Some time ago I finished reading the light novel = "Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss But I'm Not the Demon Lord"

The canon story itself was very satisfactory, but I want to get into the habit of fanfic writing again. So this is going to be a spoiler-full thread of random thoughts from the books and some ideas that I have floating in my head. The objective is that, well, if something pops up that I like, I might actually write another fanfic story.

Again - these are random thoughts or ideas floating in my head. No promises or commitments that an actual fanfic will emerge.

With that preamble out of the way - let's begin.

Hmm... what do I like about the canon plot? I like the fact that the canon shipping actually sails. Sure, there is a comical element to how Yumiella and Patrick interact - especially with how Yumiella is shy about admitting things - but she does not actively deny her feelings like an over-the-top Tsundere. I find that very refreshing. Speaking of which, Patrick's patience is amazing. There are so, so many BURNS that Yumiella does to him (un-intentionally), but he still sticks with her.

Not sure if I want to attempt repeating all that. And I don't think I want to write Yumiella as a Tsundere either. What other options are there?

Canonically, he falls head-over-heels for her. I think he verbally admits this to another individual in volume 3, but the fact that he goes out of his way to level up in volume 1, shows that he's aware of his own feelings. As for Yumiella herself, I think she slowly realises in volume 1 that she likes him, but most definitely cements that in volume 2 when she proposes visiting his parents to get them engaged.

Hmm... why not have her chase him down? It might be an interesting twist on things - but I don't think it would work with her single-minded canon character. So that would need to change. Speaking of which, for an isekai'd individual - she's odd. The novel uses the excuse that she's a gamer to explain why she's so hell-bend on leveling up and as someone who plays games, I do understand that - but as a goal in and of itself? Like, sure there are folk who do that ... but ... no. I don't want to go down that route. Which means we'll need to change her character too.

Her being obsessed with leveling up is a central point to her personality - so I'll keep that around, but another goal she had was to try and be inconspicuous. As in - to not be noticed by those around her. Why not give her enough emotional intelligence to actually accomplish that? Which might mean in the initial scene the level-measuring device would NOT announce her to be at level 99.

If we go down that route, a lot of the interactions Yumiella had with the original cast goes out the window. Canonically, the *only* reason most folk paid her any attention was because they knew her to be an over-powered monster. If she hid that, the "original" plot of the otome game should proceed - with the usual heroine teaming up to defeat the Demon Lord.

Hmm... that might be a fun story to write - what might such a story look like? At least, from Yumiella's and Patrick's point-of-view?

Actually - would Patrick even be a part of that story? He *is* shown to be a prodigy by being the only student to reach double digit (level 10) in the initial level-measuring event, but the fact that he's not considered to be part of the Demon Lord subjugation team means, at best, he's some kind of side character.

Why not make him as another isekai'd character? That might be a fun hook. In the canon story, the reason why (or how?) Yumiella gets brought into the world is explored in volume 3. Basically - an other-worldly entity got bored and wanted to change things. Might keep that the same. But for Patrick? Hmm... why not have him be brought in to just help fight against the Demon Lord? It would give him an excuse to level up and stuff.

I think I like that idea. i.e. due to some event, someone in our world dies, meets a divine entity, complains about how he never got to live a fulfilling life and gets send to this world instead. Kind of like Konosuba, but instead of flubbing things like Kazuma did, it's played straight. Then, we can follow the story of Patrick building himself up to solo the Demon Lord in secret, but Yumiella notices and starts observing him. He finds her suspicious (could be fun if he had knowledge of the "original" game and sees her as an optional "evil" boss).

That might be fun, actually. i.e. from Patrick's point-of-view, the world is some kind of RPG where he's a side-character who tries to secretly help the original cast, but from Yumiella's point-of-view, the world is an otome game and Patrick is behaving off-script at some strange points.

I need to re-read volume 1 again. Need to summarise what the "canon" events in the "original" game where. Actually - what was it even called again? Ah - "Light Magic and the Hero". Or LMH as it's abbreviated in the light novel.

This ramble is long enough now.

Keep in mind everything I state is based on the anime, as I've not seen the light novel yet.

Let me state at the outset, she does not actually seem a tsunder to me. But perhaps I'm just missing it (or the light novel emphasis is different).

I you want to keep romance in the story... Patrick is near perfect for her, and quite frankly, the ONLY male in the series I could see her with... but I do not actually like him overly much. Part of the issue is I have to wonder if he is really hiding some of his past from her... In the anime it was all about her, and it is not clear at all exactly whom he is even though his position was stated...

He can also serve as good cover for her, from all the marriage prospects and even politics that she is being forced to deal with.

Even if he is not hiding anything, he is a point that can be used as a point of manipulation for her.

I actually would prefer no romance in this if i was reading fan fiction... which may not match your own goals...

I'm not a fan of the hook, but it could work. We already know, at least in anime, that there is more at play... either the world system itself is upset that the plot has been derailed at Yumerias actions, or alternatively, some other gamer is manipulating the protagonist... It could well be in a fan fiction that multiple gods are involved and pulled events out of canon in to further manipulate things (pulling gamer Yumeria, pulling Patrick, manipulating protagonist, etc)... that would explain things.

I agree that Yumiella is not a tsundere. And I also agree with your comment in the other thread of how she's just introverted and not used to dealing with people. That .. fits canon very well.

Apologies - but I can't help myself in this regard. It's one of the reasons I like fanfiction. Which probably makes me some kind of shipper. (True!)

As much as I enjoy reading canon, I do not feel confident in keeping Yumiella's Level 99 status. Granted - that is the whole point of her character ... but she's very close to a Mary Sue build with a communication problem and I can't imagine a story with that. Frankly, I'm just amazed that canon pulled it off!

I skimmed over volume 1 of the Light Novel, taking notes. Had some trouble in the beginning trying to figure out how the academic cycle/calendar worked in the game-world. Then I realized that it would most likely be modelled after the Japanese high school system and I found this information online,

High-school calendar,

* starts in April
* First term goes on till near end of July
* Summer vacation till early September
* Second term lasts till near end of December
* Winter vacation till early January
* Third (and final) term goes on till near end of March
* Sprint break from end of March till beginning of April
* new term starts in April

After figuring this out, the rest of the story made a lot more sense. Here is a spoiler-full summary of volume 1,

Year 1:

Term 1:
* Yumiella draws attention to herself with being level 99
* She meets the royal family, gets verified that was indeed her level and returns to the dorm.
* After her power is verified, she has to deal with a lot of suitors - but she rejects them all.
* She meets up with Eleanora who, unlike the others came soley because she was worried about Yumiella's relationship with Prince Edwin. Once that misunderstanding is resolved, Yumiella sees her in a better light.
* Some days after this, Alicia accuses Yumiella of being the resurrected Demon Lord. The prince, kind-of backs her stupid claim.
* Yumiella tries to counter by explaining her levelling up methods ... and everyone thinks she's crazy.
* Our dark haired one spends a few days tailing Alicia (the original protagonist) thinking she might be another reincarnated individual - but comes to the conclusion that she's just a simple girl.
* As she gives up her observation, she sees Alicia play with a kitten/cat. After the protagonist leaves, Yumiella approaches the cat ... who runs away in fear. Patrick sees this and comments on it. Yumiella does not even remember his name at this point, but she makes a note of him.
* A little later, Yumiella is called to the headmaster to guide some of the students in combat training (she learns that there is a plan to get the prince to at least level 40 in 2 years). She meets up with Patrick, gains some respect for his tactical know-how and "guides" the lesson - by using a monster summoning flute.
* She and Patrick talk about issues due to their hair colour.

Summer vacation
* An interlude happens and we see Jessica Montford - the noble who would have originally befriended Alicia. Jessica reveals that the crazy combat exercises actually helped her and that she has a dragon problem - which the capital is ignoring because it is not causing harm to civilians yet.

Term 2:
* A battle arts competition is announced. On seeing the grand prize, Yumiella joins and eventually wins. It's a bit ... interesting to see Patrick watching her fights from a far distance.
* Eventually, the weather turns cold and there is an incident of someone stealing Alicia's stuff. The prince initially suspects Yumiella, but she denies it. On following the protagonist, our heroine discovers who the culprit is - a member of Eleanora's entourage. She kind-of forgives the incident and gains favour with Eleanora. On narrating the incident to Patrick, he finds the whole thing interesting.
* The end-of-year party comes round. On receiving a gift, as in, a dress from the Queen, Yumiella is forced to attend - even though she did not want to. She has a dance with Patrick (she thinks he has another girlfriend), after which, when someone else asks for her company, she denies it with her usual "someone stronger than me" excuse. Patrick begins to realize that he has feelings for her and decides to level up agressively.

Winter vacation
* Winter break comes and goes. The first academic year ends.

Term 3:
Spring break
* For spring break, Jessica invites Yumiella over to help with her dragon problem and she accepts. (Patrick too invited her to join him, but she declined him).
* This is when she gets her dragon egg.

Second year:
Term 1:
* As the new year starts, Yumiella gains the reputation of 'dangerous person with the egg'.
* There is some fun around how she hatches the egg.
* A little later, she goes on her first flying lesson. She falls - Patrick picks her up and runs around in a panic. It is talked about by the student body for a long time.
* When Yumiella visits the town on a shopping trip, she gets intercepted by a foreign agent. During that exchange is when she realises her feelings for Patrick.
* We get a scene about 2nd year mid-term exams. Yumiella, Patrick, Edwin and Oswald are all at the top of their grade. Yumiella and Patrick talk about make up exams and how they are kept secret.
* Eventually, Eleanora approaches Yumiella to ask for study help. It works out so well that they become buddies.
* Yumiella notices that Patrick is spending a lot of time away from the academy. He was levelling up - but did not tell her. He also spent time trying to convince Prince Edwin of how Yumiella is not a bad person.
* A little while later, the Prince summons Yumiella and apologizes to her.
* The principle is not happy with how the Prince (and his friends) are growing - so he asks Yumiella to train them. She takes them to a dungeon and Alicia experiences shock therapy.

Spring break:
* Yumiella again declines Patrick's invitation to visit his home and goes dungeon diving for a better sword. This becomes a comical situation where the price of boss gems plummets because of how fast she is farming the dungeon.

Year 3:
Term 1:
* When she meets her friends, she gifts Patrick and Eleanora daggers from the dungeon.
* A few weeks later - assassination attempts begin on Yumiella. She beats them off, but this eventually triggers the king to reveal that the Demon Lord is resurrecting.
* Yumiella's parents try to kill her, but she ends up usurping her father's title. the king approves - but they decide that she should complete her education first, and leave the country in the hands of the current care-taker.
* There is some kind of party after the announcement involving the Demon Lord. It is at the end of this party that Patrick and Yumiella admit their feelings for each other.
* The fight against the Demon Lord's armies begins. Patrick had asked Yumiella to allow him to accompany her, but she declined - saying that his tactics would be better served against the larger army.
* Yumiella, Alicia, Prince Edwin, William and Oswald fly over to the Demon Lord's castle. They storm in and Alicia back-stabs Yumiella. She had an amulet of protection and survives. The Demon Lord joins the standoff and after some back and forth, Yumiella kills the Demon Lord (it is her first every "human" kill).
* The backstabbers are taken into custody after the battle got over. It is publicly announced that Prince Edwin, with Yumiella's help took down the Demon Lord.

Volume 1 ends with Yumiella and Patrick making plans on what to do after graduating.

This is giving me a few ideas. At the moment, I'm thinking of having Patrick also be another isekai'd individual. And as for Yumiella - perhaps I could lean into her gamer character? As in, she is THE otome game player! (similar to Keima from "World only God Knows"). Though, instead of her chasing anyone, at the academy, she gains the reputation of helping others with their romantic pursuits.

One unfortunate thing I just realised after writing all that up, is that we (as the reader) have very little information about the game world of "Light Magic and the Hero". Which means I have a lot of leeway to make things up!

Will rest for now and see if any new ideas form in the meantime.

I have no issue believing her to be level 99. In the anime she was very forthcoming in telling anyone whom asked exactly what she did to get as powerful as she did, and everyone was horrified and thought she was instead listing ways for them to die. Which is to their loss, since it obviously works.

I loved the episode with the demon summoning whistle.

The interesting thing is we actually do not know her level to be level 99 at all... that is a misconception everyone in the story has, because their measuring system tops out at 99 and is only two digits long. And their strongest knight is around 70. She could easily be instead say 110, or 150, or 199, or more....

By making her so incredibly overpowered, they made the series focus on story and plot, rather than fighting, because any fight she is involved with outside of training except against the end game boss, is instntly over.

I watched a few snippets from the anime - looks like they are doing something slightly different than the novel. At least, the parts about Alicia not having control over her actions is new. In the Light Novel, she has some kind of pre-deposition against dark magic and by extension, Yumiella.

About her "level cap" - from the Light Novel,

The world does have a level cap of 99. While an individual can accumulate experience beyond that, their level is hard-capped to 99 at most.

Near the end of volume 3, Yumiella gains the ability to break the level cap.

And I flipped over the first few pages of volume 4 - the level measuring device suddenly starts showing her level to be 13. Which is ludicrous. An ... entity is dragged in to explain the situation and we get the answer that the display on the level measuring device is locked to the last two digits.
