A certain amount of secrecy is necessary when taking over the world. Hakase Satomi had come to expect that. She even understood that despite being ChaoÆs right hand, she would only receive information on a need-to-know basis. She couldnÆt muster a single complaint about that if she tried.

She did object however, to not being informed about the entire plan being scrapped, and a new one drawn from scratch a week before deadline. She could have at least been told before the Tank-Alphas were put into production. What were they going to do the battalions they had already created?

Setting aside amusing thoughts for uses of a massive robot army aside, Hakase had to admit that the new plan sounded like rubbish. Even thinking about who she garnered the idea from sent chills down her spine. There had to be some other reason for this change in plans, something Chao felt needed to be kept hidden even from her. After two years of plotting, scheming and preparing alongside her comrade, Hakase Satomi could come to only one conclusion: Chao had too many secrets for her own good.

The resident mad scientist released her frustrations on one of her pens, clicking it frantically as she made her way down an eerily sanitary sewer passageway. The passages had always baffled the researcher, they didnÆt even smell! It wasnÆt a bad thing. There was no way their plan or hideout could have remained a secret if they constantly reeked.

ôSomething troubling you?ö her senior partner in crime asked as Hakase arrived at the control room.

ôYou bet there is!ö Satomi barked, slamming her clipboard against an old scavenged desk. ôThis new plan is insane, even by my standards!ö

ôThereÆs a good reason for it-ne!ö Chao grinned. The mysterious girlÆs æI know something you donÆt knowÆ attitude grated on Hakase at times, especially because it was true.

ôWell would you mind telling me! And what are we going to do with all those Tanakas we have since someone neglected to tell me we wouldnÆt need them? Not to mention-ö HakaseÆs rant was cut off as Chao handed her a rather large binder.

ôI never said we wouldnÆt need them-ne.ö Chao offered as Hakase flipped through the new plan.

ô3-AÆs second war of lips? How would-ö

ôRemember the simulations for our ultimate weapon?ö Chao chuckled as she studied her colleagueÆs face while the other girl put two and two together. With a reassuring pat on her friendÆs shoulder, the slightly less sane scientist left the control room. Hakase quickly made herself comfortable and began going over the revised plan for the first time.

As she flipped the first few pages, she began to wonder if selling her soul for science was everything it was hyped up to be.

This idea has already spawned three possibilities (at least in my mind) for the future. This little snippet, therefore, is pure brain-candy. I'd like to see where you go with this.

Asuna let out a mighty yawn as she shambled back to her dorm room. She had had a rough day in class, and the previous night was spent helping put up 3-AÆs horror house. Somehow, stumbling about in the dark wielding hammers, hacksaws and paintbrushes wasnÆt her idea of a good time. Even worse, she had papers to deliver the next morning.

Despite all the hassle, she had been secretly grateful through the week for an excuse to put off calling Takahata-sensei. She wanted to spend the festival with him more than anything, but the odds of that compared unfavorably to snow flurries in hell. Konoka, and to a lesser extent Negi, had been nagging her to talk to the object of her affections.

Of course none of that mattered now though, she was clearly no competition for Shizuna-sensei. Images of the two together had haunted her throughout the day. Asuna couldnÆt even find an objection within her after all, why would he go for some barely pubescent waif when he could go for someone older, understanding and stylish? A part of her whispered that there was still hope, but it was drowned by the cacophony of self-depreciation.

Asuna lightly banged her head against the door to her room and let it rest there as she had on occasion when she felt overly frustrated from work or school. Despite a long series of disappointments, this was the first time she had done it for matters of love, she reflected.

It felt odd though, something had been taped to the door, keeping her from the cool familiar sensation. It was another advertisement. Although outsiders werenÆt allowed in the dorms, occasionally some student with a part-time job would post fliers around the building. Asuna didnÆt even glance at it as she tore it from the wall and crumpled it between her fingers. Her moment of relaxation ruined, the girl flung open the door and tossed the ad on her desk. Detached from her surroundings, Asuna climbed up to her bunk and screwed her eyes shut in a vain attempt to catch a few winks before having to get up early and deliver newspapers.

ôAsuna! You canÆt sleep in your uniform itÆll get wrinkled!ö Konoka chided gently. The auburn-haired girl had previously been oblivious to her roommateÆs presence, and as she focused her eyes, Asuna saw Setsuna sitting near the headmasterÆs granddaughter vigilantly as always.

AsunaÆs mumbled a reply, too ragged to even recognize the words trying to come out of her own mouth. Undaunted, Konoka began cleaning the minor mess her roommate had left her. As she scooped up the notice Asuna had tossed aside, curiosity forced her to open and take a look at whatever new business decided to open up.

A few moments later in the corner of her eye Asuna spotted a blurry Konoka leaping to SetsunaÆs side, thrusting the crumpled paper into her bodyguardÆs face. To Asuna their conversation, while excited was as scrambled as her earlier reply. The exhausted girlÆs eyes focused, seeing a flustered ShinmeiryuuÆs face turn beet red. A second later, Konoka dashed to AsunaÆs side, forcing her to read the announcement for the festival. Despite her fatigue, the young woman could read the header easily enough.

ôMahora FestivalÆs War for Negi SpringfieldÆs Lips!ö the slip of paper read. ôFirst prize: 100,000,000 yen.ö

100,000,000 Yen is $964,155.02, as of about a minute ago. Also 615,409.41 Euros, and 489,985.82 Pounds Sterling. :jawdrop:

Chao has a damn huge operating budget, there.

Interesting part.

Thank you for updating.

More soon, please.

Oh lord, poor Negi.

She just turned all his allies into enemies save for maybe Asuna

Oh hell... I think this one will actually work better.

Sorry for the lack of updates, as an apology this one's extra long.

Negi flinched as he resisted the sudden urge to frantically scratch himself as he felt the magical energies in his body slowly siphon out and flow into precisely crafted and well-hidden talismans. The headmasterÆs office was one of the most heavily warded places in Asia, and whoever fortified it didnÆt seem to be concerned with the comfort of the people inside. Still itching like crazy, Negi approached the small crowd gathering around the elder KonoeÆs desk. The old man was surrounded by several people, only some of whom Negi had spoken to before.

ôYou!ö An unfamiliar voice shouted at the boy. NegiÆs eyes fixated on a blonde girl in her teens rushing up to him. ôHow could you agree to something like this! DonÆt you irresponsible thatàthatàö the girlÆs voice grew more sluggish and trailed off as she began to raise her hand, then staggered off to the side as the siphons kicked into full gear around the angered schoolgirl, draining any desire to harm the child as well as a goodly chunk of her reserves.

ôTakane, thereÆs no need for that.ö The elderly headmaster assured her. ôHave a seat young one.ö Negi nodded silently as he pulled up a chair. The moment he began to relax against the backrest, the group surrounding the old man appeared on his flanks. With the evening sun shining through the window into his eyes, the whole affair seemed like a police interrogation.

ôBoy,ö the headmasterÆs voice took a commanding tone the moment he could feel NegiÆs unease. The lad tensed up further. He was prepared for a thousand different answers, most of which ended with the termination of his position.

ôI need you to participate in this event.ö The old man said as he lightly stroked his beard.

Negi was not prepared for that response. Neither were most of the other occupants, Negi managed to observe.

ôThere are several reasons for this, my boy. First off, the girl has always been a thorn in our side, sticking her nose in places it shouldnÆt be and such. It doesnÆt take a genius to figure out that sheÆs got something even bigger than this event planned. We will have a better chance of putting a stop to all this nonsense if you play along for the time being. That girl may not be aware of it, but this event may help us with another situation with the world treeàö the old man stopped as he considered how much to reveal to the youngster. ôIt seems IÆm getting ahead of myself. Right now I need to ask you some questions about Chao, starting from when you first met.ö

Negi nodded as he prepared to answer the elderÆs questions. It was going to be a long day.

To say the upcoming event had caused a stir in Mahora would have been a gross understatement. From the youngest kindergartner to the most mature collage wastrel, a wave of obsession had washed over the entire city by the end of the day.

Closer examination of the rules for the event dampened more than a few peopleÆs enthusiasm; faculty members, males, and non-students werenÆt eligible to participate. A few more enterprising individuals also understood that only walking away with a million or ten certainly beat walking away empty-handed and started to form teams for the upcoming event.

The idea hadnÆt quite caught on everywhere, not a soul in 3-A had even considered the idea of making teams. Of course to some students, a kiss from their beloved Negi-sensei held far more value than mere money, and that didnÆt split quite the way cash did. It was a situation that A certain mad scientist felt needed some rectifying.

ôTalk, rodent.ö SetsunaÆs voice was deadpan, her voice displaying no emotion. She didnÆt need to, her crushing grip telling her captive everything it needed to know. ôbefore I hand you over to Asuna when she wakes up.ö

ôSe-chan, I donÆt think heÆll be able to talk if you squeeze him like that.ö Konoka suggested, loosening the swordswomanÆs grip with each gentle coax.

ôThank you, ane-sa-ô KamoÆs thanks were cut short as he yelped in pain, then began to squirm as he struggled to draw breath.

ôDonÆt talk to her.ö Setsuna accented her demand with a squeeze. ôYou and Asakura were behind the last one, donÆt tell me you two have nothing to do with this.ö

ôI didnÆt! I swear!ö the ermine sputtered.

The small verminÆs life was saved as the door opened to reveal Mahora FestivalÆs newly appointed center of attention. æHe looks about as ragged as Asuna had when she arrived.Æ Setsuna noted.

ôAre you okay?ö Konoka immediately began fussing over Negi as soon as he entered the dorm. The boy took a seat at the table and began to explain his situation, as well as some of the new rules of the contest.

Six spots around the world tree had begun overflowing with magical energies. Shizuna and Takahata had contacted the mad scientist and expressed the schoolÆs desire to work together. To everyoneÆs pleasant surprise, the rules of the competition had managed to be The faculty wanted Chao to declare those ôsafe zonesö off limits to everyone save Negi. The boy could hide there for a few minutes without fear of having his lips ravaged by the first passerby. There was also as set amount of time before he could enter another zone, as well as a five minute head start when he left each safe zone.

There were other issues as well, certain legal agreements, liability and whatnot. Negi couldnÆt remember most of it.

Right now, all he cared about was sleep.

Ten empty soda cans lay scattered across a brick fence. To most, they were just litter one could find strewn across any urban landscape. Thanks to careful choices by someone, no one was there to witness one of the cans rocketing into the air, briefly experiencing the glory of flight for a few seconds before plummeting back to the earth unceremoniously.

Slightly more than a kilometer away, Tatsumiya Mana chambered another round and checked the wind. Once she was satisfied that it had died down to a more reasonable velocity, Mana set another can in her crosshairs. The mercenary set up a makeshift range whenever she needed to blow off steam.

A sniper may need patience in spades, but her client just crossed the line. Canceling while the ink on the contract was still wet wasnÆt something the merc took lightly.

ôItÆs not like you to sulk-ne!ö Lingshen chided, throwing off the sniperÆs concentration.

ôIÆm not sulking.ö Mana replied as she flicked the rifleÆs safety and lifted it off its perch. The mercenaryÆs eyes narrowed when she saw who was accompanying her ex-employer.

ôIt looked like you were.ö Asakura Kazumi chimed in. ôSurprised to see me?ö

ôOn the contrary, I was about to go looking for you after my associate here stopped sulking.ö Chao offered.

ôIÆm not sulking!ö Mana grumbled. ôWhat are you doing here Kazumi?ö

ôIÆm just trying to find out why a certain someoneÆs stealing some of my best material.ö Kazumi replied as she leaned against a tree. ManaÆs instincts told her the reporter didnÆt choose that particular position at random, it provided the best vantage to watch both Mana and Chao while providing nearby cover. Asakura couldnÆt even hope to take Mana on if the mercenary were placed in a straighjacket and blindfolded, but Tatsumiya didnÆt like being outmaneuvered.

ôYou two seem awfully ungrateful for two people about to get the job offers of a lifetime-ne!ö the insane genius announced with a grin.

ôI donÆt see why I should be grateful to someone who pulls the plug on a job without telling me.ö ManaÆs thumb returned to the safety out of habit.

ôFire you? IÆm doing nothing of the sort!ö Chao returned with mock surprise. ôIÆm just here to tell you that things have changed. I still need your expertise even more for this plan to work!ö

ôHow so?ö

ôWell, itÆll be no fun if the event is over on the first day-ne? I need you to make certain the event lasts until the final day. As for Kazumi-san, I thought youÆd be flattered that IÆd make use one of your better ideas!ö

ôMy æbetter ideas?Æö The paparazzi girl was nonplussed with the excuse.

ôWell, for something like this weÆre still going to need quite a bit of media coverage-ne? ItÆs already big news all over the campus, and I was willing to grant you exclusive coverage of the event, and acting as announcer throughout the festival- but if youÆre that upset about itàö Chao suggested. The reporterÆs face hadnÆt flinched, but the scientist could see the girlÆs eyes light up.

ôWell telling everyone that weÆre going to cancel would probably start a small riot at this point.ö Kazumi conceded.

Mana collapsed the rifleÆs bipod as she prepared to place it back into her guitar case as Chao continued. She had killzones to scout, weather to chart, scopes to zero in, weapons to oil and dozens of other preparations to make. æIÆm not the only one from the looks of it.Æ The gunslinger thought as she watched Chao give her best sales pitch to Kazumi.

ôOne more thing,ö Chao announced loudly as Mana continued packing. ôJust because you two are working for me doesnÆt mean that IÆm going to declare you two exempt from the competition. Call it an added incentive.ö

ManaÆs thumb instictively depressed the rifleÆs safety, setting it firmly to the æoffÆ position.

...So Mana's in it to win it? Why oh why does Negi surround himself with so many aggressive women? Well, at least things are getting interesting. I'm happy to see more of this. I enjoyed it a lot.

Also, this is the one mistake I noticed:

ôFire you? IÆm doing nothing of the sort!ö Chao returned with mock surprise. ôIÆm just here to tell you that things have changed. I still need your expertise even more for this plan to work!ö
The part in bold is kind of awkward. I recommend you change it to "I need your expertise even more" or "I still need your expertise" depending on exactly what you're trying to convey.

I can't wait to see more. ^_^

Another problem is the way you keep on calling Chao an insane genius. Wrong girl, Hakase would the cracked one. Chao is remarkably balanced.
