I don't just yet, but I want to sometime in the future.

Why?

Seems like fun.

Can I hear some opinions, or stories, or anything someone'd like to tell? My main knowledge is "Don't get glomped, it hurts."

My advice, which does not come from personal experience, is if you're not a girl, don't wear a skirt. And only if you are an atractive girl are you allowed to go without a shirt. If your an overwieght male either don't bother, or dress up as "The Man with a Paper Bag Over His Head".

I would hope that's common knowledge.

But, damn you anyway for telling any girls not to wear a skirt... Attractive ones, I mean.

The perverse Sailor Moon moments rush back to me.

I meant that in place of the skirt they should have nothing. Or at least less than a skirt.

Hmmm, don't know much about the subject, but I did learn one thing about it from watching on-demand cable...men should not cosplay as Faye Valentine...that was just creepy...

I saw a few pictures of that on Photobucket.... My poor.. poor... non-heal-able eyes.

I don't know...

I mean, I've always wanted to try to dress up as one of the traps. I could probably be a convincing one if I tried.

I'm going to "Armageddon" this year as a cos-player. Course, you wouldn't be able to tell.

Speaking of which, I have a Russian friend up at Auckland University called Vanya. He looks suprisingly feminine in a turquoise blouse and black miniskirt....

ACK! Bad thoughts! Bad thoughts!

...don't speak like that ever again Mereo...trust me, go search for "Man-Faye" and you will realize that it is a bad idea. I don't know why, but on-demand had a section dedicated to "Man Faye"...it was very disturbing.

Tell me, how much of you actually know the story behind Manfaye?

I mean, he gets so much crap by people who just see him and make judgements without thinking, but he actually is admired amongst us cosplayers. Until you've actually read up on him, don't even dare to comment on something you don't know about.

Hell-you might have just convinced me to do it now.

I know that he was thrown out of conventions and persecuted against, and was only recently allowed to enter into conventions again. I am not trying to say that he is a bad person or anything like that, he can do what he wants and I know he has more courage then me as I certainly wouldn't be able to do it. I wasn't saying anything against him as a person, I am just saying that a man dressed as Faye Valentine is a bit disturbing, so don't you go assuming to know how I think and putting words in my mouth.

You're one of the few people I meet that do know it, so I rarely expect anyone who brings up Manfaye casually to.

Still, you're right. I shouldn't put words in your mouth.

In any case, cross-dressing cosplay can still be done well. It's not always as disturbing as some people say, unless you absolutely cannot spot the traps from the faps.

Really, I've met some women who shouldn't be in that kind of costume, period. It's just as disturbing on them, if not more so because you can't tell if its a joke or not. There are also some men that would fit some female costumes better (or, say Traps like Jun costumes) than some women, though they have more trouble pulling it off.

I haven't even manged to make it to a con yet... I will eventually try to cosplay though, I think.

And one day, when I get really good at acting and can pull off a falsetto just right, I was thinking of trying to pull a convincing Tsuruko Aoyama and see how many men I can embarass  I'm 6'3" or so, so there aren't many women I could pull off convincingly... not sure how tall Tsuruko is, to tell the truth, but she gives off the impression of strength, so it might not be too much of a stretch.

As far as Man Faye goes, I've only seen pictures, but it's scary-looking. If I saw Sailor Bubba, I think I'd actually from from that one

Good traps are fine, I don't mind being laughed at for being fooled. And yeah, ugly women in skimpy outfits are just as bad as Man Faye and Sailor Bubba.

I was actually thinking of trying to do Captain Aizen of Bleach for my first con. If I can find a pattern, my grandma said she'd make me an outfit... I've got hair that looks kinda like his and the same sort of glasses. All I'd really have to do is shave and I'd have it. Maybe use some straightener on my hair...

I'm a bit sorry for if I sounded angry, I have been a bit upset with anybody questioning me after some exchanges with some idiot over at FFnet who has been questioning my intelligence. But anyways, yeah, depending on the outfit and the person, cosplay of any sort can be amusing or downright creepy, it varies from person to person.

Sig, don't apologize. It's more my fault than it is yours, after all.

Coordinating costumes is pretty important too in cosplay, for those of us in groups. It lets you have more fun when you're with your friends. Skits are certainly entertaining, and just casual roleplay can be fun too.

But, nothing owns more when you have a full team together.

Sometimes, you don't have to come as actual characters either. I've heard of a story where a giant milk carton chased around Eds from Full Metal Alchemist. I'm personally thinking of The Cabbage (Crescent Love) as a possible costume.

If all the women dressed up like this...
http://vnet.game.enet.com.cn/zhuanti/cplay/

I am not sure how common cosplay events are in my vicinity, though I know a maid cafe(or rather, a poor imitation of  ) opened a while back....

Although I will have to be knocked over by a train first before you can get me to wear funny underwear... :p

Actually, if you carry a chainsaw, you can do that and call yourself Dr Salvador...

Cosplay huh? ^_^

I did a futakoi alternative cosplay cabaret once at a con in Indonesia and played Shirogane Sarah alongside EI who played Shirogane Soujyu. For once it sort of paid off having a twin. :p

Though EI had a really hard time doing a Soujyu impression....seriously, we're both Sarahs

Though BTB as Futaba Rentaro was a bit disturbing <_<

Don't need to mention the long skirts.... -_-

We had a more or less complete group, with the twins cosplaying Rara and Ruru Hinagiku, AMM cosplaying that yakuza leader dude whose name I can't even remember now, and Apocalypse Alchemist cosplaying the...err...yeah, the squid.

The costumes were quite easy to do as the characters in the anime wore casual clothing most of the time. Rara and Ruru were a bit harder to do but the hardest one of all was....the squid...especially making one to fit Apocalypse Alchemist :p

Man...if only we had another set of twins, we could've had the Gothiloli kamens in for the ride :p We ended up doing the last scene at the church with Rara and Ruru in place of the Gothiloli Kamens, particularly cuz they were just too small to cosplay the Kamens :p

Maybe I should ask my parents for another set of twins

I wouldn't dare cosplay here in Japan though :p

Yeah...well, that's quite cool how you guys were able to pull it off, albeit a bit...creepy...

Granted, based upon how I've grown up through the ages with an emphasis on computer games and such, anything even remotely close to cosplaying scares the crap out of me. It just...does...

But, that would have been quite a sight to see. Sara and Soujyu from FA freaking own.

Eh? Creepy in what way? That a tomboy like me can actually do something like a cosplay? :p

Agreed :sisi:

No, dear Zeni-chan, it's the image of you in a skirt. Tomboys like you don't belong in skirts.

I'm not going to let this make a spin into the lemon topics, lol, so my mouth remains closed.

As I said before, I've been trying, but I lack ANY skill whatsoever at sewing, and... Well, I live in a bad place for it, not a con in sight.

Living in a desolate rural jackass state sucks ass. :sisi:

I cosplayed as Gaara about eighteen months ago at a con. It was great fun, though it was expensive to get the entire costume together. That and shaving my eyebrows was one hell of a commitment. It was all worth it though.

How exactly can a cosplay thread spin into lemon?

Anyway, cosplaying is easy, really. Try and cosplay the simple characters, such as Urashima Keitaro or the like, i.e. characters who wear ordinary clothes, preferably signature ones. For Keitaro it would be a lab coat, glasses, etc. The same applied for Sarah and Soujyu. Me and EI's hair were already the right colour, not to mention they were long, so it made things easier. As for the clothes, they were quite simple too. The only things we did have to have custom made were Ruru and Rara's vests as well as the squid costume.

Then again, I guess you'd need to be at a con to be able to cosplay. Heck, why not go to halloween cosplaying? :p I did the Jigoku shouju last halloween. :snigger:

Whoah, shaving your eyebrows?

That IS one hell of a commitment...

I applaud thee :hail: Thou art a true otaku.
