, zerohour does have a good idea on how this can be resolved. Keyboard/piano has a bit of a reduced effect compared to other instruments, but only enough so Keitaro doesn't get jumped at random moments.

Now I'm seeing him with a six-to-eight keyboard setup all tuned to different instruments jamming out something beyond awesome. :snigger:

And now you've reminded me of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, especially the part with Beethoven playing several keyboards at once in a mall. That's pounding out something beyond awesome right there.

That scene annoyed me. Here he was, giving them great music, and free advertizing and attention... and they arrest him.

Morons. They should have tried hiring him.

Oh well.

It should, that's where the idea came from :p

If anybody doesn't know, the song that's playing right then is called 'Play With Me'. Which is rockin'

I'd love to see what would happen if Keitaro got on stage with an electric guitar somewhere. Crowds go wild for regular artists.

The rock music inspires youthful energy and rebellious attitudes, leading the police to take into custody with hilarious results? Practicing Peace of Mind during a major business event resulting in a sudden lack of old Japanese businessmen and a growth of Buddhist monks?
Can anyone think of an anti-corruption song he could play during a political event leading to mass confessions by elderly politicians?

War Pigs by Black Sabbath :p

'cept he'd need someone for the vocals.
