Well, I think the title tells you everything you need to know, doesn't it? ^_^

Tell us your favourite (para-)military unit, knightly order, ninja clan, whatever..

No restrictions on whatever fandom you can come up with, just say why you chose them . nominate as many as you like..I will start..

1. Grey Knights (WH40K)

They're kickass, they are demonhunters, they got their genes straight from the immortal emperor of mankind and they have nemesis force weapons. Period.

2. Asha'man

"Asha'man KILL" nuff said B)

The AIM staff.

For those who have not played Jagged Alliance I/II, the AIM - Association of International Mercenaries - is the greatest bunch of ex-criminals, loons and fairly normal people who just make their living with killing others.

After all, if six people manage to take out roughly two- to three-hundred times their worth over the course of a campaign (and I kid you not, my current assault team has everyone sporting over 250 individual kills ... the amount of enemies the game throws at you is ridiculous at times :ph43r:).... what can you say, they rock.

Plus, the individual voice-acting and personalities for each of the mercs (from "fairly nice" Scope Sterling to "bloody fucking insane" Fidel Dahan) makes esp. JA2 the greatest turn-based strategy game ever made... sharing the first place with X-Com: Enemy Unknown.

-

The Thousand Sons of Magnus.

They're either power armor inhabited by the souls of their former wearers, ridiculously indestructible or ridiculously powerful sorcerors in power armor.

And they're ten millenia old, each of 'em. They kick ass and take names... what more do you want?

For sheer overkill value: 1) Hammer's Slammers - and if you know not who they are ... shame on you.

For traditional values: 2) The Knight Sabers - '32 version. It's Chicks in Chainmail meets Cyberpunk.

For class and cold professionalism, and because they are a unit ... sort of: 3)Yu Lan and Yu Fan.

For one-person forces of mass destruction: 4) Ifurita.

For laughs: 5)ACROSS

And finally, for fanboyism of the old-school kind: 6)Eurocorp.

I have a certain fondness for Curare and the Guild of assassins from Batman Beyond, although they were all pretty much wiped out in the end.

Beyond that, I quite like SOLDIER, what little we see of it.

And of course even more so: The Turks (because it's my job)

Hm. Toughy.

In no particular order (because preference would be... unfair... ;))

SeeD (Final Fantasy VIII) - mercs with a conscience. Plus... taught by Quistis? ^_^

SOLDIER (Final Fantasy VII) - genetically enhanced soldiers. What more need be said?

MITHRIL (Full Metal Panic) - another set of mercs with a conscience.

The Sith (Star Wars) - the antithesis of the Jedi. Who, let's face it, are emotionally-retarded wimps.

Section 9 (Ghost in the Shell) - cybernetic anti-terror unit; Tachikoma's rule. ^_^

Valheru (R.E. Fiest novels) - do these count? Well, whatever - they're ultra-violent and cool.

Knights Templar (real world) - dunno why; always been interested in them.

Maaan. That's a realy tough question, actually.

SDK's Shiseiten, I suppose. Four guys who can take out entire armies without breaking a sweat, and are ridiculously powerful even by most Shonen standards. (Barring DBZ, of course.)

The Quarter Knights of Wild Arms. Lady Harken owns all, Boomerang's desire to fight corrupted a God, and Zeikfried just would not die. And when he did, he came back anyway. Alhazred....meh. He's just filling out the numbers. I'd replace him with Zed, for what it's worth. By far the more challenging boss, when he bothered to transform. Doom Bringer is a seriously cool sword, too.

FOXHOUND. Specifically the MGS incarnation, because they give Snake a run for his money. Who else can say that? ^_^

Maa....what next. I think I'm about done, actually. I'm more about individual badass than group badass.

I forgot to add the third army of choice of mine.... The Assassin's Guild of Ankh-Morpork.

Why? Because, above all things, they have style. Efficiency is not as important as looking good at whatever you are doing, even if it's failing ;)

...really, really hard to say.

Personally, I'd rather make my own army and design them as I see fit. Other forces have some bits that I don't like, so I'd rather have my 'ideal' force. I have a few different paramilitary forces, groups, or task forces that I've designed for fanfiction use, but haven't used as of yet. Personally, I like drawing back to those.

But, if I was to command a group, I know for sure the Spartan-II's from Halo would be there. Seriously - seven foot tall, genetically engineered and enhanced supersoldiers with MJOLNIR armour.

Who would NOT want a private military force comprising of those guys?

True - but I wouldn't want to be one, given the sort of shit Sam Vimes puts them through. ;) Or should that be 'in'? :snigger:

I thought I was the only one who read those books...

EDIT: Oh, yeah, my choices... I'll just pick 2, because much like Griever, Hammer's Slammers are at solid #1.

#2 spot goes to the Turks from Final Fantasy VII. You can say anything you want about them, but they were always hard battles when you fought them, and they were pretty damn competent, in spite of Rufus being a dumbass. They also had something most underlings lack: common sense. They knew when it was time to cut the losses and get the hell outta Dodge.

#3 spot goes to... Samus Aran. You don't need anyone else when you have her, they're just extras to be used mainly for fodder. And there *is* a intergalactic bounty hunter association in Metroid, IIRC.

I haven't read those books, give me names so I can!

As for my groups that have yet to be mentioned...

Treadstone (Bourne Identity movie/book): In one, a giant sting operation set up to take out a single person. In the other, an assasin agency that literally makes its agents living weapons.

Spartans (Halo): Any group who's members think throwing grenades at a nuclear reactor is a good idea deserves praise.

Confessors (Sword of Truth): I have problems with the latest books, and haven't bothered to read the last one. However, from the beginning the abilities of this group were just kickass. Its a damn shame the series has gone so far downhill.

Dunedain: What can be said about a group whose kingdom was just about utterly destroyed, and yet survived. With few numbers, they survived in the wild for nearly a millenia before Gondor and Arnor were reunited.

The Great House Telvanni from The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind.

Who wouldn't want a band of Millenia-old battlemages under their command? Besides, that Master from Sadrith Mora cracks me up. "You want to be Hortator? Are you qualified? Good. Then go right ahead, and go away."

Hmm... a good question.

For overkill? oh, the Dinochrome Brigade. what can I say, planetary siege units.

For oldschool fun? X-Com, in spit of the horrible casualty ratio, no, can't really think of any other force that comes close to them.

Rookies only cost 40.000$.... who cares about casualties.

Dai Gurren Dan.

Only, instead of being the leader, I would follow in our GAR idol into battle. Whether it's Simon or Kamina, I'd be proud to be part of that brigade.

"Only" 40k? sure it doesn't sound that much, exept at the very beginning and latter on when powered armor is standard issue.

Sides, Mr. Blaster Launcher Cares....

And don't forget the Chyssalids

A full regiment of Mark XXXV Bolos is the definition of overkill.

Hyper intelligent tanks of doom that can put themselves into orbit and are quite capable of glassing a planet.

:mmm:

Though my second choice would the Ice Bears from Mechwarrior

Ciao

I'm even more old-school.

8th Army, 7th Armoured Division ("The Desert Rats"). Either them, or the "Afrika Korps".

I think you may be refering to the Ghost Bears

My grab from that universe would be Clan Wolf-in-Exile, if only for their leader's incredible plot armour.

Phelan "You-can't-kill-me-,-haha-owned-:p" Kell-Ward is broken :p

Seriously, though, his father beats him in terms of sheer broken-ness. Phantom Mech is /seriously/ overpowered, esp. when paired with godly accuracy and whatnot.

"Only" 40k? sure it doesn't sound that much, exept at the very beginning and latter on when powered armor is standard issue.

I've been playing UFO: EU since 1997. I know that much.

"Rookie Scout Gear" = 1x Standard Plastic Armor + Laser Rifle + 1 Grenade.

And, yes, Rookies only cost 40k. The gear costs a quarter of that. If they survive five missions, tah-dah, here you go with the PA. If they survive another twenty missions, hello flying suit.

----

My latest choice of armies:

The Clone Trooper Army from Star Wars - they and 300 sparked a seriously demented Naruto fic idea in my head. That, and they kick a surprising amount of ass.

The Soviet Army of C&C Red Alert II - "I bring the Apocalypse". Forget the fancy shmancy stealth tech of the allies, forget the even fancier prism tech, and swamp them with tanks. And Terror Drones. Brrrrr.

The Bolo Divisions - Nothing says "I want you dead" like a several hundred tons heavy tank with ANTI-ORBITAL weaponry capable of tearing through pretty much anything.

Because it just popped into my head, and they deserve mention: The Mobile Infantry from Starship Troopers. The book of course. In the movie they turned them into canon fodder.

Hmm, yeah I definitely agree with Cornuthaum on the Bolo Divisions.

Space Marines for infantry, with a Maverick Hunter division for kicksà The Macross and its Veritechs for Air support. And the Turks for æPRÆ.

Although I wouldn't want to forget the GGG ^_^ .
