Uh, I don't watch Adventure Time, but I'm pretty sure the two of them are canon characters. And to play Devils Advocate, why not write a story about the two of them specifically? Might as well ask why anyone writes fanfiction/draws fanart at all.
I don't watch Adventure Time; my awareness of the show is strictly through the TTFers here, so I have no actual knowledge if there are canon male versions of Princess Bubblegum and Marcelina. If there is, then I rescind the question. If it isn't, then I clarify why would someone genderflip two characters that where of the same sex so that they are still the same sex, but of the opposite gender, when the story's focus is that of romance? Because, in my view, making a radical change to a canon character should equate a radically different type of storytelling. Case in point, genderflipping Sasuke in Naruto so that his character is now that of a girl, while everyone else stays the same. Just by virtue of making the one person Naruto is all "I will save you from your darkness, no matter what!" you have essentially changed the entire tale to the point that it should be a completely new story because we do treat boys and girls, men and women, different. Boys and girls
are different, so those things should be reflected.
However, gender flipping two characters who are the same sex, for the purpose of them having a romance with each other, strikes me as a total waste of dramatic alteration. For all intents and purposes, you could have simply made your own characters and told the story you want without having to adhere to--
Oh, wait, most of these folks don't even bother to adhere to canon. And the creator of the comic is a female which increases the likelihood of her being heavily into BL/shonen-ai by about 350%. So, whatever, I guess... :huh.:
