When do YOU click (Rate) button?

So we've got this fancy-shmancy Reputation metric. Let's talk about it!

Specifically, when do YOU click the (Rate) button to give someone +1 or -1? What drives that decision?

My thinking in starting this thread:
1) We want to use this as a tool to encourage good behavior / discourage bad behavior by linking the Reputation mechanic to what their reputation actually is among the rest of the board. Rather than saying people should chase REP, I want it to be a "guide to how much salt new posters should take their words with".

2) In order to do that I think we should have a coherent approach to what makes other people click the (Rate) button; rather than actual rules, just an awareness of what other people value.

3) All the other forums I've used with Rep systems are software user forums for like EXCEL or Autocad or stuff, so there you get reps for answering question threads. That's not really applicable here, so I personally don't really actually know how I want to hand out rep points.

So yeah!
Tell me what you think the (Rate) button should be about!

"Man, that's an awesome post. Imma +1 that dude."

That's pretty much my only qualification for rating someone. I doubt I'm ever gonna -1 since it's feels rather petty and pathetic.

Edit: Well I say that but thinking on it, I've only rated someone once and it was for a series of useful posts rather than just once. I may be more picky than I thought.

Oh shit, completely forgot that we had that. I MEANT to announce a vote as to whether we would keep the rating system, then did not.

Sooo... do people want to keep the reputation system? I found the controls for it and can kill it if that's of interest.

Speaking as the person with the most rep- don't give a fuck.

It's fun until people start being asstards about it. And, given that this is TFF...

I rather it be dead and buried...

I'd like to see it go. I can't imagine anything good ever coming of it, though it's not exactly guaranteed to be a problem, either.

While I still hold a slimmer of hope to revive a 'thanks' button (probably in another year or so), I find the current 'Reputation' system to be too cumbersome to use.

I have 3 points, they are all from posts on the same thread, and I'm not sure if I got them because people actually agreed with me or because I was giving Ero a hard time.

Never use the system myself. Don't see the point to having it, but right now it seems pretty innocuous. If it goes away, I wouldn't miss it, and so long as there are no consequences/rewards that arise from rep score, it wouldn't bother me if it stuck around.

I usually click if someone makes me laugh, or has a post I REALLY agree with.

Basically, it has to be good enough to make me remember we have a rating system.

I have rated one poster down, once. I have never rated anyone up. I doubt I ever will.
