Hope no one bashes me for this topic.

Well, I wanted to start a topic to see what everyone wanted to have continued. I mean, I have my share of fics that I thought were the world, but were abandoned, gone on long hiatus, or simply forgotten.

I'm sure ya'll know what I mean. Those absolutely brilliant fics that you checked up one for updates everyday, but suddenly, one day, those updates suddenly stopped....and never continued, as a small piece of yourself died inside.


Maybe the author is lurking around this board, and may take pity on you and answer? One can only hope.

I'll start off with a fic who's author is still around, but has since moved on to other fics.

I'm not sure I'm allowed to post that many links. Would you need them by story, or by link, which is not remotely the same. If by link, that is some 1046.

EDIT: Oh... just for noting how I class something dead, my own personal standard is 1 year without an update to the story, or if an author and not a story, then 1 year without updating any story in any series I track.

I do not track Naruto, Harry Potter, Negima, and several other popular ones because I do not like them.

I can think of a few here and there but the one that I have been making virgin sacrifices to is Foxhound by Kraken's Ghost. Every day I lose a little more hope.

Foxhound's been shelved due to plotholeness, apparently. He's doing the Deus Ex Machina thing right now, though, so it all turned out ... if not for the best, then at least decently well.

Yeah I know, but damn it all I love foxhound it was the first Naruto fanfic I ever read.

As PCHeintz72 said above, that's a little too many link in one post.So I'll just give a few.

Timed vacation by ukie1. A Ranma/Sailor Moon crossover with a Ranma/Setsuna pairing. No martial arts, no fuku, no daemon. It's a pure drama , and it rocks

Not a dirty word by Michael fetter. A Self-insert of sort. After one too many bad fics, Jesus Christ is so pissed at the author that he send him in his own personal hell, the body of Kasumi Tendou.

Out of the frying pan by Alathon. Mallher save Ranma from seppuku and take him out of the Tendo house. Only two chapter long, but the writing was top-notch.

Here's two fics I'd love to see come back to life.

Behind a Mask (Naruto) by refused. One of, if not, the best Naruto/Tenten fic ever. Hasn't been updated since '04, though. Damn shame.

My Soldier, My Savior (Gundam SEED) by WDCain. Unique and interesting plot with superb writing. It's only two chapters but they're both awesome from start to finish.

A couple fall just short of a year, but as a general rule, they should all have been a year or more since last updated. The authors may in fact be quite active, but not on the stories above, having moved on to either other stories, or other fandoms.

Well, here are *some* highlights, only around 165. Many of these are deader than a doornail, they are defiantely not coming back. Some might, as the authors simply have slower turnaround times due to RL.

Wow...Someone has kept quite the list. I never bothered to record mine down, I would, after the title had noticeably been abandoned, just stumble over them periodically and reminisce. Many of them are actually on your list.

How odd, I've not received that complaint before. Normally each story starts on a new line flush on the left margin, and each link listed below it is indented with a dash and a space, followed by link type. My system currently allows for 1 direct and 3 author links. most people I've asked find it easy enough. And no complaints on normal lack of spacing between entries.

Perhaps it would have been better if I posted the HTML varient, but then, I prefer seeing the actual links. Only issue with that is the tags I have autogenerated for collapsable tree style catagory sections and combobox menu.

I could have in two different ways, but did not for a couple reasons.

I wrote some time back a custom program (not a simple macro) that basically datamines my IE favorites and my downloaded fan fiction directories. it the processes all the data and can produce customized reports simultaneously in CSV, HTML, OPML, XML, TXT and one other format I use for a type of error control. It can give either basic reports just on favorites, or creating a linked list between the stories and the favorites. What is used above is the TXT output format.

The second type is what is used here. I can customize the list in some ways, as filtering is allowed, but needs to be set up in customized INI files. For example, I could and have filters already set up to give me only Ranma related info in a report, rather than all fan fiction. I could in theory run it on anything, for example, i use it to catalog my music and picture collections.

To run it only takes a few seconds if it is just on the favorites, but up to a couple minutes if it is a linked list on the downloaded stories.

It is *not* a search engine. But one can go through the generated files to learn all types of statistics. Like what stories have no links, how many are complete, how many by an author. etc... With the CSV format, I could in theory write a DB front end for it, but have never bothered. Ditto for Firefox bookmark support, as I think Firefox stinks.

To my knowledge, there is no specifc product ever made to to this type of reporting fuction. There are on line products, but require you to upload your links to the site and it is converted to their format. Such sites have a number of big issues I'm aware of as me and another attempted to use one with my links as the test data.

I actually recognized a lot of the stories on that list. Must agree that some of them do need an update.

Personally, I think Krista Perry has written herself into a corner with 'Fire and Ice' that I'm still hoping she can write herself out of.

I really liked Sinom Bre/DF Roeder's work and have some good news. He just (as of 21 Feb 2007) reposted a new fic on FFN: (HP) Transitions.
There may still be hope for 'Chrysalides', 'Fame', 'The Prank That Wasn't', 'The Accidental Goddess"...

Ozzallos, Innortal and Ringmaster are members of this board and the last 2 post regularly. Maybe we should bug them for updates; just as long as they don't pull a Hawk or a Raa on us...

Turbanator updated Book 3 last May so there may still be hope.

Sadly, this will not be true for Celeste Byrd.

I prefer practicality and information provided to aesthetics, ideally without taking massive screenspace per entry, which I consider 1 line + 1 per link minimum for text if displaying the actual link. It works for me, and I was the one that it was designed for. I have made changes since it was made (Sept 2004) based on advice of some, but only as long as it did not affect my own needs.

As for the last. That is more subject to author's whim and not really something that can be trackable by a program like mine. Even if they *state* it is or is not dead, there is nothing to say they cannot change their mind later.

That is why I subscribe to a one year dead policy for stories, and a one year dead policy on series *I* am interested in for authors. If they cannot post in that timeframe, reasons aside, I consider them dead until they do, even if they posted yesterday a story.

Personally, I dislike bold, italics, underline, etc... in either posts or fan fiction. Prefer straight untagged text.

While I would not change my TXT output version of the list, I could I suppose chagne the HTML version. I did not design that version for me, and the display is different, but I suppose I could keep it in mind.

Can INVISION even handle straight html in posts, I never checked, lets see:

Actually, I had debated including a couple of yours, but they were among the 80%+ I skimmed back on. That includes 'A Cold Dish', 'Half Metal Panic', 'Unexpected Effect', and 'Wild Kaitou'.

While sad to hear about your leaving writing, at least it would appear to be temporary. Good luck in RL.
