Some time ago I finished reading the light novel = "Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss But I'm Not the Demon Lord"
The canon story itself was very satisfactory, but I want to get into the habit of fanfic writing again. So this is going to be a spoiler-full thread of random thoughts from the books and some ideas that I have floating in my head. The objective is that, well, if something pops up that I like, I might actually write another fanfic story.
Again - these are random thoughts or ideas floating in my head. No promises or commitments that an actual fanfic will emerge.
With that preamble out of the way - let's begin.
Hmm... what do I like about the canon plot? I like the fact that the canon shipping actually sails. Sure, there is a comical element to how Yumiella and Patrick interact - especially with how Yumiella is shy about admitting things - but she does not actively deny her feelings like an over-the-top Tsundere. I find that very refreshing. Speaking of which, Patrick's patience is amazing. There are so, so many BURNS that Yumiella does to him (un-intentionally), but he still sticks with her.
Not sure if I want to attempt repeating all that. And I don't think I want to write Yumiella as a Tsundere either. What other options are there?
Canonically, he falls head-over-heels for her. I think he verbally admits this to another individual in volume 3, but the fact that he goes out of his way to level up in volume 1, shows that he's aware of his own feelings. As for Yumiella herself, I think she slowly realises in volume 1 that she likes him, but most definitely cements that in volume 2 when she proposes visiting his parents to get them engaged.
Hmm... why not have her chase him down? It might be an interesting twist on things - but I don't think it would work with her single-minded canon character. So that would need to change. Speaking of which, for an isekai'd individual - she's odd. The novel uses the excuse that she's a gamer to explain why she's so hell-bend on leveling up and as someone who plays games, I do understand that - but as a goal in and of itself? Like, sure there are folk who do that ... but ... no. I don't want to go down that route. Which means we'll need to change her character too.
Her being obsessed with leveling up is a central point to her personality - so I'll keep that around, but another goal she had was to try and be inconspicuous. As in - to not be noticed by those around her. Why not give her enough emotional intelligence to actually accomplish that? Which might mean in the initial scene the level-measuring device would NOT announce her to be at level 99.
If we go down that route, a lot of the interactions Yumiella had with the original cast goes out the window. Canonically, the *only* reason most folk paid her any attention was because they knew her to be an over-powered monster. If she hid that, the "original" plot of the otome game should proceed - with the usual heroine teaming up to defeat the Demon Lord.
Hmm... that might be a fun story to write - what might such a story look like? At least, from Yumiella's and Patrick's point-of-view?
Actually - would Patrick even be a part of that story? He *is* shown to be a prodigy by being the only student to reach double digit (level 10) in the initial level-measuring event, but the fact that he's not considered to be part of the Demon Lord subjugation team means, at best, he's some kind of side character.
Why not make him as another isekai'd character? That might be a fun hook. In the canon story, the reason why (or how?) Yumiella gets brought into the world is explored in volume 3. Basically - an other-worldly entity got bored and wanted to change things. Might keep that the same. But for Patrick? Hmm... why not have him be brought in to just help fight against the Demon Lord? It would give him an excuse to level up and stuff.
I think I like that idea. i.e. due to some event, someone in our world dies, meets a divine entity, complains about how he never got to live a fulfilling life and gets send to this world instead. Kind of like Konosuba, but instead of flubbing things like Kazuma did, it's played straight. Then, we can follow the story of Patrick building himself up to solo the Demon Lord in secret, but Yumiella notices and starts observing him. He finds her suspicious (could be fun if he had knowledge of the "original" game and sees her as an optional "evil" boss).
That might be fun, actually. i.e. from Patrick's point-of-view, the world is some kind of RPG where he's a side-character who tries to secretly help the original cast, but from Yumiella's point-of-view, the world is an otome game and Patrick is behaving off-script at some strange points.
I need to re-read volume 1 again. Need to summarise what the "canon" events in the "original" game where. Actually - what was it even called again? Ah - "Light Magic and the Hero". Or LMH as it's abbreviated in the light novel.
This ramble is long enough now.
