I believe that more good fics are ruined by talented writers who are trying to apppeal to a target audience than any other cause. So prove me right. My challenge to every TFFer and all fanfiction writers anywhere, ever: write a fic with ABSOLUTELY no romantic pairings, in any way, shape or form. Any fandom, any continuity, just ditch the romance.
You can mention romance in the fic only if your central characters are married, and even then only if their marriage explicitly happens in the original source. And even then, stay away from any sort of romantic falling out on their part.
Talk about the pains of growing too old for your hometown, or losing a friend, or getting older, or talk about the simple pleasures in life, about the old soldier thinking back on his war years, the space pirate day dreaming about his glorious future...
You get the point. Now write a story that gets it.
