Anime and Manga Recommendations

Here's the deal. As it stands right now, I'm out of anime to watch and manga to read. I've finished Death Note (lol @ Light), finished Love Hina, and am completely caught up with all the ongoing series I'm interested in.

To fix this, I've decided to branch out and find some new series to read and watch, and I was hoping I could get some recommendations (as opposed to just picking things randomly off of a scanlation sites list and hoping it doesn't suck).

I enjoy series with action, and I don't particularly care about the level of blood and/or gore. IÆll watch Samurai Jack, Hellsing, and everything in between. It doesnÆt really matter to me. Adventure stories are also a plus, because hey, who doesn't like reading a good epic?

Romance is another genre I enjoy reading about, though for it to be a 'pure' romance (no giant robots, no magic girls, no saving the world, no Ultimate EvilTM to destroy, ect, ect. Basically nothing more than a work of fiction, as opposed to science fiction or fantasy), it would have to be really good for me to consider reading it. I liek mah shinies, after all.

Harem romances are always amusing, even if it isn't a harem in the end (because I can't really think of any harem anime or manga that actually ended in a harem)*.

And for the record, I consider any story with at least two (preferably three) potential and/or active love interests to be in the "harem" category. That means I'd consider a manga like Bleach to be a harem series after a fashion, as there are at least two women (possibly three) who are romantically interested in Ichigo. I know that's not the 'standard' definition of a harem story (which tends to have a Four Love Interests Minimum), but since there really aren't that many harem series to begin with, I'm willing to lower my standards a bit.

Comedy series are always a plus, and I'm not at all adverse to crack series. Those are my favorites, actually.

In short, I'll read and watch just about anything from any genre as long as it's good, though romances (especially harem romances (for teh Dramas)), action/adventures (a la shonen), and comedies are always my favorites.

And of course, thanks in advance.

* On that note, if you actually know of a series that has a confirmed, implied, or heavily suggested harem pairing, then I'm definitely interested.

Try Shin Angyo Onshi. It has beauty artwork with a powerful story that keep you glue to it and it written by a Korean.

Shin Angyo Onshi :Jushin, which is modelled after feudal Korea. In Jushin, there once lived secret government agents called angyo onshi, who traveled the countryside in disguise. They were charged by the king to find and punish corrupt government officials, and bring justice to the country's citizens. Jushin has been destroyed, fractured into numerous fiefdoms and kingdoms, many of which are ruled by corrupt and tyrannical warlords. Shin Angyo Onshi follows the adventures of one of the remaining angyo onshi, Munsu, as he continues to wander the countryside and deals with the chaos caused by Jushin's fall.

You might want to give Tenjou Tenge a try...just forget about the anime and go straight for the manga which goes far beyond the anime and is wayyy better in every possible way.

You can find it on onemanga

Nanoha StrikerS has a bit of an implied lesbian threesome; there's a scene where Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate are all getting out of bed in the morning wearing their underwear. It's a bit debatable as to whether it's a lesbian threesome or just a lesbian couple with a 'freind', though.

Nanoha and Fate are definately a lesbian couple, though; the show does everything but outright stating it. Hell, the two of them adopt a child together, and when she says she has two moms, Fate says nothing to the contrary. That's not something a pair of freinds do.

There's also the more ambiguous relationship between Suzaku and Teana; it's debatable as to whether they're freinds or something more.

In any case, it's worth checking out simply due to how awesome it is, the plethora of lesbians and ambiguous lesbians aside.

Confirmed Harem? Tenchi Muyo and Happy lesson come to mind. Also the only ending that makes sense in Bastard!!

Manga recommandatios.

Samurai epic:
-Vagabond
-Blade of the immortal
-Lone wolf and Cub

Cyberpunk:
-Ghost in the shell
-Venus Wars
-Eden: it's an endless world( the manga most close to my heart  )
-Gunnm
-Red eyes

Heroic fantasy:
-Ubell Blatt
-Basara
Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken
-Orion

- Action/Comedy
Sunabouzu (anime)

Tried to avoid the blindingly obvious like Berserk, One Piece or Bastard!! and while I could keep up for a while it seems a little too hit or miss since we don't know what you've read.

I suggest any season of Slayers, the OVAs and movies. They're all good. Enough action, comedy and adventure (plus fire and explosions, can't go wrong with those!) to really get things going.

Baki the Grappler is an awesome action series. Almost pure fighting. Though the story does have a decent plot to it, so it's not bad.

Elfin Lied has lots of blood and guts. (First ten minutes were of Lucy walking down the hallway, naked, and killing everyone in sight.)

The Fatal Fury OVAs are good too.

As far as Slayers, I say only watch the first two seasons. Slayers Try is just filler, and pretty bad filler at that.

One of the series I'm watching now that I recommend is Crest of the Stars. Its pretty old, but classic. And very good.

I liked Slayers Try... but agree not as good as the rest.

Crest of the Stars/Banner of the Stars is not as old as Slayers. But I highly liked the saga myself. In fact... Admiral Spoor is one of my all time favorite anime female high ranking military person. You have to love someone who in the middle of battle is proclaiming how bored she is, or how she went out of her way to invite her aide to the opening of her new crypt in I think it was 12 or 13 years...

Note... make sure you aquire the prequel to Crest of the Stars (Lost Chapter of the Stars), and the sequel to Banner of the Stars II (Banner of the Stars III).

Raine, do you have a list of anime/manga that you've already seen/read? This way, we don't suggest any material you already went through.

I recommend Katekyo Hitman Reborn, if you haven't read it already. A tad of a warning though, it takes about 50-60 chapters of One Shot humor (Like a sitcom basically), before we really get into The Plot. Yes, the capitalization is necessary. It is awesome. Fight scenes the likes of which make me weep with joy, Plot Twists that curl my brain all the way around, and Fire... lots and lots of fire... Tis a beautiful thing... :blue:

Basically the whole thing happens to be about a boy who's been selected to be the new boss of the Italian Mafia. Only he's a complete loser, so humor ensues.

And one of the villains, Mukuro, is epic win. To the Nth degree. Simply awesome.

If you've read it already, my appologies, but if you've started and stopped somewhere before that chapter 60 point, I highly recommend continuing.

Awesome favorites:
Baccano, probably the best anime i've watched.
Kurenai, Something about the art style and the character interactions make this incredible.
Soul Eater, 100000000% better than that Naruto shit

Awesome Comedy:
The Gargoyle of the Yoshinagas, hilarious and dramatic at times. One of my favorites.
The Tower of Druaga, It's actually a comedy/drama and it does it well. The first ep is the lol.
Kyouran Kazoku Nikki, supriseingly and refreshingly hilarious.

Seconded. I haven't Read/Seen the others, but Soul Eater alone is epic win. All it needs is more Blair in human form messing around with Soul, and it could possibly trump Katekyo Hitman Reborn and possibly even catch up to Fairy Tail in my favorites. And those are mainly up there that high because of excessive amounts of Fire and Dragons (in the case of Fairy Tail). And in all honesty Fairy Tail is only a couple of points below Negima, my current top favorite. Soul Eater, both Manga and Anime, is epic win.

As for Kurenai... I love the Manga, and the Anime is awesome, but both are really different to the point where I'm a tad confused, which in all honesty is the only thing that brings it down for me. Otherwise it would be right up there with Soul Eater (Excessive Harem implications FTW). I'll have to wait more to comment on this, as the manga is only 5 chapters along as far as I could find. I only watched up to around episode 5 of the anime. The bone thing out of his elbow was pretty cool though. I must see MOAR.

Also you might be interested in Double Arts. Also appears to have harem implications (Though nothing is really official yet, and I'm a tad jumpy in that regard given the amount I see in Negima and Kurenai), and the abilities of the charaters is very interesting, particularly this "Flare" ability which I may plan to rip off later for someone a tad special. A very intriguing manga.

Aw, NGD likes KHR?

You're welcome for the rec, by the way. B)

Double Arts is cool, I like the main leads.

Have you read Mx0? That is an awesome series, killed before it's time because fanbois (spelling intentional) in .jp were like "Naruto! WHEEEEEEEEEE!!!" and didn't appreciate it.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is awesome. The third arc defines perfectly what I like in manga/anime, and the characters are pretty cool themselves. Seriously; the main leads are the original GARs-- no scratch that. Archer is GFJ-> Gay for JoJo.

WRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!! is a line I have come to fear. :sisi:

Kurohime is a good manga, and even if it relies on the same scenario over and over again it has some pretty good character interactions.

Well, most of the good ones are mentioned; but I'll add a couple more...

R.O.D. and R.O.D. the TV are both great action and spy genre series.

Hayate no Gotoku is a good comedy.

Both Jubei-chan: The Ninja Girl and J2: The Counter Attack of the Siberian Yagyu are fun to watch with plenty of action.

Gunslinger Girl is well...damn; it's really good but also sad if you pay attention to the plot.

Oh; if you are looking for a Harem style anime, you can go wrong with Saber Marionette J.*

Edit: Saber Marionette J does, technicality, end in a Harem...sorta...

Well most of the ones I would recommand had already been mention, but I like to add two mangas:

Fairytail (I think that what it's english name is, not sure though. The same author as Rave)

The Records of Lost Vampire (Have a ending I both hate and love. Hate it because it seems to me the main character got the really short end of the stick, but luv it because the creator didn't pull a deus out of nowhere like so many others recently and that it make sense.)

Somehow, I think people will probably think I'm crazy for recommending it, but oh well.

The Pokemon Special/Adventures manga. Yes, I said it. The manga tends to follow the games closely in terms of mechanics and all, but it also goes much deeper in terms of story in certain aspects of the series. The series is honestly worth a shot.

If you want a really good romance anime, I recommend you to Kare Kano.

Its somewhat older and has a lot of comedic moments in it, and the animation isn't the best but there is no overreaching plot to satisfy or tale to tell.

I liked it very much.

I finished Spice and Wolf this week, Raine, and found it to be a very amusing, very cute little anime. A story about a travelling merchant who runs across a jailbait wolf spirit, who makes him an offer he can't refuse.

It amused me most of all that the lead male shares a voice with Lelouch, and the super-moe wolf girl is voiced by Karen Stadtfeld. I LOL'd hard.

As far as bloody, gory action goes? Check out Bio-Booster Armor Guyver. 20+ volumes of manga, a 12-episode series from the early 90's and a 2005 reimagining that was one of the best anime that year.

The manga was much better. The anime cut out too much.

All shoujo but still very good.

-Ouran High School Host Club
-Hot Gimmick
-Fruits Basket
-Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden (Way superior to the original fushigi Yugi.)

If that one is the one I'm thinking of, it also has a flying Snorlax. Well... sort of. It's more falling with style than anything else... silly Snorlax... :snigger:
