World's End Economica

Made by the same guy who wrote Spice & Wolf, this Visual Novel's first Volume is up on Steam.

My god. My heart after playing this game. This is coming from a man who has watched & played multiple Urobochi works.

Although I am recommending this game, it is emotionally traumatizing. Definitely not for everyone.

Vol2 & Vol3 English Releases are tenatively scheduled for May 2015.

What's it about? I've not enjoyed the few visual novels I've read/played, how would you sell me this one?

VNs are in ways, non-interactive and linear, which is why many people dislike them. Just like RTS/FPS/Etc, VNs are not for everyone. If you enjoy reading books, you might like Visual Novels.

The story is about a kid who is attempting to enact his dream - to explore Mars - through rapid accumulation of wealth utilizing the stock market. At age 16 he ran away from home, earned 1,000 mools (appears to have 1/1 exchange rate with USD) working, then multiplied it to 72,000 mools through margin trading.

While starting off slow, the story moves towards a powerful, deeply moving (and terrible) conclusion. I don't want to spoil more, so I'll end by saying World's End Economica (in Volume 1, at least) is the definition of the Linear VN archtype, unlike Fate/Stay Night you don't even get to make choices.

For those who want some action in their VN, Sunrider (a free game, and on Steam) plays very much like Fire Emblem with a dash of Mass Effect style morality choices.

This topic made me pick the game up which I got off a sale some time ago and play through it. What an ending. Too bad episode 2 won't come out until like May next year?

Read that in a monotone voice.

Now stare at your avatar.

Hmm.

But yeah, to fill the time until the next volumes get translated, consider playing Sunrider as well - and it's free to boot. I actually replayed it twice.
