Favorite and Recommendations for RPGs

If you're computer can handle them;

Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines
Dark Messiah: Might and Magic (the AI really lets this one down...)

Everything else I was gonna suggest are already on the list. ;)

Guild Wars is pretty good. If you want to play a good looking MMORPG, but don't want a monthly fee like with World of Warcraft or Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, look no further than Guild Wars and it's two expansions (Nightfall and Factions; they can also be used independently, IIRC...)

Vampire doesn't need too good a computer. Mine can run it.

#28
Even my lower spec rigs can run it... but it's a question of running it to my satisfaction. ;) It really chokes in some places with 1GB or less of RAM, at least once you've been playing a few hours. And it's just the sort of game I get sucked in to.

I remember buying Suikoden 1 for 5 bucks at a KB-Toys Clearance bin maybe 6 years ago, great game although i dont think i ever finished it.

I managed to procure Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.

Speaking of, I should buy a new computer - preferably one that can run a little faster.

Has anyone heard anything about Call Of Cthulhu or Guild Wars?
Guild Wars is the suck.

Unless you're into heavy-duty PvP.

why would you choose the original neverwinter nights above the most recent version?
Because the only thing NWN II offers is A DIFFERENT INTERFACE.

No real story (the plot is so lame it OOZES lameness like a slug does with slime), no real innovations, no nothing.

SUCK-SUCK.
Sorry had to fix that, NWN2 uses the same engine as NWN. The only thing they did to it was fucked it up to give the appearance of a different engine or better graphics.

Dude, Super Robot Taisen should be an automatic shoo-in in any collection. It's so obvious it shouldn't even need mentioning.

But I'll admit that I should have mentioned it, just in case some godless individual out there has been denied the joy of playing it... asd.gif
Well, I'm godless. Though it doesn't just come from never playing those games. And are they really that good? My faith in anything that said 'Robot' in the title has always been low.

I know for sure they messed up how well it ran. NWN2 code = suck.

Obsidian, repeat after me: <10fps is not playable.

Metal Saga sounds cool... is it rare, or should I be able to spot a copy at a game store? Eh, if nothing else, there's always Ebay. Or the developer website, anybody got that?

I haven't chanced to play the first Grandia... what system was it for?

And yes, the Lunar games are all that is awesome about retro RPGs, containing the simplest character building, a battle system that relies on tactics more than leveling (as far as bosses go) despite its simplicity, and two of the best stories I've ever seen in an RPG. Also, in the second one you see the female lead naked. That's always a plus.

I forgot to mention Baten Kaitos as well. The cliche RPG 'Betrayal' comes most unexpectedly. The battle system was excellent too. Nothing more satisfying than nailing the final boss with a Final Straight Sunrise ending with Xelha's ultimate finishing blow. The only thing that got to me the first time around was elements nullifying each-other because I didn't plan well enough. Word of advice: Do not, I repeat, do NOT give any character attacks of opposing elements. Choose three of the six elements, each from a different set, and have that character stick to it like glue. Ignore finishing moves that don't follow your element plan, but make sure the final ones will work... for Kalas, it's wind, Xelha's is light, Ghibari's is water, Lyude's is light, Savyna's is fire, Mizuti's is chronos.

I gotta get back to Tales of Symphonia again sometime...

Also, you might try Paper Mario: Legend of the Thousand Year Door. It was really good. Beef your BP, trust me.

I disagree and point at two years worth of WoW raiding with 5-8 fps.

It's not too rare, just under appreciated due to ugly, ugly cover art. You probably could find a couple copies at a Gamestop.

The first Grandia is for PS1. I am pretty sure that it is one that you'd be a bit hard pressed to fins a hard copy of. 1 is a good game, though it is a bit cheesy at times really. That and a lot of scenes from it will remind you of 2 if you've played it, which says more about 2 having similar scenes to one since it was made later.

Pretty much everything I'd recommend has already been said. Well, other than Star Ocean 3. I enjoyed the battle system quite a bit and the game's characters as well, although there's a certain point in the plot that's a definite 'like or hate it'.

If you can find them, any and all of the Shining Force series of RPGs, Phantasy Star 4, Valkyrie Profile (Silmeria is also a nice one)...

and I know I'll get lynched for this... but I'm actually enjoying Pokemon Diamond right now...

Valkyrie Profile... I hate and love that game so much. I borrowed a copy of the original from a friend, but I had to give it back when I left college. I was to chapter 5. Now I'm going to have to go buy a PSP to finish the game. DAMN YOU SONY!

Oh, and the original Shining Force is good as well, though I understand after the second one or so it starts going downhill a bit.

Kalas is much better with Chronos. His wind attacks all tend to be relatively weaker and/or harder to get throughout the game, and you don't really get enough of the strongest wind attack cards at the end of the game.

You know, I've heard it mentioned on this board several times, but I've never played nor even seen someone play Super Robot Taisen, from GH's response to it i'm guessing it's a good game.
Yes, yes it is. Go fetch any one of them except SRW3 and 4 for SNES. Those two aren't good to start with, even though they have english patches, because they are obscenely hard.

I'd recommend starting with the GBA games. They have been officially ported, and while there's no Gundam or Mazinger in them, they are still hella good.

Well, I'm godless. Though it doesn't just come from never playing those games. And are they really that good? My faith in anything that said 'Robot' in the title has always been low.
If you ask me, they are. You can't just charge in recklessly in thoe SRPGs. If you do, you'll get wrecked. They force you to think about what you are doing, because besides the pilots' abilities, Real Robots perform differently from Super Robots.

Ike and I have had talks on threads(totally hijacking them in the process) about Pokemon.

We both play the hell out of the games.

Or at least, I used to... until I lost the power cord to my DS. :(

One of the best things about PSX games is that they are all easily found as images now.

And ePXSe is teh awesome emulator.

You can get in on eBay fairly easily.

Woah, can't believe I haven't read this thread earlier.

I can recommend all three games of the Gothic series. Though the third one tends to pale in comparison to the first two, imo. The best game of all three is Gothic 2. I liked Gothic 2 better than Morrowind. (!!!) But I've heard that the voice acting in the english version sucks, can't tell you for sure though, because I've only played the german versions. The biggest point in favor of the Gothic series is that every bit of dialogue is spoken, which does a lot for the atmosphere. Also, you can get drunk, smoke weed and visit a brothel in Gothic 2 :D

If you're looking for Diablo clones, try Dungeon Siege, it's not half bad. Divine Divinity also isn't bad, can't say anything about the sequel Beyond Divinity, yet.

All the other games I could recommend have already been mentioned.

Since I haven't seen them yet, and I'd take it as a personal affront if they weren't mentioned, I suggest:

Terranigma (SNES)
Live A Live (SNES)
Brain Lord (SNES)
Breath of Fire series, especially II and III (SNES for 1-2, PS1 for 3-4, PS2 for 5)
Secret of Mana (SNES)
Legend of Mana (PS1)
Tales of Destiny (PS1)
Final Fantasy 4,5, and 6. I don't care that much about the rest of the series. (SNES)
I rather liked Wild Arms 2 for some reason, but maybe it was just because it felt so different from most of the other RPGs I had been playing. (PS1)

To be fair, I'm not sure whether Terranigma or Brain Lord really qualify as RPGs that he's looking out for, but I loved the mechanics in Brain Lord and Terranigma, and Terranigma had an interesting plot to go with it as well.

Lastly, if you don't have time for many other games, try Progress Quest. http://www.progressquest.com/

You should all be destroyed for not mentioning these four games.

CHRONO TRIGGER

CHRONO CROSS

SAGA FRONTIER 1

SAGA FRONTIER 2

Seriously guys, bad form. :(

... Chrno Crusade is a manga, dude. I think you meant Chrono Trigger.

Also, my vote goes to: Final Fantasy Tactics.

foesjoe, you got taste, I say :D

First off, the Gothic series is awesome, IF you can get into the super annoying fight system and shoulder the very, VERY slow start. (Morrowind early on is a speed race compared to early Gothic. In Gothic, you're hard-pressed to afford a set of lockpicks and the training to use them until you're half through the game.... a big, BIG problem for a thief like me :> )
Plus, Gothic has In Extremo. My favourite band plus a kick-ass game= Awesome :)

Morrowind and, to a degree, Oblivion (as long as you get Shivering Isles. ALL HAIL SHEOGORATH) are awesome, and the epitome of free gameplay. A giant, GIANT world and you're free to fool around. No stupid "You can't go there because the story says so".

However, I can not recommend the Divinity series. Divine Divinity is rather bland, but Beyond Divinity is boring to the extreme. While the Demon Knight is pretty funny (the dialogue is so worth playing it, but that's my opinion), the game is not. It sucks, to be honest.

PC:

Baldur's Gate 1 +expansion
Baldur's Gate 2 +expansion
Icewind Dale 1 +expansion
Icewind Dale 2

Hmm, I'm beginning to see a pattern here. :3

PS2:

Of course, Final Fantasy games are always a blast to play. Kingdom Hearts, definitely. Part two less than the first though.

Hmm... what else...

Dragonquest VIII is a pretty fun game. And while definitely not too rpg'ish, you should think about getting Primal. More of an action/adventure thing, but it has a nice storyline with all kinds of crazy stuff happening to the main character.

Magna Carta: Tears of Blood

I recommend this game to anyone that can stand bishies and giant breasts and nice curves. The story isn't bad either, or it isn't at the point were I stopped playing in favor of Oni and orginal Nintendo games.

Jade Empire

Yes, its a Hack 'n Slash, its still fun. But then again, I might be the only person here that likes using quarterstaves as primary weapons.
