All ThatÆs Old Is New Again

He didnt manage to get far before Tsunades struggling nearly made him drop her.
Even though he knew she was upset, for a moment Naruto wanted to scold hershe had every right to yell at him and Sasuke and probably deserved to punch each of them at least once, but she should at least wait to do so until hed gotten her to safety, rather that endanger the mission.
And then he swallowed the words.
He wasnt carrying Sakura. He wasnt carrying Hinata or Ino or Tenten.
He was carrying Tsunade. Not the one he knew so well, but one he barely knew at all. She was young and scared and not even really a true ninja, yetshe was a girl who had just been abandoned by the two people she was supposed to be able to rely on.
He couldntand shouldntexpect her to act like one of friends in the future. He couldnt expect her to act like a ninja more than twice her age that was a rank or two high than her with a hundred times the missions.
If he wanted to ever make things right, he had to treat Tsunade as her own personnot as a teammate that didnt exist anymore or as a faceless member of the team.
More than that, this wasnt even a real mission. This was something theyd dragged Tsunade into for the sake of their own improvement and forced her to keep up despite not having years of training like they did.
And in the end, this mission wasnt even important, was it? They didnt want to be Genin anymore, but truthfully, none of the things they were really trying to prevent would happen for decades. Having a head start wouldnt hurtit never didbut when they had this much time, there was no excuse for endangering a teammate by hurrying.
If his younger, future self had seen how hed screwed up today, he would have punched him in the face.
So he stopped. He set Tsunade down on her feet on top of a building and took two steps back. She whirled towards him immediately, fire in her eyes.
You left me! She shrieked. You bastard; you left me behind! I thought me were supposed to be a team!?
Her voice would draw more people, but at this point, Naruto didnt care. If they came, theyd have to deal with them; it was as simple as that.
Your right, He said. I did. I screwed up and I have no excuse, but Im sorry.
Why? Why are you two always doing this? Tsunade demanded, continuing when Narutos brow furrowed. Dont act like you dont know what I mean! Every day, you and Orochimaru vanish off together and every time, you come back stronger. If youre training, why not bring me? Is it because Im a girl? Is it because you think Im weak!?
Hints of tears were gathering in her eyes.
No, Naruto said. Itsits not that. I cant really explain, but Orochimaru and I decided we had to get stronger and we didnt think of anyone else. Were assholes and it was wrong for us to exclude you. It wont happen again, I promise. But Tsunadewere in danger if we stay hereand Orochimarus in danger if we leave him alone. We have to get back to him, now.
But his words just made Tsunade angrier.
Who cares!? This is just a stupid Examwe can take it as many times as we want!
Naruto nodded.
Do you want us to drop out, then? We can do it, if you want. All we have to do is get back to Orochimaru and make him do pushups or something. If thats want you want, lets gobecause youre right. We can take this Exam as many times as me want; it doesnt matter if we win or lose. If you want to, will drop outso do you want to?
No. She said, not sounding any less angry, but seeming resolved.
Naruto had figured as much. Hed meant what hed said, but even while she was upset with them, Tsunade had come here to take the test just like they had. Maybe she didnt want to lose. Maybe she didnt want to disappoint her family or sensei. Maybe she had a goal or dream like they did.
Naruto was kind of ashamed that he didnt know which was true, but he knew Tsunade, if only in the future, and she wouldnt back down from something like this.
He pointed at the house hed hidden Sasuke in, which was just barely in sight.
Go get Orochimaru and win this. Ill stay here. He said.
What? Tsunade blinked. Why?
Our little talk probably drew some unwanted attention. Someone has to keep away anyone who shows upand youve been left behind too many times.
