An idea that's been picking away at my brain cells for some time is, 'What if it was all a dream?"
Or more correctly, a delusion...
It would be set in an asylum, and Shinji is the comatose/fugue state patient. The other characters are there as well. Dr. Akagi is a doctor, Kaji an orderly, Misato a nurse, etc, etc.
Shinji exists in two worlds, the reality, in which he literally just lays there, and his delusion, the world of EVA that we all know.
Something traumatic in his real life, divorce, death of his mother, assault, or whatever, caused him to retreat from reality into fantasy.
I've thought about this for some time, but I've resigned myself to ever putting pen to paper on this one, so I'm putting it into the public domain.
